I have been trying for a couple days now to configure Tormail with thunderbird on by Macbook. I realize there are instructions in the help section on the tormail website, but they don't seem to work on my laptop. Every time I try to send an email I get the error message:
Sending of message failed.
The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server tormail.net failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your SMTP server settings are correct and try again, or contact the server administrator.
And every time I try to "Get Mail" I get the error message:
Could not connect to mail server username@tormail.org; the connection was refused. (I also tried using tormail.net)
I would greatly appreciate if anyone could help me with this...
(Mac OS X 10.5.8 (leopard), Thunderbird version 3.1.11)

I have put in those settings but it still does not work. Is the connection security supposed to be "None", "STARTTLS", or "SSL/TLS"? At the moment I have STARTTLS with the authentification method set to "Normal Password" for both the IMAP and SMTP servers but have also tried several combinations that have still failed...

CaptainMal is right. Note that in this case, since it's a Tor hidden service, Tor is encrypting everything already -- it's pointless to encrypt on top of that, hence "none."

Set both security connections to "none" and still didnt work...perhaps I'll have better luck with torbirdy...

Once you added torbirdy, what are your settings for the port numbers, connection security, and authentication methods for the incoming and outgoing servers? Also did you use IMAP or POP for the incoming server? I keep getting the error message "connection to server username@tormail.net timed out" when I try to read messages.
