Title: Requesting Silver Clarification
Post by: TA on September 15, 2013, 06:07 pm
I started a thread about starting a vendor acct to sell silver plated bars. A few people said this is not allowed so I didnt open it and pm'd DPR about it. He said I can sell any silver I like as long as its not counterfeit. Does this mean the silver itself is not allowed or trying to be deceptive about what Im selling is not allowed? Then another member posts this.

SR support said the sale of counterfeit bullion is permitted as long as it is not accepted as currency. In addition, it must be advertised as fake.

Its hard to say if he was banned or not. I guess we'll see if he returns from "vacation"...

The silver that I would be selling is not accepted as currency. Seems like there is a disconnect between SR staff and I am just trying to figure out what is allowed.

I have no intention of lying to potential customers about what I would be selling. I mentioned to DPR that the silver could be used as a decoy stash in ones home to deter the theft of actual valuables and asked him to consider this and received no response. Could a mod PLEASE clear this up for me?

Best Regards

As I understand it you are proposing to sell counterfeit silver bars, bars that are not made of silver but made to look like real silver bars (silver coated).

Ultimately DPR calls the shots however I would say that this is not permitted but I have asked for an admin to post in this thread to clarify.

this is a grey aread.  up to this point, we have been strict about not allowing counterfeit currency, but all kinds of counterfeit things like bullion, apparel, even fake drugs have started to be sold on SR and we just haven't taken the time to police it or draw a well defined line for what is and isn't allowed.  At this point, you won't be stopped if you list this item, but sometime soon I will have a discussion with the community about where we want to draw the line and you might be asked to delist such items.  If that's the case, anyone selling such items will get their bond refunded even if they hadn't met the requirements.

Hope that helps clarify a little.

Silver plated bars are not illegal, they sell for silly prices on ebay. They are commonly available as trinkets or novelty items.

Why bother using Silk Road for something you can sell openly?

DPR, much thanks for your response on this topic. @ Tessellated, some of the previous sellers seem to have done pretty good sales wise in a short time. So there is a market for it why not. Ebay seems to be totally flooded with these listings and it seems like a much more viable market here. Hell someone has grilled cheese sandwiches listed! Why not...
