I'll post weekly or so, just to have a continual feed, and important updates, but most importantly, if for some reason the forum goes down, we'll be able to talk on twitter.  There is also reddit.com/r/silkroad, though I don't control that subreddit.

A word of caution:  If you follow DPRofSR from a twitter account that can be linked to your identity, then you run the risk of twitter knowing that you are following me.  This could be shared with the authorities and used against you.  You don't have to follow me to get my tweets, just visit the twitter page through tor.

People following you with accounts they create over clearnet.
Title: Re: twitter
Post by: ChemCat on July 19, 2013, 04:19 pm
i would think that the downside would be clients from the Road.....logging in with their real IP and get logged....so....

now this is just my opinion...unless people create new accounts for twitter over tor...i think this is a terrible idea....just being honest, Bob  :)

A majority of people in this community think that Tor is only for hidden services. Whenever they see a clearnet URL, they automatically copy it to a regular browser and connect over clearnet. Posting a link like that guarantees people here will follow you over clearnet, which puts them in danger.

This is a great idea DPR.

Also, this is no different (security wise) from DPR/SR posting on Reddit as a backup means of communication.
It is a no brainer that DPR practices airtight security methods when using twitter/reddit.. and there is no reason to assume others won't be as cautious when logging onto twitter. I know I am.

While this is definitely true, I don't see how it's a downside for SR or DPR. Stupidity has been running rampant and accelerating at an accelerating rate. If people do stupid shit and get themselves caught, then that could very well be a long-term benefit for all of us.

This. Tor is not just for hidden services. You can easily browse the clearnet (well not easily.. it is slow) via the Tor browser.

I think it's a great idea.  DPR is a rock star so he should have a twitter like all the other rock stars out there.  And Kim Kardashian.  ;)

Thanks for updating the OP.  I can't imagine how many people would have started following you from their irl clearnet accounts otherwise.

Are you seriously suggesting that the admins should promote unsafe behavior in order to get their own users busted, to weed out the dumb people?

This is sure to help boost interest and let others know about SR...

as for us existing members right now, i wouldnt follow DPR or SR twitter/other social media accounts because it simply is more evidence against you if you get busted or if LE wants to look into suspicious people theyd just have to go to DPR's twitter.

That's clearly a hell of a stretch beyond my words. I'm saying that it isn't clear that DPR having a Twitter account is inherently risky for DPR, SR, or the SR community in general. There are costs to having a Twitter account, and there are costs to NOT having a Twitter account. Hopefully DPR is making the best decision.

I have no intention of opening a facebook or instagram account.  the backup URLs are all hidden services, as is this forum and Silk Road itself.  If there is ever a problem with hidden services in general, communication will be cut off without a clearnet channel.  Twitter is a clearnet channel that has hosted accounts like lulzsec and anonymous without censorship, so it was chosen because I doubt the account will be taken down.

No, I wasn't. I was simply pointing out that the existence of stupid people doesn't really speak to the relative value (to SR/DPR) of there being an "official" SR twitter account. Going beyond that is just an attempt to press my words into the service of an intent that isn't there.

This, and for those of you who think this is jeopardizing the freedom of the users of the Silk Road... How? You can visit the page via Tor without a Twitter account and view his tweets. You don't have to follow him, infact there is absolutely no need to follow DPR because it's not a private account.

So please enlighten me.

EDIT: Excellent job DPR, way to think in advance.

Additionally, what I think some might be missing is that DPR said this twitter account is for periodic updates/backup communication.. I don't see anywhere where he says he is going to start live tweeting his entire stream of thought all day and become a twitter celebrity. From what I understand, the purpose is for the benefit of the SR community. He is not in the business of seeking social-media viral fame.

Have faith that the Pirate knows a thing or two about security :)

not sure how to go about it, but you could always start another twitter account with a username that you tell us (or that you post in your signature) but that doesn't overtly identify you as DPR.

I think the fact they were able to pick up on this account so quickly is an indication they'd be able to do it again. I reckon someone reported it. Or they have some system of flagging when too many Tor users all try to access the same feed.

Just the letters "dprofsr" in themselves wouldn't have raised any flags, I shouldn't think.

@SilkRoadDrugs https://twitter.com/SilkRoadDrugs that is around.

Depending on if the DPR account comes back I wonder how many people may give into the urge to log into twitter and report Atlantis for something stupid.  Of course, it may not have been Atlantis who did it but could be any one of the basement dwellers who attacked SR a few months back, it's so hard to tell.

That's interesting and I wonder how he got reported for that as when I had a look the only thing you could do is report for spam.  From what I remember from the spammers who hit me occasionally, usually if a few people report the account it gets suspended pretty quickly.  So I wonder if that's what a group of accounts did, since I can't find a way to report for breaching twitters' ToS.

Very interesting to see how quickly the vested interests moved against DPR.  They must spend their lives hanging around the forum here looking for tidbits.  Now that is a sad life to lead and if it is Atlantis, it's a pretty crap way to run a business.

Take it from somebody who sells twitter follower services, One report does not even make it on the radar of the mods there otherwise.....well you know, It would take many and in a short space of time before anyone decided to review the page.

Perhaps I fail to contextually understand the extent to which people who may have been around long enough to be quite familiar with how all this works would actually *perform* such patently stupid acts. I am definitely less confident in my weighting due to that possibility.

So basically you do agree your comment was inappropriate at best, and downright foolish at worst? how ever many tangents you go off on, or how intellectually you word your replies.
It was inexcusable, how could you derive pleasure or any gain at all from somebody's  arrest? I 'd say you nearly ruined your reputation, and you were wise to not get into a slanging match with astor, as you would of been annihilated. now consider your self pulled and told don''t be so silly again.

To all of you expressing a concern for DPR or his wellbeing, I think you should take a step back and look at what he's accomplished in the last few years....

He obviously took the necessary precautions to access the twitter site....probably much more than the necessary precautions.

The only big problem here is what astor pointed out, that too many people think TOR is strictly for accessing hidden onion website, when it is (within certain guidelines) usable for most clearnet websites aswell. Undoubtedly people will probably end up copying and pasting the URL to their clearnet browser which has usernames/passwords saved and cookies enabled. An automatic logging in of your twitter account could raise some suspicion(linking it to the fact you've logged in and are directly accessing DPR's  'tweets'), but for anybody but a vendor or LARGE buyer this probably wouldn't even be worth the time for LEO.

Depending on if your a buyer or a seller, you should have more than just TOR (a VPN going too.) to keep yourself ultimately safe whilst using TOR, however that is a discussion for a different day.

I think it was a good move, a good way to communicate and an EASY way for any of us to remember how we can get back into contact with SR and DPR if anything were to ever hit the fan.

Also, I really wonder, how the fuck is the Atlantis account still open? They've probably been tweeting for months, they love media....

Guess they really aren't that popular. DPR's account got shutdown in a matter of a few hours

LE loves to subpoena Twitter for IP addresses. They did it with Jacob Appelbaum's followers, Occupy Wall St protesters, Anonymous members, people engaged in hate speech, threats, etc. That's why I was concerned about this. Does following DPR's Twitter account mean you're going to be raided? No, of course not. But it's best not to get your IP address on any lists.

This.

Not a bad idea to be reachable and have alternative means of communication but this is the grey area where i start to get worried.
We don't have to push it either.

Why Doesn't DPR just make a twitter account that isn't called "DPR" or "Dread Pirate Roberts" or even "Silk Road" ?
Maybe a pseudonym of some sort, like Camel Road, or Free Market (I know these are shit names) but just throwing this idea in... I find it bullshit that twitter shuts the account down within 4 hours! LE has to be involved, or Atlantis did something.. I don't know.. With a different name they have no right to shut a twitter account down without evidence or proof... I would think

Just a quick input from me here, DPR why don't you run a seperate hidden service from the main site and the forum just for announcements when people can't get on, so your very own twitter just on a hidden service that you have full control of.

Just an idea, probably thought about it anyway.

Perhaps a better idea is to put StatusNet on a separate server / hidden service.

I vote for this idea. Our forums are safer because they are separate (in my opinion, the only redeeming feature) from the silk road.

What can afflict one thing may not afflict another. Hedge your bets and keep as many systems separate as possible. Or do people think its safe to put all their bitcoins in one wallet?

I have almost 5 dollars worth of bitcoin, and it has been tumbled and stored in a wallet hosted by a hidden service. I feel safer in real life because my money is safe online.

like DPR thought, if hacking groups can have a account and stay up, even with large federal government agencies being attacked and humiliated... then certainly no one would bother a account that has very little activity and is doing nothing illegal.

I mean c'mon....anyone remember the 50 day reign of terror from LulzSec?  They also took down the CIA's website and hacked into the Senate's website.  You think that would be enough to piss off the government, to where they would order Twitter to take down their Twitter presence.  They had some 280,000 followers, they were in the news daily, but their Twitter page stayed up thru it all, and was the main place to go to learn about who they were fucking with.

Something funny about that.  How DPR can create a account, and it gets suspended so quick, but yet other accounts stay up, even while they're actively fucking with government agencies and doing all sorts of illegal activities.  Hell, their Twitter page is still up!

Probably because some malicious people clicked the report button enough times to trigger an automated suspension. Do you really think that Twitter employees identified it and personally suspended it within hours when he hadn't posted anything that violates their terms of service? I imagine they reinstated it when they realized this.

DPR, I personally suggest that rather than have the authentication link as a tweet (which will eventually get old and get pushed to the bottom if you make any additional tweets), you click "edit profile" and paste the link into the bottom-right most text box (set it as your website so that it is always there at the top).

haha, they did the same thing to me. I created a Twitter account over Tor to see who the followers are, and it was immediately suspended because of "things I tweeted", which of course I hadn't tweeted anything yet. I got it unsuspended by filling out a captcha. Nice system there.

DPR's followers are entertaining, as expected. Atlantis Marketplace, Patrick O'Neill (the Weirder Web guy), Nicolas Christin (the researcher who published that paper), All Things Vice (OzFreelancer), the CRO of F-Secure, even Zooko, the Tahoe-LAFS guy and author of Zooko's Triangle. It's a who's who of the darknet and the people who follow it.

Also some random hot chick. DPR, you would have so many groupies if you weren't anon.

I'm convinced now that using exit node IPs or changing IPs frequently will get an account suspended, because I've tweeted nothing, messaged no one, and my account was suspended again. So in the case of DPR, it may not have been trolls flagging the account or anything.

I had to go through the account suspension process too. They send you an email and then you have to write a response.

They didn't send me an email when it was reinstated but expect that within 24-48 hours.

It's a bitch because Twitter gets thousands of accounts created every day by bots over Tor. Blame the spammers, not Twitter. At least they let you create an account at all. The easy solution for them would be blocking account creation from exit node IPs.
