Holy fuck he left more breadcrumbs than hansel fucking gretel, ill compile a list.
1. Posted Gmail address containing his real name using same forum account handle used to advertise for SR when it started.
2. Logged into the VPN used to access SR and his gmail address from the same IP. I repeat, he did NOT use Tor to administer SR.
3. Use same public wifi to access internet 500ft from his house.
4. Disclosed that his timezone was PST in a message.
5. Wrote in his linkden profile that he had left his field to focus on "creating an economic stimulation designed to give people a first-hand experience of what it would be like to live in a world without systemic use of force by institutions and government".
6. Ordered fake ID's internationally to his home address (to setup more SR servers). The fake id's contained his picture, which considering what they were to be used for doesnt make any sense.
7. Told the DHS when they showed up at his door for the fake IDs that "anyone can go onto SILK ROAD and order fake ids".
8. Solicited the hitman "redandwhite" for fake ID's using his DPR account. Hitman obviously FED/RAT.
9. Asked on clearnet helpsite Stackoverflow for help with programming for a hidden service.
10. Changed his real name to a pseudonym a minute before asking.
11. Used code that he posted on Stackoverflow in SR's code.
12. Increased ire of LEO by doing a Forbes interview. Revealed too much about his character.
13.
Lets follow this up with a list of things that DPR did that didnt lead to his arrest:
1. Cashed out bitcoin.
2. Bought and used server space.
3. Properly configured and used hidden services.
4. Forgone having a girlfriend.
5. Rented a place with cash.

Not sure if I read it right, but I think one site mentioned using coffee shops to access sr, which also contributed to it. Don't quote me on that one though.
I honestly thought he would have been smarter than that, and not stayed in the US full stop... :-\

Anyone with any background in psychology could tell we had an American citizen with Western EU connections, living on the West Coast of the US. Proficient in computers. Radical philosophy.
San Fransisco.
Home of the yuppies.
Gave a complete psychological profile of himself.
It has been confirmed on his google plus people IRL knew he ran SR.
I bet this was called "Operation End of the Road"
-
Its sad but its true, some dumb yuppie kid thought he could outsmart the feds. Should have been some eastern european thug running it, this never would have happened.

All this time we thought DPR was a lot smarter.
I can't understand why he would be operating SR from inside the US??? He could of been sat in russia or cuba or somehwere and would of been hard to get at.
His biggest fuck up was storing all the data that he did. He stored information on each sales transaction. All SR messages. None of it needed to be kept. Holy fuck, they must have a lot on him and on sellers/buyers if they got the servers!
With the way he got caught and the mistakes that were made, it's fairly clear that there is no sophisticated back up plan about to swing into effect.
Let this be a lesson to everyone to keep your shit tight.

I agree with railroadbill - really disappointing to see he was quite a regular guy.
But I would have prefered asian matrix-style 1337-hacker living in some super futuristic tech-house rather than your regular drug thug or a fishy biz suit-guy.

Sad but true. Like Jesse told Walt in Breaking Bad, you need a *criminal* lawyer not a criminal lawyer.

so whats the deal? is there any way the vendors will get busted over this? I dont see how or why DPR would have stored our private messages or info. obviously the FEDS have control over this forum too. anyway they can use any of this info to grab us up?
Also, I never recieved my last 2 orders, maybe they were somehow seized? messaged read?

You'd think that a high level vendor, let alone DPR, would be dropping hints like that INTENTIONALLY to confuse his adversaries. Nope, he was just a tool that the feds ALLOWED to operate so they could ass rape him and possibly others.
The good news is that someone out there has to have the technical skills to run an SR clone without compromising common sense. If tor and btc are no longer secure, new protocols and payment methods need to be researched.
Come on kids of the 80s-90s, wake the fuck up! Those of us (you know who you are) that have the skills need to get off our comfortable asses and get to work. The spirit of the early internet needs to be rekindled, along with the talent in the cryptography and privacy communities. The groundwork many of us have laid down has been broken. It's time to stop being complacent and get back to work!

Alright, while I am seriously not happy about the situation, I think he is/was a standup guy.
He shouldn't have been so sloppy, yes, he should have been out of the country(that vacation? I bet thats how they ID'd him, when the site went down for a week in april) Shit, I can think of 100 other places than San Fransisco. I honestly had him pegged as living in Goa or the Bahamas, even South America. If he'd been in the Barrio in Mexico City, he would have been safer. Lets hope someone helps him escape prison, like in the movie SWAT, where the french guy puts a $100m contract on whoever can get them out, and mad gangs and shit bust him out. I personally think the site is in "cold storage", that the feds don't have shit, and that the site will be up from another country, with all the coin on it, in a month or two. DPR wasn't essential to the operation before, and he sure as hell ain't now.

It's always easy to Monday-morning-quarterback someone...
I'm assuming that this is a reference to hindsight.
All I can say is that I read the document (is it a request for an arrest warrant? I'm really not too sure) and think that you are being extremely calm and generous considered you're dropped right in it. I hope that those coins were obfuscated well before they landed in your wallet.
I'm biting my tongue about the social media fuckups as well as all the other crumbs that left a trail - it's not just criminals who use alternative emails for web based activities - it's extremely common, so I'm surprised he didn't think of doing it. I do wonder just why they decided to open that letter with the dodgy ID though, that didn't sound like an accident at all yet there's nothing in the document that details just why it was selected.

CLEARNET: http://forum.opiophile.org/showthread.php?46233-Silk-Road-domain-seized-DPR-busted-A-Sad-Day&highlight=silk+road
This has a lot of great info. Apparently DPR hired out an assassin, as well? R.I.P. Silk Road, you will be greatly missed... :(
Here are DPR's official charges: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B-xWkaBbpAxGWXVWT2o0UHI2NEE/edit?usp=sharing&pli=1
This is supposedly how they caught him: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/wp/2013/10/02/feds-arrest-the-alleged-founder-of-bitcoins-largest-drug-market/?hpid=z6
The government says it identified Ulbricht after a routine border search of a package that contained nine counterfeit IDs. The package was shipped from Canada to an address in San Francisco. When the government visited the San Francisco address, they found Ulbricht there.
The government then identified the primary Silk Road server and obtained an image of its hard drive in July, providing the federal government with a wealth of information about the Silk Road's operations.

Thanks for that Forbes interview, DPR, you dumb shit! This moron just fucked tons of people by running his mouth, I hope this piece of shit rots for being so fucking stupid!
I mean seriously, how fucking dumb can you be? GREED is the downfall of all!
WTF would you want to brag/interview about an illegal marketplace? That sounds like the worst idea I've ever heard!
I just got fucked out of ridiculous amounts of money, all because some moron couldn't shut his damn mouth...Great Job, fuck nut!
-
and if you haven't read it yet, here's the arrest warrant request (or whatever it is). Warning, it's on the Guardian website http://www.theguardian.com/world/interactive/2013/oct/02/silk-road-ross-william-ulbricht-criminal-complaint (http://www.theguardian.com/world/interactive/2013/oct/02/silk-road-ross-william-ulbricht-criminal-complaint)

Guys this has been going on before the interview. They got an image of the website in July. Just burn house and stop operations and act like you have a proverbial sword dangling over your heads.
-
Idgaf what anyone says dpr was the fucking man. Sure you may hate himcause he fucked upand fucked your money up but think of how much money he helped you make ! Think of the legacy he is leaving behind even now ! Dprwill forever be remembered!! i am thankful that i was able to experience sr!!
-
something that these later generations might NEVER get to experience ! god bless u dpr!!!

Page 28:
"on May 24, 2013, a Silk Road user sent him a private message warning him that "some sort of external IP address" was "leaking" from the site, and listed the IP address of the VPN Server."
Who was this user? Is almost sure that if he found the leak other individuals did it too, like NSA, he was going down sooner o later I think.
-
that user was SS
Silversovereignty
-
Guess he should of got the 8 or 9 figures he estimated he could of sold SR for when he interviewed with Forbes! You would think he would have hired the best and brightest minds to help keep this shit from happening and been in another country besides the USA for christsakes. One day later and the public library would of been closed due to the government shutdown. So ironic, fuck this sucks

What's this about DPR paying 80 grand to get a guy hit, is it legit or was he running his mouth?
-
All DPR had to do was look this up on youtube and watch it: "#HITB2012KUL D1T3 - The Grugq - OPSEC: Because Jail is for wuftpd"
DPR failed literally every single piece of advice The Grugq gives. Including:
- never log in from home/get a safehouse
- stop talking
- use encryption (lol.. ordering "hits" in cleartext)
- don't use social media
- get a hardware firewall to enforce Tor (DPR used a VPN to directly log into the server)
- avoid being put on a list, which is what happened to DPR when he was busted ordering those fake IDs (also, talked too much)
Everybody look up that video and watch it 2x until it sinks in.
-
I thought this server was the same as SR server.

It boggles the mind, no? There are small-time buyers out there that take more precautions.
At least there's hope that someone can still pull this off if they do it RIGHT.
-
Wait a minute.. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-24371894 indicates that this is the 1st DPR or that Silkroad never changed admins in the first place. the fuck? It says they trailed him all the way back to 2011 way before we all believed Silkroad had changed admins. Or maybe the 1st DPR had always access to the site?
-
I think it's safe to assume there was only ever one DPR......(judging from his fb profile pic of him WITH an actual DPR moustache and guyliner).
Anyway I'm off to do a long overdue heroin cluck. So toodles and thanks for everything, everyone. I love you all. I'll never forget what DPR and Silk Road stood for. Fuck the Feds. Stay safe and keep fighting the war against the war on drugs, you fabulous lot xxxxx
-
HAHA He truly was dtowns finest. Thanks DPR (that is the first time I have not used DP). I must agree he should not have been in the states. Hell he went to UTD im suprised hes not indian or running it from india. Once again thanks DPR i will throw some drugs out at preston and campbell in ur honor unless the murder thing was true.
Things we know for sure:
Murder is wrong
Murder=jail everytime
fuck you police... but not u murda police u guys are alright.
Thanks for the seed of drugs and revolution you have planted across the internet and civil society. No longer did a man have to travel to skid row to get high thereby risking getting hurt.
Gracias, Hasta luego
