I hate that article so much. If you read it carefully, it doesn't say "SSDs are bad". It says they have no bloody idea on if their sanitizing techniques work or not. It's pretty simple to use the same tech as SMART to test it which is exactly how you can see if data can be retrieved. Just like a MemCheck, you write a bit to a location and then query it to see if it came back the same as you left it. If you run that directly after the simplest format where everything is flattened to a 0, SMART will easily be able to see if any 1s remain.
So more or less its and unknown unknown and better to avoid it, 8)

Because if we have learned one thing in history, we really should fear the unknown. :)

Sad that this has to happen. I had an idea that might help. Instead of implementing a 50 post rule, we could limit postings from those who have a poor positive to negative karma relationship. Say a newbie has 1/-4 or something that shows their is a disparity between the two in a negative swing. I don't know the exact formula, but the concept is there. It could be accumulative in punishments like having to CAPTCHA, then u get locked from posting for 5 min, then 10, and so on the bigger the negative to positive karma relationship. I understand that over time people get negative karma, but it should be more positive than negative.

too complicated and open to abuse.  just lock em in newbie hell.  :D

Agreed!

I'm really only posting my agreement so I am one step closer to not ending up there myself.

ha ha +1

I done my time in newbie hell on the old site. it feels like the first day at big school once you make it out. ;D

HAHA im going to get stuck in limbo if im not carefull myself so i will agree with you guys ;)

And my axe!

Haha that's brilliant. When i actually get to 50 i'm going to +1 this.

Agreed!

@ASLONE: Thank you for wonder ful advice.

@YODA: I don't deal with kids on the street anymore. Far too dangerous for a girl.

@YODA & DRCLU - I went to a UPS store but they wanted my ID AND a utility bill for address verification. If i do that and my name was on list somewhere would they just follow over to the new address? Does that help me at all?

That's why I advised you have a trusted friend open one. You would be putting them at risk too though. Please don't tell me you used you real first name in your username?

I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. You pose a risk to vendors as you may or may not have been burnt by Nod. Obviously, you could go by a different name on the road and no one would be the wiser but you would be putting yourself and others at risk. Best advice I can give you is to have a friend open a PO box and have everything sent there but even that has a great many risks.

I wish I had a better answer for you and maybe others will. That's a rough situation.

Cool beans!

(not to sound like a nut job, but what's with the upside down Illuminati symbol?  That's supposed to represent dark?)

Generally it means female. Not sure how that works in this context...

Good point. In this setting though, since a block is so small and not easily recovered, the bits stored on that block would be useless on their own.

It is quite sad that this is necessary, but on the other hand, it feels like quite a relieve that he is (hopefully) gone for a few days now.

I think the moderators (especially Synergy) deserves a round of applause for his work! I think he has had quite a stressful day with damage controle, and I think that it is rather commendable that he has been able to keep his cool all day.

Oh no doubt. The poor mods have had to deal with that sodding idiot way too much.

I wish I could detail it, but this is a public forum. I will say that the formatting method is also used by hospitals and large corporations to Scrub disks when they have reached end of life. The Wikipedia dump is simply a chunk of data about equal to the amount of RAM that the machine has. As for the dead man's switch, it isn't physical. There are a list of events that can trigger it and I have done my best to ensure that the list includes any possible attempt to access the machine by anyone other than myself.

It also helps that the data on the machine would not be a terrible loss to me if the switch were accidentally triggered.

A three day time-out? What about afterwards? You know that troll is just going to come back. I think bringing back the 50 posts newbie rule after the launch would be a solid move.

On that note, I need to post more...

The 50 post rule won't stop him, it will barely slow him down.

It will discourage him from going through all that effort. Normally I don't like rules that are based on an exception, but this seems only logical.

Are your client's Windows based? You could configure a policy push upon handshake to modify the adapters on each client to not register their connection with DNS. That should stop the leak.
