Title: First time BTC buyer
Post by: LazyBlaze on July 31, 2013, 03:08 pm
I'm new to the road and I have a few questions about getting bitcoins.

My plan is to use bitcoin.de, but to register it asks for an e-mail address and I don't want to use an address that can be linked to me.  Is it safe to do this or does anyone have any suggestions?

Once I've registered it should be easy enough to purchase BTC, send them to my SR wallet which, I think, is a pretty safe and anonymous process and then wait for them to arrive?

I know this is a newbee question, but I want to be sure I'm not going to give the police anyway to connect me to the SR.  I'm in the UK if that's of any relevance.  Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

local bitcoin.com
find a seller that allows for over the counter payments
you just go into a bank of the sellers choosing pay said amount into his bank, the bitcoins are then released from escrow to your wallet on local bitcoins
its a very easy process

It is always worth remembering that bitcoins are not illegal and can now be used for many goods and services, it is however always important to take your anonymity seriously so as the posters above stated just set up a tormail or other email account not linked to you to put some separation between you and your bitcoin acquisition. In doing that you will never have to worry about having to explain why you had bitcoins should you find yourself in a compromised situation.

Thanks for the responses!

I'll set up an email address with tormail shortly and I'm downloading Gpg4win as I type :) I think I'll go with online transfers rather than having to go to a bank. It's what I know, not to mention how mightily convenient it is!

To satisfy my curiousity, If I'm using an email account that is completely unrelated to me to buy bitcoins, then the only time I should have to type in my name should be when I type in my details?   As bitcoins are legal then I shouldn't have any major concerns buying them online with my card/details?

Lastly, what is meant by "put some separation between you and your bitcoin acquisition"?  And in what ways can I do this?

Thanks guys!

How do you mean 'online transfers'? do you mean bank transfer payment from your account? if you do they why are you even bothering to ask about anonymity because that is the least anonymous method you could ever use.

Putting some separation between you and your bitcoin acquisition means buying them anonymously, having no links etc. Buying them via online transfer is one solid link I might add so I would strongly advise against that.

If you can pay by cash deposit over the counter do that.

Some changes.

After looking around I'm going to go with bittylicious for purchasing btc.  My only concern with that now is that i don't want to deposit them straight into my SR wallet.  How can I "bounce the coins around" before transfering them to SR?  I'm not so worried about buying the coins online as it's absolutely legal :D

I've also decided to use gpg4usb rather than gpg4win, as it's much more user friendly!

Thanks for all the feedback.  It's all been useful in understanding what I'm doing on here.  Getting excited about making my first purchase!!

Sending your coins to your SR wallet should cause you no concern, they are tumbled before they hit your account anyway. I think you would benefit from reading the SR wiki in its entirety, read everything at this link and report back of you still have questions:

localbitcoins would definitely help keep more anonymity as you would not have to connect your bank account.

How do I set up a tor email?

Search for Tormail in your torbrowser search bar.  It should be the second result found.  Should be pretty easy to set up from there :)

Peace!

First time BTC buyer here, as of yesterday.  I simply met an individual at Starbucks down the street from me, paid cash and had btc in my account almost instantly.  You end up paying more for Bitcoins that way, but as someone who's really nervous about anonymity, this assuaged that.  Worked well.  And no bank account, etc.
