Title: TOR meant to hide your IP something I dont get?
Post by: slash on June 18, 2013, 05:23 pm
Every website that I went on using tor does recognize the IP is suspect or they say I am using an anonymous proxy
So here is my question If they are able to recognize this they surely are able to find your real IP?
If anyone can get into specifics would be very nice?

thank you

Tor is the most popular anonymity network and widely used by spammers and other abusers. The exit node IPs are added to block lists that thousands of web sites use. Of course the web site can see the exit node IP, which it matches to an IP on its block list. That doesn't mean it can see your IP. There are attacks that could reveal your IP, but there's nothing in the default way Tor works that reveals your IP.

That's why you can't use Tor to log into your account at sites like MtGox, PayPal, or (probably) your bank.  These websites have a copy of the blacklist previously mentioned and even if they allow you to log in, your account may be locked down immediately.  I've had websites throw up a "No Tor or Proxy Access Allowed" banner.
I logged into my MtGox account via Tor a few years ago and immediately I couldn't make trades or send money. Same thing happened with PayPal, and I had to talk to a representative to get my account restored (this was back in the early days when you actually could use PayPal to buy Bitcoins  ;D ).

This just goes to show that while your identity is (probably) safe, the websites you visit may be well aware of the fact that someone is using Tor to access their content.

thanks for the replies
I got it a little better

ok that means there is a difference between real IP and proxy right
I though that using a proxy was using someone elses IP
Can I use a real IP as a proxy?

Proxies have real IP addresses, they're just not *your* real IP address.

If you want a response from the web site, you have to put a real IP address in the packet header. The only time people don't is if they're doing syn floods and stuff like that (basically DOS attacks).

Well put.
