They aren't completely unfounded since consumer SSDs are relatively new to the market as opposed to HDDs. Honestly, when it comes to encryption/security, I would prefer an SSD simply for its speed. The encryption methods are equal for both types and if you have a solid base beneath you, neither can be cracked within your lifetime. In addition to my encryption method on my SSD, there is a dead man's switch. It performs a whole lot of writes to format the drive using the same algorithm as the DoD, before writing the contents of large wikipedia dump to flush the RAM. In the event that it is triggered, it takes about 30 seconds to execute on the SSD. I tested it on a 10k RPM SATA III HDD and it took about 10 minutes.
And FYI, if you are using Tails on a USB drive, you are using SSD tech anyways.
