Ok guys, breathe it's all good... 8)

504 is the current status of SR tor address.
502 was the status beforehand.

Below is a clear explanation of what they are.

SR being down would result in "cannot find the address _______________" or "request for ___________has timed out" after a significant amount of time in front of your browser.

We do hope this would never be the case ;)

-----
HTTP Error 504 Gateway timeout

Introduction:

A server (not necessarily a Web server) is acting as a gateway or proxy to fulfil the request by the client (e.g. your Web browser or our CheckUpDown robot) to access the requested URL. This server did not receive a timely response from an upstream server it accessed to deal with your HTTP request.

This usually means that the upstream server is down (no response to the gateway/proxy), rather than that the upstream server and the gateway/proxy do not agree on the protocol for exchanging data.

Fixing 504 errors - general

This problem is entirely due to slow IP communication between back-end computers, possibly including the Web server. Only the people who set up the network at the site which hosts the Web server can fix this problem.

-----
Introduction

A server (not necessarily a Web server) is acting as a gateway or proxy to fulfil the request by the client (e.g. your Web browser or our CheckUpDown robot) to access the requested URL. This server received an invalid response from an upstream server it accessed to fulfil the request.

This usually does not mean that the upstream server is down (no response to the gateway/proxy), but rather that the upstream server and the gateway/proxy do not agree on the protocol for exchanging data. Given that Internet protocols are quite clear, it often means that one or both machines have been incorrectly or incompletely programmed.

Fixing 502 errors - general

This problem is due to poor IP communication between back-end computers, possibly including the Web server at the site you are trying to visit. Before analysing this problem, you should clear your browser cache completely.

If you are surfing the Web and see this problem for all Web sites you try to visit, then either 1) your ISP has a major equipment failure/overload or 2) there is something wrong with your internal Internet connection e.g. your firewall is not functioning correctly. In the first case, only your ISP can help you. In the second case, you need to fix whatever it is that is preventing you reaching the Internet.

If you get this problem for only some of the Web sites you try to visit then it is likely to be a problem at those sites i.e. one of their pieces of equipment is failing/overloaded. (DO NOT Contact the people at those sites,....SR given example :)

Layman's terms? Maintenance of some sort. As to where the maintenance takes place? None of of our biz.

Be patient. :)

Blaze one.

Sure, if we were getting 403's or 301's that would be shocking. But 504's and 502's may also indicate some kind of overload. As the tor network is "self healing" permanent errors are not just annoying, but may also indicate that something is going on...

Title: Re: Is SR down?
Post by: streetpharmacy on August 10, 2011, 05:40 pm
I figured out why SR did not load for me. I downgraded to the latest stable torbrowser bundle, started it then stopped tor as i figured that my clock was a little off (i think less than a minute or so)! This somehow added up in the tor circuits leading to timeouts. So i resynced my clock while tor was stopped and turned it back on afterwards. it is working fine now

their clearnet site has this message:

Quote
So the server went down unexpectedly today. This was very unnerving because we thought it had somehow been seized or something terrible like that. Fortunately it was just some kind of glitch and we were able to reboot. Everything has been backed up and is totally current, but we are not going to turn the site back on for a couple of days while we work out a way to prevent such problems. We are terribly sorry for this inconvenience, but we want to provide the best service possible, and random outages just aren't going to cut it. We know it must be terribly frustrating, but we are taking the better-safe-than-sorry approach and we hope you understand.

That message was when they went down a month ago. I't changed since. It weird becuase on one of my machines i can get in every time but the other just goes to a blank page or 504 error.. i wonder if envious is right. LE is trying to block onion addresses or is messing with it somehow..

SR is down for me also. Question:  I deposited btc in my sr account this morning while it was working and then i got disconnected and could not log back in. So do I have a limited time to use those btc before my ewallet expires or something like that? I ask because i have to go to work for 8 hours soon. Just thought i read something like that.

Hey gang,

The intermittence just came to my attention.  The server is up and many people are able to access the site, but for some reason not everyone can.  We're looking into the problem and will post updates on this thread.  For those who can't get on, there's no need to worry about losing any data or anything like that.

Sorry for the trouble

Try this: set the timezone to the same as the destination exit node is (east north america, I think it was) then stop and start tor. Establish as many stable circuits as possible, then change the timezone back to your local one.
It worked fine for me

the problem seems like a bottleneck issue.  however, we've been scouring the system for bottlenecks and can't find any.  My hunch is that the increased bandwith usage from all of the new images isn't playing well with tor, but we'll see.

i am on an 8core macpro, but am able to connect fine now. mac users, point to the beta release of the Tor Bundle if you have issues.

the bottleneck seems to have balanced itself for now, but i do believe the tor is not playing nice with the new picture implementation.

either way thanks for the update SR admins. seems to be working perfect now.
