Have never used this method before, where is my best bet to purchase some from?

I found a local guy to do BTC conversions for me on localbitcoins.com. We've done business 4 times so far and I'm happy to know him. :)
I hope you're not just asking us flat out how to buy bitcoins. :/

Yep, part of paying your dues on here is learning how to use bitcoins. I'd just wade thru the forums a bit, you'll figure it out...it would take pages to post all the things we've been thru, and what we've learned, but basically, first decision is whether to go outside of SR, and use MtGox or one of the many outside vendors, or to use one of the inhouse vendors.
Inhouse, you have no protection, but it's much easier. There are several moneypak vendors: you go buy a moneypak, send them the numbers, and they'll send you bitcoins. I've used recently CaptainMal, and before him SmartCoin. Also have used SugarMama before, no problems, and btcKing. So check out main site, then come back here and search a bit, there is plenty on bitcoins to learn, we've all had to do that...best wishes....
