Title: Should a user change their SR bitcoin wallet address periodically?
Post by: nola747 on June 15, 2013, 09:59 pm
Referring to the "wallet" ID that is tied to an account, should this be created anew periodically?  Every time after an order?  Does it matter at all?

I know that SR "tumbles" the transaction... it would appear, following on the blockchain, that after BTC is sent to the SR wallet ID, it gets broken up and tumbled through various other transactions, which is great.  But I'm wondering, does it matter what that initial ID being sent to is?  Is that metadata something traceable over time, etc?  Should users regenerate the ID for the wallet often?  I hate to fix what isn't broken, but it would seem that at a minimum, the services sending BTC to that wallet (e.g., exchanges, personal online wallets, etc) will record repeated sends to that one ID if not changed.

Any thoughts on this?

I read a thread while back where a moderator suggested renewing the deposit address every time right before making the deposit.. I've personally only renewed mine once. :P.. haven't had any problems either.. but I imagine in the long run it never hurts..

Change it before and after each deposit or withdrawal to make your wallet as untraceable as possible, if you always use the same wallet when receiving funds it's pretty easy to link you to all of those wires.

The Bitcoin people say that you should create a new address for every transaction. Even if you don't care about your privacy, it protects the privacy of the people you are trading with. In our case, sending to the same address links those transactions. So if you fuck up once, for example by sending directly from MtGox to your SR address, then the other deposits can be linked to you, and those transactions could be traced to accounts on other services.

Realistically it's probably not a big deal, because LE is unlikely to be going after small time buyers. If you are a vendor, then you should definitely withdraw to a different address each time.

I also wonder if it taxes the SR server too much. I've never operated a wallet with tens of thousands, or perhaps hundreds of thousands of private keys. :)

I change mine every time I make new deposit of coins, after they have been deposited.
Better to be safe than sorry as the old saying goes. Makes it harder to trace.

^This. I deposit BTC from the seller to a new address on Electrum Wallet, from my wallet to SR, and then change my SR wallet address so it's new for next time. Changing it again before and after depositing might be a good idea. I like that.
