Newbies, Listen Up Please...Ok, Now you all should Know that your Safety is at stake when you become Complacent and don't Update the TBB. (Tor Browser Bundle)  I will walk you..step by step to ensure that you've done things correctly once you have installed the latest (newest) version of the Tor Browser Bundle, which is at this time " Version 2.3.25-13 "

A)  Always check a couple times per day for new versions of the Tor Browser
Bundle. Also...create a new folder to install it in..**DO NOT INSTALL TO THE SAME FOLDER, DO NOT OVERWRITE THE FILES!**

B)  Now...once you've done that click the S  then click "options"  Therein you will see some tabs in the popup box....click "Embeddings"  and check "Forbid Java" "Forbid Adobe Flash" "Forbid other Plugins" "Forbid IFRAME"
Then Click "Ok"

C) Once you have done this..then at the Top Left you will see an Orange button with the words "TorBrowser"
Click "Options"  then click "Content"  Now..therein you will see a box next to "Enable Javascript"  UNCHECK that Box.  Then Click "Ok"

The rest....Do Not mess with....this is a relatively simple thing to do....you must do this all before accessing any DarkWeb Site.  Point ...Blank   & Period....

This is your Safety and Security that you're Dealing with here....TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY!!

I don't mean to sound harsh or an asshole...i believe we're all Family here....and from here on out if you cannot do as told to ensure that your security and safety is not compromised.....well then you don't need to be here....Period....

Hope this helps some of you :)

Our general rule of thumb is we do not sticky anything outside of messages from staff, but in light of recent events I think this is good advice for the mean time to keep active.  All newbies should be reading this!  Great post ChemCat!

Hey Chemcat,

Good advice. I just struggled through all this shit a few weeks ago so I didn't forget, as well as the hundreds of pages of FAQ printouts as reference.   I've been busy uninstalling  from C:\ and installing new new TBB via new bridges on ironkey usb along with wiping traces of old apps securely with CC cleaner.

It's been a few hours of work but almost finished. Even better than before.

I ALMOST went to http://silkroadvb5piz3r.onion.to . Notice the .to bad bad ju ju there.

Can I disable Javascripts after I've installed the most recently updated version or Tor? Or can it only be done in the process?

Great post! Thanks, ChemCat - safety is key.
I know a lot of people are unconcerned because they're buyers not vendors or staff - fact is: If they can't get staff or vendors, they'd happily nab a buyer to make a point.

Hi,
That's the way I did it because it said it needed an unsafe application or something to that effect. I shut tor down, opened my other browser, went to torproject and downloaded it that way. I had heard never to open a download in tor. I wish someone with knowledge would answer this question. I'd like to know also, and If I did it correctly

Thanks, this is very helpful.

Could someone please explain to me in simple (noob) words what happened on Thursday? I would like to know if my Tormail messages (not encrypted) could possibly have been read by an attacker despite having the last version of the TBB installed. Thanks!

Greetings,
As far as I understand, the dude (his network) that hosts tormail was busted for child porn (good). Unfortunately, that compromised all of tormail. As I understand it, there is now reason to believe that everything in tormail is able to be read by the feds. Anything that was not encrypted is now basically public info for them.  Having the latest version of the browser bundle has nothing to do with it. Tormail is a separate entity. That's the way I understand it. Do not use tormail at all, no logins or anything. If anyone can verify or correct any of this information, please jump in and do so, but I think I am correct.
Tiger

As I've learned recently Bitmessage https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitmessage is a good alternative to tormail. The biggest advantage is that it's decentralized. Haven't tried it yet, however.

Hello
I fucked this. I downloaded the bundle, extracted it, didn;t really know what I'm doing, OVERWROTE what was there and now feel stupid as it says 'Don;t overwrite'. So, here's my situation:

Downloaded Tor
Made loads of SR orders over the last month (B40 +)
Today got the bundle, extracted - OVERWROTE. Tor still works but I feel I haven't got the bundle installed. Any help???? I'm not the best computer person, so baby steps please!

Great work everyone, a real revolutionary gesture all this. Peace.

If you're able to post here, you've got it working.
I always extract update to the separate folder, then copy its contents to the tor bundle folder. then choose to replace files. tor and firefox should be closed when you copy. this way all your bookmarks, if you have any, are preserved.
Title: Re: Keeping your Tor Browser Bundle Updated & Yourself safe (Newbies READ)
Post by: Newguy321 on August 11, 2013, 10:34 pm

I extracted to a separate folder but I lost all my bookmarks including SR. That REALLY sucked but I was able to find my way back on. I did have my tor browser open when I extracted though. That is probably why I lost the bookmarks.
Title: Re: Keeping your Tor Browser Bundle Updated & Yourself safe (Newbies READ)

You'll lose the bookmarks anyway because its a new version. Same thing happens whenever you update.

That's a warning to remind you that some files my start applications that can connect over clearnet. A good example is PDFs with embedded links. The PDF reader will connect to those links over clearnet. That will happen whenever you open unsafe files, whether you download them over Tor or clearnet. It's perfectly safe to download the browser bundle over Tor and extract the archive.

I think it may also be good to under embeddings, Forbid microsoft silverlight, audio/visual, FRAME, and @font-faced.  I don't know what these are but I forbid everything just in case.

Also under noscript options on the advanced tab and then under the HTTPS tab, I changed it to Always Forbid active web content unless it comes from a secure HTTPS connection instead of Never, this is a good idea right?

Also on the Untrusted tab under Advanced noscript options I clicked all the boxes to forbid everything, anybody think this is a good idea or know more about this stuff??

Also under options and content I unclicked enable javascript, and also unclicked Load images automatically, and only click load images automatically if i need to see a captcha or something.  It seems more secure, although u could re-click the box when wanting to view some SR product images.

Any thoughts??

Also curious about this.

And if there is anyway to keep from having to disable java and forbid scribts evertime I start up tails?
Sometimes I log in to SR and forget to do this stuff. How much am I putting at risk by doing so?

Everyone do as much research as possible to stay safe. The security section on this forum is very helpful! Lets get it;)

Are there any problems with using wi-fi to do tor browsing?

I think if you use WPA and a strong keyphrase you'll be okay, but using wifi in general leaves you more open to prying eyes than if you were to use ethernet.

I did see that someone else asked this question but did not see that it was answered.  How does this work if you are running tails?  Should I assume that as long as I keep tails up to date, ie making sure to replace .19 with .20, that vidalia and iceweasal sould be up to date?  Or do I need to go through extra steps to update these programs?

Thanks,
Mighto Guy

Yes, "all i want is truth," I also am using Windows XP, and I also don't know if that is why I don't see an orange rectangle. But the setting is there under Tools, then Options (at least in my TOR browser). And, thanks again, ChemCat, for the info and the great post.

Thanks for the heads up. I have been saving my tor bundle to a locked usb, then delete the old bundle and restore it with a new version every time there is a new version, that way there's nothing on my hard drive. Does that make any sense at all. I'm open to any information to keep myself and the rest of the road safe. Can I make any of these changes to the bundle once it is installed? I'm not a programmer and I never went to M.I.T but I sure like to stay informed.

Just as an FYI, the latest version of Firefox (23) no longer offers the option to turn of javascript from the preferences menu.

From what I understand, Firefox doesn't feel it's necessary to include an option that less than 2% of users find useful, so they removed the functionality... well, that's not completely true because you can still turn off javascript from the advanced configurations:

type about:config in your address bar. Search for javascript.enable and double click that settings so it reads "false". Now javascript should be disabled. All of you should do this if you installed the latest version of firefox, becuase if you had javascript disabled, downloading the new version enabled it.

Peace!

Checking for updates is crucial, almost as crucial as making sure you have Javascript turned off at every point you can, JS is how they just took down Tormail and the like form what I understand.

Try using a locked flash to store tor on, that way it's not on your computers hard drive just on a disposable flash, know what I'm sayin...
Just some food for thought, if you have any extra food I'm always hungry for safety. We are all on the same road and should always be looking out for one another, at least that's how I see it.

How exactly do we check for updates?
the splash page telling you the current IP used will tell you when there is a new update :) otherwise the main Tor project site says.

if you are using Tails it'll give a notification after login :P

MY QUESTION IS THIS. i have been surfing the dark web prior to this. havent bought anything tho. have made a safe net email on here tho. so do i need to start ALLL OVER. making a new email and new SR NAME and NEW SR FORUMS NAME and all of that? Can someone please let me know. I want to be safe as possible here and not put any of the other Tor uses at risk by my mistakes also. Also a side question. i found stolen porn passes but cany watch the videos because flash is blcoked. is it safe to use them on my home ISP??? i mean will they kcik my door for using fake porn passes. They worked to get me into the members area while using TOR. but i was gonna get off tor and log on on SAFARI and watch some porn :) wat do u guys think??? whats the safest way to enjoy my stolen passes???

Ill sweeten the pot. 1st person to answer how i can browse porn on stolen passes safely can have a BANG BROS PASS. i think thats pretty fair. just dont chnage the password as it will make the account holder suspicious. and he will cancel the account. Somebody come with the answer so you can get this pass off me. IT CURRENTLY WORKS AS OF  " RIGHT NOW" lol

thanks for the link to the PGP club, got to figure out how to use PGP before i can test it out though (reading up on it right now)
I definitely take my security seriously so I really like the idea of PGP.
Quick question though, when messaging a vendor on SR should I encrypt the message or do I only need to do that when I'm sending sensitive info (like name, address)?
Thanks again

For the most part ...all you'll need to encrypt is your personal info to a Vendor..when placing an order...as far as msg'ng a Vendor ..you shouldnt have to encrypt anything unless you divulge personal info...and even then it is respectable to ask the Vendor if they would mind communicating with PGP

Ok, this guy, alexnadriaangel, worried why?   Because he was walking around with his dick out?  So what, you look stupid for a little while, no?  Big Deal.  Zip your pants, tuck in the wiener, no problem.    Why would you be concerned when everything you have done is heretofore is perfectly legal?

Why?  I tell you why.  Because you a NAUGHTY BOY.  You know you bad or going to do bad, why else you here?   Now slap yourself four time.  Now four more.  Ok, that's enough.  Feel better?   Good.    Do that twice dailry for one month.  You feel better and quit pissing pants.  Promise.,

Depends on your linux distro, but it most cases, no. On my distro for example, I installed the tor software from the package database, which gets updated (if there's an update available) when I do my weekly system updates.

Thanks for the info. I had heard you needed to install in a new folder and when I had tried to update the version did not seem to change. I have also left all configuration as default since there is quite a bit of config you can do. I know Java can been embedded with things so makes sense to disable.

Thanks ChemCat for the pointers. I was wonder if you (or anyone) could comment on the level of security I am using?

Currently I am using an anonymous VPN connecting with OpenVPN, this allows for tunneling through the VPN but also OpenVPN uses AES 256bit keys encrypting the data inside the tunnel. After the VPN is connected then I load the Tor browser which gives me my 2nd hop. I do not have any DNS leaks at all. And of course any communications is mainly done using PGP.

Any thoughts? Have I missed anything or could I do something better? Really appreciate any feedback.

To answer your question....Quite simply..... to Delete the Tor Browser folder and not just overwrite the old Files within your old Tor Browser folder.....Will ensure that you have a fully updated Version of the Newest Tor Browser...When overwriting Files....sometimes a File or two gets overlooked and...or ...Doesn't get Updated Correctly....

It is much More simple and Efficient to just Delete the whole Tor Browser folder & Install Clean....

well, that makes sense,  except I cannot delete the old files,  since they don't appear in my programs,  nor do they appear under C in "program files"

I'm a little bit lost here.  Perhaps you can clarify.

Thank you for keeping us safe but I have an issue and I hope I don't get in trouble
Please don't ban me for lack of knowledge
I don't have a computer at all.  I use Onion Browser.  I tried to research some additional security features but I just discovered Tor two days ago, this whole experience has been incredible.  And I haven't even purchased anything yet.  I tried to get riseup but I lack the two friends.

Any suggestions would be vastly appreciated.  Just as long as they're not "kill yourself"

Thanks ChemCat. Your simple instruction might have just saved hundreds of us from a life behind bars.

I read a few pages of responses and did see other people explaining about "the S", but I figured that I would add another answer to that question.

The "S" is the button directly to the left of the URL bar. Alternatively, one can access the options through the Orange TorBrowser button >
>click "Add-ons" with the blue puzzle piece
>in the new tab that opens click the tab on the left side bar.
>No Script is one of the extensions that comes with the bundle (in this case 2.6.7.1), click "options"
>This produces the pop-up that ChemCat refers to. click the "embeddings" tab and check the boxes that he told you to.

once again great post.

"A)  Always check a couple times per day for new versions of the Tor Browser
Bundle. Also...create a new folder to install it in..**DO NOT INSTALL TO THE SAME FOLDER, DO NOT OVERWRITE THE FILES!**"

Just wondering what happens if you install a newer version over an old version? I know not to do this just not sure what the reason is

Thanks

Check the Tor website regularly. https://www.torproject.org/download/download-easy.html.en

There isn't an auto-update feature or anything like that. I don't think it's really necessary to check it multiple times per day, but it's definitely a must to do so daily so as to avoid getting caught up because of some new exploit that they just patched.

what are you putting yourself at risk for?
Title: Re: Keeping your Tor Browser Bundle Updated & Yourself safe (Newbies READ)
Post by: isallmememe on September 08, 2013, 02:38 am
if y'all don't mind, i'm just going to quote a question i posted in another thread to see if i can get a quicker answer here...

Quote
i just downloaded the latest version of tbb and after exporting my bookmarks in the new browser i went to delete the old version as i obviously don't need the old one anymore. the thing is it wont delete, when i try it i get a dinging sound then a small window opens saying..

Quote

    Cannot delete libgcc_s_dw2-1.dll:Access is denied.

Make sure the disk is not full or write protected
and that the file is not currently in use.

this never happened when i updated before, the whole tbb deleted easily without any problems.

so i'm kinda worrying if there might be some kind of spy/malware that has got in and is causing this to happen. i know its probably not that but you can never be too careful i guess. here's some screenshots of what happens..

http://torimagesbp2vt3u.onion/i/Xk3a.jpg

its not all the files in the tor folder that won't delete however. when opening the folders and deleting singularly i found it was just vidalia.exe and 6 .dll files in the app folder

http://torimagesbp2vt3u.onion/i/wI7H.jpg

it seems these files have probably somehow got write protected for some reason but i have no idea how. i would still feel better if i could get rid of these files though just to be on the safe side. so does anyone know how i go about deleting write protected files?

thx

How many wallets do folks usually pass their coin through before sending to their SR account?  And how often to you update your SR wallet?

SR has it's own tumbler but to be on the safe side you could run it through 2 wallets. It's prob best to get a new address for each transaction. That's what I do anyway.

I was poking around after I read this thread and noticed that if you click on the "S", then go to *options*, then go to *appearance* that the *Allow Scripts Globally (dangerous)* box is also checked by default. Isn't the idea NOT to allow scripts? I unchecked it, was that a good or bad thing to do? I mean it tells you that allowing scripts globally is dangerous, yet by default it allows them. Can someone fill me in?

I'm not actually sure... I just went it and unchecked it. When you click the S it does say scripts are disbled globally, so that little box is a mystery, maybe it becomes useful if you don't have the scripts disabled elsewhere....

I think it literally means the appearance on the toolbar and what options show up.

If you click options and go to general you'll see that the Allow scripts globally is actually unchecked, meaning that scripts are not allowed globally by default.

that's my understanding at least.

Thanks so much for the valuable info. I am totally new to all this and am trying to learn how to play it as safe as possible. I guess it probably also wouldn't hurt to use a different avatar. Curious if anyone knows whether it matters or not using icons that aren't profile pics? Seems like an unnecessary risk, I plan to change it now.

**edit** Just changed my pic to something more generic. But I am still wondering about the risks of using profile pics. Don't they have software that can recognize images, say, from your Facebook page or something if you use it on a site like this?

hey gnOssos  they can read the metadata on photos taken with phones etc UNLESS you remove it ... there are threads in the security section to help with things like this

As for "allowing" scripts ... basically you DONT WANT JAVASCRIPT happening at all ... that said, you wont have access to the emoticons or quick replies if you disable it

I tend to 'allow' pages as necessary ... and then I "revoke all temporary permissions" to reset everything back to default JS blocking ... NS is possibly one of THE BEST security apps around .... together with Avast AV and I do an Anti-malwarebytes scan once a week, or as required

those check boxes designate what functions you can initiate from the NoScript 'S' .... if you leave a box unchecked you wont have access to that function from the page's "S",  you would have to go to options to chang
good luck everyone, just be careful and dont rush into anything as it's worth knowing as much as you can about keeping yourself safe ..

I ran into some problems updating my browser. I did not delete the previous installation and it gave me issues. It wouldn't connect to tor then when I got it connected it would not connect to SR, kept saying my proxy settings were messed up.

So anyway I deleted everything tor related, which I had to open task manager(in windows ctrl-shift esc) and had to kill a couple of processes in there, vadalia and tor.exe i believe before I could delete it all. Once I had it all deleted I redownloaded it and was able to run it just fine.

Just a heads up for anyone who runs into this issue, though if you have the issue you won't be able to get on here to find out how to find it :-D
