Title: SCAM: Dread Pirate Roberts Impersonator
Post by: EnterTheMatrix on March 01, 2012, 01:49 am
Hey Sellers,

Watch out as there is a person impersonating our great leader, Dread Pirate Roberts.

They are asking for 15BTC to join a new "Private SR Market Place" - The username is bullshit and just read the message, it's laughable!

I just received this via the SR Messaging System:

DreadPirateRoberts   A Message From Your Captain.

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

Ahoy! This is your Captain speaking.

We are happy to announce we are starting another brand new site called The Privateer. It will be an invite only sales site We will invite the high ranking, trusted sellers. You will have invites to be able to invite your trusted buyers. This is a secret site, not all buyers or sellers will know about it.

We have chose to take this direction by listening to your feedback on the forum, It will eliminate scammers and leave buyers and sellers relative safety. We also think it will be safer to trade larger amounts. For the time being we will also charge no fees on this site at all.

The site will go live on Monday 6th March, From now until then we will be inviting sellers to join for a small fee of 15btc after the 6th March deadline the price will be the same as the main Silk Road site. You are in the select few we are offering this discount too.

The Privateer will be run on the same codebase that runs Silk Road, with all of the same features you know and love. However, it is run completely independently with it's own servers, Bitcoin wallets, databases, etc. If it becomes popular, we'll even look into putting it under separate management.

You can send the joining fee directly to the new site by using the withdraw to address fuction in account to The Privateer address below or by sending to directly.
The Privateer Address: 1PB5P4eXJPnqsVfH2T9jU6srQ7q8DgB8v3

If you choose to take this offer your Silk Road user name, password and pin will be unchanged on The Privateer and will be copied over from the main site for ease of use. This will happen when the site goes live on Monday 6th March you will then be free to change them if you wish.

Again I must ask please keep this quiet until the site goes live, This is for the select few.

We hope to welcome you aboard The Privateer

Your Captain,

Dread Pirate Roberts

I just checked Block Explorer and looks like they have already scammed 7 sellers!

http://blockexplorer.com/address/1PB5P4eXJPnqsVfH2T9jU6srQ7q8DgB8v3

105 BTC already!  :o Not a bad day at work for a SCAMMER.

Please spread the word and let's shut these fuckers down.

Yea, I clocked that it was an impersonator also.

I think everyone should bulk sent a message to everyone they know, and post a thread in each forum immediately. I'm going to bulk send a message immediately.

Time is key, so do it ASAP!

Best regards, and hoping you weren't scammed,
Larghetto

I'm glad that you handled it. It goes to show the importance of you signing your messages and advising people to validate those signatures. The importance of authenticity and integrity cannot be understated on a site like SR.

$500 + for a bit of creative writing... not bad.

I wouldn't pity those who paid though, not too much. They did nothing to check it.

I notified DPR as soon as this came in and hopefully not too many people fell for it.  First thing I checked was the name all the past official announcements came from and noticed spaces in DPR's name.  Can't believe so many people sent them coins...but such is life.  The PGP Sig was a nice touch haha...

What if all PM's had a built in signature that stated something like "The admins of SR will never contact you about anything other than disputes, and will NEVER ask you to send BTC."?

Is that sort of function even possible?

Vendors should already know this...and not accept PMs from similar names as the admin's as an official message.  There's a bit of common sense involved with our current adventures.  Otherwise I don't think this place would still exist...

Wow, I got one of those! I thought it was real! I definitely would have checked the signature before I sent my coins though. I was sort of put off by their grammatical error, where they say "We have chose" instead of "We have chosen", but I just giggled and moved on. I guess I should have listened to my inner grammar nazi..

In your defense it does seem plausible given that the market is down for "Sheduled maintenance" at the moment ;)

LOL under what sane mind would he refer himself as Captain, and vendors who donate are blind since his username is different from the previous messages the real admin sent to the sellers.

Anyway nice effort from the joker.

I basically dont know how to check the PGP signatures so I took the entire thing and sent it to SR support. They kindly notified to me that this was indeed a scam. To me the red flags went up because of the lack of spaces in the name and it is always nice to double check when it has money involved.

I had to say it was clever. I did feel flattered.

the outline steps are:
- ensure you have Dread Pirate Roberts' gpg/pgp key imported into your keyring manager of choice..its available on the actual Silk Road site...

- find the forum text message, highlight all the text, ctrl-c / OR copy to clipboard...
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

Ahoy..
. . .
. . .
-----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
- ctrl-P / save it to a text file, name the file .txt and save it..

- commandline in linux is : gpg --verify path.to.text.file.txt
- this is the text you need to look for as output from the command : "gpg: Good signature from ..."

- can adapt the steps for the OS you use or Apps you're using, look in the menu there's probably functions to verify messages -not thunderbird..

 ;)

TO USD: It doesn't take much to be a good vendor here, just fill your orders timely, and make sure that people can't tell what's inside when it's going into the postal system/shipping. I have a 99% on 65 transactions by just not procrastinating and selling good product.

Bump for a little verification?

I've checked for a little while but I cannot find his public key in any of the GPG threads ( I even searched through all his posts like a stalker) and I don't see it on the main SR page. This clinches that I definitely need to have his key on hand to verify things.
