Title: Zero Fill External Drives
Post by: yokes101 on July 23, 2013, 05:50 pm
Anyone know how a tool (preferably free) for zero filling external drives.

I have an external hard drive that really needs to be wiped as well as some USB keys.

Much Love!

DBAN will do it. You can select a zero fill, a random write, or 2 random writes and a zero fill.

Yeah but can DBAN work on external drives? USB keys too?

I believe CCleaner (which any Windows user should be using already) can do this as well. Just dig through the settings page and select the drive(s) you want wiped and the number of passes. This takes a long time, which I'm sure you're well aware.

Yes, in fact, if you wanted to overwrite everything at once (including the main hard drive), you could plug all storage media into the computer and there's a one click option to "nuke" everything.

I doubt you want to do that, though. You can select the media that you want to overwrite.

DBAN is most probably backdoored now it's been bought by BLANCCO. I use another wiping software I won't mention it's name but it's better than DBAN.

Wiping flash memory (USB sticks) is unreliable at best. Your best bet is to throw them out (covertly), buy new ones and always keep them encrypted.
