Silk Road Discussion / Re: Vendors who lost bitcoins on sheep
« on: December 01, 2013, 11:31:14 am »
Most vendors lost money which were in escrow

If Vendors want to put their prices up to cover their losses, Then i guess thats their way of dealing with it

Dont like their prices, dont buy, simple as that

This^^   We always pulled our coins out every time a customer finalized. The problem when things like this happen is every order still in escrow is gone. Having said that, we will not be increasing our prices and will still use escrow.

Yep vendors should pull their coins as often as possible
Its so simple

don't go putting up your prices on sr or bmr and expect us to pay for the losses that you so stupidly made. it was said after sr1 went down that you should not keep btc in your black market wallets. they are not savings banks for drug dealers. they are only there to enable the trade in goods on the site. you should be moving your btc out of your black market account at least 2 or 3 times a day if you don't want to lose it. sorry to say this, but..

ITS YOUR LOSS, DEAL WITH IT.

Some good points. If vendors want to increase there prices thats fine but i would avoid those vendors

I never said everything is fine but i believe the current escrow system is. I believe changing the escrow system just makes more scammers. You can't stop people who run Market places running off.
A decentralized marketplace is a different matter.
We both have different opinions lets leave it at that.

CaptainWhiteBeard

You are just backtracking from your previous position, which you stated repeatedly:  that everything is basically great and anyone who complains or suggests some changes is a whiner with "first world problems".  Lets just leave it at that.

I never said everything is great but we have it very good the fact we are able to experience and have access to dark web marketplaces ( the first in history)
I stand by all my original points
A lot of posts come across whiny and it sounds a lot like first world problems.
Like i said we disagree lets leave at that . Its good to have different opinions. The world would be a lot worse and boring if we all agreed

I am approaching it as a business person, i said the escrow system is fine. It is a different opinion to yours that is all. You came across all self worth, spoilt and entitled when you said ' our livelihood ' . If you grow pot, vend on a marketplace or deal in real life there is always a risk, that needs to be accepted. Dont get irrate if someone doesn't agree to your views. This is a discussion not an argument

CaptainWhiteBeard

Dude, I'm just trying to have constructive conversations with others who want to see this business model succeed, while you insist on sticking your head in the ground and pretending that everything is just fine.  Its not a difference of opinion, its many of us coming up with ideas to make things better and you coming in to say everything is fine.  That's a point of view, but its not really helping move our conversation forward because the premise of this thread, and the other thread we are talking on, is that things aren't fine the way they are.

I never said everything is fine but i believe the current escrow system is. I believe changing the escrow system just makes more scammers. You can't stop people who run Market places running off.

He's a Darwin Award; Category - Special Irony

Quote
On November 30, 2013, Walker and a friend Roger Rodas left a charity event. Shortly after leaving in Rodas' red Porsche Carrera GT, the driver lost control and crashed into a light pole and tree in Valencia, Santa Clarita, California and the vehicle burst into flames.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office stated that speed was a factor in the crash. Burned rubber and doughnut marks were found in figure 8 patterns on the road of the crash site, but it was not clear to officials if these were related to the crash.

The good news is this pair of selfish fucking idiots only killed themselves, having risked the lives of other road users, cyclists, pedestrians, and everyone else permitted to use the highways.

Like to race cars fast? Fine? Hire a fucking track.

I agree with this statement. The sickening RIP messages over facebook is doing my head in. Lets be serious not many people really knew Paul Walker. Thousands of people die every year that we don't know and we don't mourn over them

My point was that is your not sure or uncomfortable then don't use the sites until you see changes you agree with implemented. I do understand the concept and have been a vendor in the past. That is irrelevant as its not a discussion to see who is better than who.
Our livelihood? Look if you choose to be a vendor on a black market site that's fine but thats your risk and you have to understand there are consequences and all the best but if it fails there is no sympathy when you have no back up job in the real world.

CaptainWhiteBeard

Back up job in the real world?  Excuse us be we are full time marijuana growers my friend.  We are artisan master growers of fine cannabis.  I can work with flippers and local dealers and all the rest if I want to, but I am here because I love what this type of place CAN BE.  What it is right now is something else.  I never asked anyone to cry for me if I get busted.  But again, I'm here to make this whole thing the best it can be, not just sit here like a sheep (heh ;) thankful I haven't been sheared yet.

If I owned a site like this I would love vendors like us who are willing to spend lots of time thinking of ways to make everyone rich, safe and high.  You may have been a vendor at some point but you are not approaching this topic the way any self-respecting business person should.  Again, I'm not disparaging this site, its owners, etc.  I'm here to discuss ways to make it better for everyone, including you.

I think we are lucky to have sites like this to be honest.
I don't think customers will put up with the worry of getting scammed by vendors, that's why the escrow is there. If you dont FE, you have less chance of getting scammed and have the resolution center, which in my eyes worked aswell.
I know marketplaces aren't perfect but its a lot better and safe than dealing on the street.

CaptainWhiteBeard

I totally agree, we are lucky to have them, but you have to remember the site is nothing without a solid customer base.  What I'm worried about is many of them taking a hike because the whole system has become so unstable.  I am vending here on SR, and will be on BMR as long as backopy keeps it open.

And of course they aren't perfect, but the point is to make them as perfect as we can.  I'm not trying to bring anyone down or leave anyone's cake out in the rain here.  My main point since Sheep went tits up is that the incentive structure is skewed so massively towards site owners, who are basically winning the lottery by spending a few months building up a site and clientele and then skipping off with the coins.  We've seen it what, three times in two months now -- Atlantis, Black Flag and now Sheep.  I didn't get invovled in the first two but only because SR 1.0 was around and then Sheep and BMR were around.  What happens if SR2.0 gets taken down by LE and BMR closes shop like he's saying he might?  What's left?  Everyone scattered to the winds and susceptible to every scammer who wants to open a new site and get rich quick by stealing everyone's coins.

There will always be what ifs, especially with LE taking a site down. That is one thing we can not stop i believe

Exactly there is always an element of risk. If you are not sure, then don't use.

CaptainWhiteBeard

You just contradicted yourself completely in those two sentences.  Risk means you're not sure.

The point of these discussions is how do we limit the risk as much as possible.  Of course there is always risk, but going around stating things like "there is always an element of risk" is choosing to be blind to the issues.  You're not a black market vendor so perhaps you don't quite understand that concept.  It might be easy to sit on the sidelines as it were and demand we not worry, but we are paid to worry.  Its our livelihood after all.  Reduction of risk to levels that don't turn off customers and make the whole business model seem like an unstable freakshow with sites going up and down every couple months is what we're talking about.  If you're not interested in that discussion then don't waste everyone's time commenting.

My point was that is your not sure or uncomfortable then don't use the sites until you see changes you agree with implemented. I do understand the concept and have been a vendor in the past. That is irrelevant as its not a discussion to see who is better than who.

I didn't look at your avatar when typing that is all it was a query.
I beg to differ the escrow worked for 2 years and SR did not scam.
The bigger the vendor the more they lose yes, but with profits put a side and vending on other markets there is a hell of a lot more money to be made. I advise you just stick to SR for now. If your worried to vend. Or join/ create a decentralized marketplace. Or don't vend at all if your that worried. I think we are lucky to have sites like this to be honest.

There is nothing stopping you from not using any market at all. I understand trust is shaken right now, but sites like the SR are built to help protect buyers and vendors alike while generating new business.

Exactly there is always an element of risk. If you are not sure, then don't use.

Trusting anyone is extremely stupid in my mind. Every top vendor would agree

Escrow service may protect buyers, doesnt protect vendors at all.

It has been clearly shown to be useless again and again and on SR 2.0 this is no exception.

Vendors need a change, a sort of service that ties directly with there wallet or if not that then an escrow service that the admin has no access to. If this is even possible, or even if it could be proven I do not know...but still this is the only way I think escrow could be trusted and a site be fully trusted. Honestly if I knew anything about programming and coding I would create this site for sure. A site where the escrow is not able to be accessed by me - until the vendor gives me authority. And once I have that authority it can only be sent to the vendor or buyers address (sent to buyer if resolution determined in buyers favor)

This is what I would do if I could, but then again I am not even sure if this is possible. But I mean thats the only real way escrow can be fully functional in the dark market. Sorry if my opinion made you offended, just trying to explain what I think. I used to be a vendor on the old SR but gave up vending and was happy to find a non drug dealing related job on Sheep Marketplace. And I can tell you after I saw what had happened to so many people screwed by escrow I cant say that I would ever trust it and I never even got screwed by it in the SR takedown.

I like your idea in one way but the fact is that moving the escrow service out of the control of the site owners just moves it into the control of some other unknown entity.  Ultimately the system breaks down because there is no single party with legitimacy that can be trusted to hold people's coins and be a fair arbiter of disputes (what escrow was designed for in the first place), and the incentive to skip with the money is just too great for some.  I know we're all supposed to trust these SR 2.0 dudes but really?  Running away with millions versus having the FBI, NSA, MI6, Interpol, etc., etc. hunting for you?  Anyone with a brain is going to want that target off their back sooner or later, and if they can walk away with tens of millions of dollars with ABSOLUTELY NO CHANCE OF GETTING CAUGHT what do you think they'll do?

I'm not implying SR 2.0 can't be trusted, but I'm not saying they can be trusted either.  As someone above wrote, BMR is the only one who has been tested over time to not be a scamming bastard (and Ross Ulbricht, but he was untrustworthy in other ways).  I don't know the new SR owners any better than I knew Ross Ulbricht.

I'm here and I'm queer so I'm getting used to it, but as a small weed vendor with around 500 perfect transactions and not a single seized shipment on SR1.0, BMR, Sheep and now SR 2.0, I am going to be asking our customers to put their faith in us, not in a site whose owners they know less than they know me.  Until a hybrid system is put in place so that vendors and customers can negotiate how they want to work on each unique deal that's how we are moving forward, and hopefully it doesn't all come crashing down in the form of customer-flight from this crazy-ass business model.

I think the solution you are thinking is of a decentralized market. That is an entirely different marketplace
