These fellas blazed the trail, in terms of putting free software with source code out on the net.
Torvalds gave us Linux. Stallman gave Torvalds most of the tools he needed to write an operating from scratch.
Stallman can be a political asshole at times. Torvalds shuns publicity and politics.
Its no wonder that they despise each other.
But you, who use open-source technology, should offer a toast to both before your next hit.

Stallman scared me as a child. Linus is the man, though.

Stallman is a bit radical, but I think the principles of his GNU project, are one of the reasons why most of the web is free today.

My favorite I've ever seen was "I will poop on your fucking world" scrawled on a dive bar urinal. Vulgar, but the use of the word "poop" makes it funny. Poop makes a lot of things funny.
OT, Linux Torvalds is a personal hero of mine.

As I recall, Astanoff and Berry developed one of the first "electronic" computers.
Except for Alan Turing, who is another of my personal heroes, I don't recognize the other names.
In college, I took a course in Computational Theory and, of course, it was all based on Turing's work.
Turing was also one of the smart fellas at Bletchley Park that helped crack the Enigma code that the Nazi's were using to communicate with their U-Boats.
If you are going to discuss digital pioneers, you have to include William Shockley. He didn't invent the transistor (as some claim) at Bell Labs, but he was the first to see its potential in solid-state electronics. Too bad he was a racist asshole who thought there was something to be said about the notion of selectively weeding out the ignorant from the gene pool.
