Title: taking the site down for discussion update
Post by: Dread Pirate Roberts on August 19, 2013, 11:18 pm
I'll be taking the site down pretty soon to roll out and test the discussion features mentioned yesterday.  If all goes well, we'll have the ability to discuss vendors, items and categories directly!

Is this in regards to the stuff mentioned in the "feedback system overhaul" thread?  I guess I'm not exactly sure what we'll be discussing.

I don't want this thread appearing in my history every time someone makes a post, so I will be deleting this post as soon as what I've written has been acknowledged.

It appears the comments are formatted in some peculiar way which makes them at the very least unable to handle the Swedish Characters "å", ä" and "ö" as they get reverted to "Ã¥", "ä", and "ö. I haven't tried any other special characters but I would suspect this might be the case with a lot of characters which are non-standard as possibly Cyrillic or Japanese Writing, might be worth checking out.

Do the comments appear on the same page as where you can post about it? I haven't seen any comments yet, just taken to the page where you can post. It that just because no one has commented yet, or do you need to post a comment first to read the other comments?

Maybe someone could post a vendor or page that already has a comment, just so we can get an idea of what it looks like.

Are your buyer stats available for everyone to see when you post?
Agreed that if would be a lot more controlled if you could only comment if you had ordered - not sure how complicated this would be to implement though.

Thanks for the link Bart.
As Gus said in your account settings you can choose an alias for these comments so people won't be able to link your buyer stats with your username.  It seems like they set it up so you can't use an alias that is already a username for someone else.

The only concern with the above is that a vendor could still link your comments based on your buyer stats. If you have bought from them, how long can they see your buyer stats, can they no longer see them once you have finalized?

DPR you should make a red sticky announcement for the front page of sr detailing the new features, new people wont think or care to click on discussion before buying otherwise in my opinion, another idea is to show some of the most recent discussion directly on the vendor page without having to click discuss

Hm trying to understand how this work and what is the practicality of it.
Clearly I missed the discussion on the forums...

Anyone care to enlighten me?

Thanks in advance

Adamiz

Edit: In the account settings the is a new option for changing my Alias. It says on the questionmark "Your alias will appear on your vendor reviews and in discussions. Use a name that is different than your main user name so your reviews and posts can not be linked to your account."

Why should I change it?

I got confused to be honest....

I don't see how any buyer could be caught if they followed advice available around here quite easily. But they still do because they don't follow advice. How many don't use PGP, I mean you can look at the orders DPR, you can tell easily how many are unencrypted!

This should be asked on the roundtable but that is a grossly marginal statistic, most of us get 20% at max.

Very nice! I just posted a comment using the new discussion system.  2 things:

1)  After placing my post I wanted to edit it but I didn't see an edit option.  Am I missing it or will it be added later?

2) I deleted the post and my message was deleted by the area with my alias and stats are still there.  Will they be there forever with (deleted) as the message or will it disappear eventually?

1) right now you can just delete and then post again

2) we won't keep posts forever, waiting to see how far back people look once the feature has been around a while.  probably a couple months at most.

I just find the vendor stat feature next to the vendor's name to be a useful tool.

There is a high number of churn in vendors due to many reasons as all of you can appreciate so favourite vendors can easily be removed when their account is taken off SR.

This can usually be done quickly when the stat disappears from the vendors name in the old SR.

Now I would have to check every one of them periodically :/

Just my input :)

I agree. bring back the ( )  even if you put the ratting out of 5.
so Vendor(4.35)

that way I can just times it by 20 in my head and know their rating to compare to old rating :)

but really need it NEXT to their name, save me clicking on everybody.

There is a different formula used for the average rating.  Multiplying by 20 does not give you their old % rating.

Exactly. Otherwise rival vendors will go to town on one another. And spammers will take advantage of it.

And unless SR staff wants to be bothered having to constantly moderate discussions, they should give the vendor moderator privileges to delete posts. Inflammatory post, false posts, spam(rival vendor spam, BTC scam spam), etc. would be most quickly dealt with by the vendor. SR staff might take hours or days to get around to it.

It's a nice idea, but it's always best to think about how things can go wrong first before implementing. Especially when people are anonymous and doubly so with the use of aliases.

I don't see how you can be connected if you are using an alias.

Would be a nice feature (and more anonym?) if buyer can change there stats like :

Normal userX-stats:
spent    $699.43
orders   14
vendors  7
user age 11 months

UserX-options:
Choose alias                [ ]
choose  amount spend [ ](max. : 699.43)
choose orders              [ ](max. : 14)
choose vendors            [ ](max. : 7)
choose user age           [ ](max. : 11)

Possible userX-discussion-stats:
spent     $200+
orders     3+
vendors    2+
user age   6+ months

Really like the new features/rankings,
keep up your good work :)

If someone left a comment on the discussion area for a vendor under an alias, and then ordered from that vendor, they could compare the stats and it wouldn't be too difficult to link the alias with the buyer. Trabsh has some good ideas above.   It wouldn't really be a bad thing or a big deal, but if you are commenting on a vendor you order from they could easily figure it out.

Please delete the entire entry when a user deletes their message! I tried it out on another vendors page when I first noticed the link assuming that I could entirely retract the post, but after deleting, the entry with my name still appears, sans message. Now it looks like I'm vandalizing other vendor's pages!

Best bet, give vendors the option to either enable or disable discussion on their profile and their listings if they choose. They should have the choice.

After all, if vendors have the choice to go stealth or stealth individual listings, there's no reason why they shouldn't be able to enable or disable discussion.

And you can even put a flag denoting that discussion is disabled so buyers know that the vendor chose to disable discussion.  This would be especially useful for new vendors who are vulnerable to attack from rival vendors and feedback scamming buyers. They don't need the have to put up with the double whammy of feedback blackmail and now discussion post blackmail.

This^^.

What is the point of leaving the name stamp and stats without the message. I have had another vendor play with the system apparently to ask an innocent question that he then decided to delete, so now there's no 'discussion' as such just this detritus left on my profile page which I can do nothing about. If I could clear it up I would, but I can't even do that. It's pointless.

Vendors should be able to enable/disable this 'feature' - its not needed at all IMO?

Possible discussion bug - I responded to the discussion on my profile, and now all the comments from others have lost their stats, which have all been replaced with the word "(vendor)".
Please see - http://silkroadvb5piz3r.onion/silkroad/discussion/user/aea5f26b5a

Also would be nice to have the delete feature actually delete the entry properly, rather then leave an empty placeholder.

Instead of pointless updates why don't we work on getting the feedback dealt with. Customers should be able to change their feedback after 3 months. I am sick of vendors forgetting to update their feedback then trying to do so a couple months later and simply cannot.

As was thought, SR admins are very slow to moderate the comment pages on vendor profiles. Clicking "report" is as ineffective as when a buyer clicks "report vendor."

When vendors signed up, they agreed to changes in commissions without notice. That's fine.

But they didn't sign on for things like a comment system that are out of their control and can act as another vector of attack. Give vendors the ability to activate/deactivate the discussion. And next time, how about having a vote on new features that affect vendor's business?

Would it be possible for category-based discussion to be limited to domestic if you are browsing domestic only? Would be nice to be able to discuss the domestic market, but currently it looks like there is no separation from domestic or not.
