Title: So let me get this straight.. you have to wait 12 days for PIN reset?
Post by: greenductape on January 19, 2012, 10:03 pm
I read from previous posts that when some people replied to the automated message 7 days after losing all 5 attempts to get correct PIN, they were told to wait 5 more days? Is this true or just a fabricated version of story?

Regardless, this policy is just purely useless and makes NO sense at all. Can someone from admins/mods or ANYONE please explain these questions for me?

1.How come there was no announcement at all letting us know about this new change? Was it that much of a work to write one sentence saying "hey guys btw, after certain date, you are gonna be required to have PIN or purchases"? I mean you wrote that long "State of Union" thing to justify why you are raising the commission. On top of that, you even had time to post formal response to how people reacted to the new raise. Was it really that hard to insert one single sentence addressing this new change for buyers?

2.How does waiting 7(12) days, as opposed to just 3 days, add any additional security against scammers? Yeah you might say 7days gives SR Support more time to deal with the scamming issue if your account got stolen because you went to the fake website. (I learned my lesson hard way too lol) But those scammers can easily go around this PIN system and now on the fake website, instead of having just ID/PW session, they can just make you type PIN on fake log-in screen. Yes, we (people who've been active in SR for while) know that SR never requires you to put PIN to log in. But, it is not US who are getting scammed, but it is the newbies who gets scammed. So, this policy requiring PIN for purchase (AND making us wait) is essentially like TSA people searching 90yo grandma's diapers for explosives.... unnecessary, inconvenient waste of time on both sides.

3. Some of those accounts made last year prior to whole PIN system were never asked to set any kind of PIN.. So how were we supposed to know what our PIN is in the first place? Here is what I think happened. As you guys all know, TOR is not stable as our regular internet. So, sometimes, I would log on but screen doesn't show anything, so I simply click new identity and log in again... and I believe in the middle of those cluster of laggy log-ins, "Set up your PIN" prompt popped up and that's why we missed it. If you thought that PIN was such an important "security measure", then why did you not make it mandatory so that we can't get to the front page without setting up the PIN?

Seriously, I've tried to answer these questions using my common sense, but it just doesn't make sense to me.. Oh btw, BTC market value went down from $7 to 5.5, so I feel sorry for my brothers ,including myself, whose BTC (in SR account) worth is just going down and down.. and guess what? BTC market value will go down even further for next few days. No one will listen or care about us when my100BTCs, stuck in SR account, will worth 50BTC by the time I get my PIN reset.

You shouldn't of forgotten your pin. I personally disagree with allowing resets, you should just take a loss.

You aren't being very helpful by telling this guy to just take it in the butt and forgo any funds in his account to SR, and if you read what he had typed you would have seen that he was never prompted to create a pin. There is no doubt that the implementation of the PIN (which SR called a second password if you want to be technical) was a bit botched to say the least, and that his theory explaining how how so many users ended up without a PIN is very plausible IMHO.

While there are users such as myself who were stoned while being asked to create a PIN and consequently forgot it, which was completely my fault, there does seem to be a number of users on the forums claiming that they were never prompted to create a PIN.  This could be attributed to desperate people trying anyway they can to convince the SR administration to reset their PIN asap.

But who knows it could be a legitimate issue as the OP mentioned that people were allowed to use to site without having to create one and ended up depositing money into their SR account without prior knowledge that a PIN was now required to make a purchase. SR did not do a good job informing users that a PIN was now required to make purchases; while there was an announcement that a second password would be required for withdraws, it was never made clear that it would soon also be required for purchases.

The only reason I did not fall into the trap that the OP and other users did in having BTC trapped in my account is because I make it a habit to change my password before making a deposit into SR, which is luckily the moment I found out I had forgotten the PIN.

Anyways it has been 7 days and SR admin finally reset my PIN literally while I was writing my post...THANK YOU SR!

P.S. while resetting my PIN  I noticed SR still refers to it as a second password and a PIN on different parts of the website...the administration might want to look into rectifying that issue to prevent future confusion.

You just proved to me how illiterate you are. I just said that I never set PIN in the first place. You should learn how to read first before making any comment. I will give you an example just in case you are still clueless. I can READ that you wrote 10 posts per day since you joined, which in itself is sad, but the worse part is that your comments I read so far, including this one,  all sound hideous. So here is my take home message that I came up with after reading and THINKING: take your pompous sad ass somewhere else.  :P

If they asked you a second time they misread your message, which can happen when answering so many. Just reply that you already waited the 7 days and they should get it taken care of. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Peace,
