A much overlooked part of our community is the silcroad IRC server. It's a great place to chill and get to know people, and of course it's totally anon.
If you're bored and looking for people to chat with, stop by!
Don't know what IRC is? Not sure how to log on? No problem.
Download Pidgin from http://pidgin.im/
UPDATED INSTRUCTIONS 2013-09-20 by Atomos
Here's a tip for correct account setup in pidgin for security:
Basic Tab:
Username: You choose your nick obv. (forum name preferred)
Server name: silcroadg3c3mtu6.onion
Password: LEAVE-BLANK
Local Alias: LEAVE-BLANK
Advanced Tab: (important)
Port: 6667
Enc: UTF-8
Username: DO NOT LEAVE BLANK - Windows users - it will take your account name, i've warned about this before. Anything BUT blank.
All 3 tickboxes unchecked
Proxy Tab: (important)
Standard OS with TorBrowser:
Proxy Type: Tor/Privacy (SOCKS5)
Host: 127.0.0.1
Port: 9150 (If you use an older tor version, or standalone: port 9050) It will be 9150 or 9050 - try the other if you get "Connection Refused"
User/Pass: BLANK
Tails / Whonix / TorLiveCD:
Proxy Type: Use GNOME Defaults
That's it - Tails/Whonix are setup to route EVERYTHING through tor, there is no need to change this. (You'll just break it if you do)
Right, so the people have spoken, they wanted their own room away from prying eyes and trolls - we call this #cheers. When you join for the first time you'll just be stuck with a pidgin window saying "Available"
Now Click "Buddies / Join a Chat / Room List (button)"
Join #public after posting here to say "hello, this is me that's joining" - Then make yourself known, or msg me over irc. This way we know you own the nick, verify you and put you on the auto invite list.

Trappy, is your browser bundle running? Pidgin needs to go through Tor. Don't shut down TBB.
Other than that, it should work as I wrote it above. Did you get the server right? In the advanced tab, is the Port set to 6667?
Does it give you any error messages?

Trappy, if all else fails, try port 9050 instead of 9150.

It says, "connection refused."
If you get a connection refused error when you try to connect like trappy did here try alternating the port between 9150/9050 this was changed after the bundle was updated but this should fix it if you have issues

HEATfan, you're not late. The party's just getting started.
Ro-Jaws, if you're running Pidgin in Whonix, you don't have to configure the networking with Tor/Privoxy at 127.0.0.1:9050. Just run it normally, with no proxy stuff, the Gateway automatically proxies it. If it still doesn't connect, it will probably because you're trying to access an onion address.
You need to get on the Gateway and add this to the end of /etc/tor/torrc
mapaddress 10.10.10.10 silcroadg3c3mtu6.onion
Reload Tor: sudo /etc/init.d/tor reload
Then in Pidgin set the server to 10.10.10.10 instead the onion address.

hi all, trying to join, got pidgin on tails, when i select it it take me straight to my "buddy list" cant seem to find where to enter the server details, Anyone tell me seeing as i seem to be a complete idiot, Dont wanna miss the naked twister!!

As long as you don't reveal anything personal about yourself. It's a hidden service, about as safe for users as the forum.
How often you all chat?
People are there all the time, but some times are busier than others. If nobody is talking when you come in, stick around for a while and people will start talking.

I need some more info.
Open Help -> Debug Window. When I connect to the silcroad server, I see these lines (with some omitted):
account: Connecting to account astor@silcroadg3c3mtu6.onion.
dnsquery: Performing DNS lookup for 127.0.0.1
dnsquery: IP resolved for 127.0.0.1
proxy: Attempting connection to 127.0.0.1
proxy: Connecting to silcroadg3c3mtu6.onion:6667 via 127.0.0.1:9150 using SOCKS5
socks5 proxy: Connection in progress
socks5 proxy: Connected.
socks5 proxy: Able to read.
proxy: Connected to silcroadg3c3mtu6.onion:6667
You should see a similar sequence of events. At which step does it fail?

Not supported via TAILS live CD.
Can't get it, there is no where to join or type anything.

Ok, both of you are on Tails. The problem is easy to fix. Change the proxy settings to the "Gnome default" or however it's worded. Don't use the Tor/Privacy option.
Accounts -> Manage Accounts -> <chat service name> -> Modify -> Proxy tab

OP updated. If you are a Tails user, please re-read the original post. Don't change your proxy settings from the Tails default.

In the few times I've been on the IRC channel, I've noticed an alarming number of individuals claiming to be people that they are not and/or are trolling. Would it be possible for confirmed and reputable users of SR (via forum PM confirmation) to have autovoice functionality? I know there are a few individuals already setup as such, but I think this would help mitigate a bit of the idiocy seen on the channel.

Not sure if this is already covered in the thread (and thank you to those who pointed this out), but Pidgin logs all your chat activity by default. And if you happen to be a Windows user, it stores this information (and all your chat nicks and settings) unencrypted in your UserData folder (irregardless of where you actually installed Pidgin).
So it's probably a good idea to disable chat and IM logging, and delete the old logs, and move your settings to an encrypted partition.
For example if J: is your encrypted drive:
1. With Pidgin closed, find the .purple data folder for Pidgin (in Windows this will usually be in a location like this:)
C:\Users\mcguire39\AppData\Roaming\.purple
2. Move that folder t your encrypted drive (J: for example)
J:\Users\mcguire39\AppData\Roaming\.purple
3. Make a symlink from your C: to J: so that Pidgin still works properly:
(From command prompt running as administrator):
cd /d C:\Users\mcguire39\AppData\Roaming
mklink /D .purple J:\Users\mcguire39\AppData\Roaming\.purple
symbolic link created for .purple <<===>> J:\Users\mcguire39\AppData\Roaming\.purple

cant get it working, fuck, i get "connection refused" all the time, tried changing the port 9050 to 9150, nothing, this on windows, ideas?

Are you using Vidalia/TorBrowser? I'll assume you are. Go to Vidalia -> Settings -> Advanced. Make sure "Configure ControlPort automatically" is UNchecked. The standard ControlPort is 9151, which makes your SocksPort 9150. Click "Edit current torrc". Do you see "SocksPort 9150" or another SocksPort in there?

anyone use pidgin for mac ? I think I gotta dl the pidgin source ? no installer and says sumthin about usin adium instead... any other alternatives or help to set it up ??? thx

What is that Jabber actions stuff? You're not connecting to a Jabber/XMPP server.
Go to Accounts -> Manage Accounts -> <chat service name> -> Modify -> Basic tab.
Make sure the protocol is set to IRC.

You're using the browser bundle on Windows right? It should be port 9150 and Tor/Privacy is the right setting.
That's why I'm perplexed.

IM not using the browser bundle, nothing, just the pidgin client, i use the browser tor on the VM.
I have runnin COMODO, but even turning off got the same issue...

If so, then yes change the Tor/Privacy back to Gnome default. :)

Sorry if i misspelled something, im running the PIDGIN on WINDOWS, and dont have any browser bundle or anything there.

Ok I got it. Anything that ends in .onion is a hidden service and you need Tor to connect to it. You need to start the browser bundle and leave Pidgin with socks port 9150. Then you can connect.
And I mean, start the browser bundle on Windows, not the VM. Tor has to be available to Pidgin.

A more detailed description of your setup would be helpful.
Are you on Tails? If so, change Tor/Privacy back to Gnome default in the proxy settings.
If you're on Windows, did you set the right port? It's 9150 when using the Tor that's bundled in TBB, but 9050 for the standalone Tor.
Also, sanity check: is some copy of Tor actually running?

If you get a buddy list window that says available and does nothing, try "Buddies/Join a Chat/ click "Room list" - you'll find #public there.

2. Type /msg nickserv register YOURPASSWORD (Unique and not something you use ever - but not OTT, it's only an IRC nickname - as you'll only have 60 seconds to type it in next time) (making this auto is easy, just ask in chan)
Congrats, you're registered and just need to send me a message over here (the forums) and you'll be added to the verified list.
Once done, you can join the verified members room where all the chat seems to be.
Now, time to trip balls and talk the funky talk.

Just another friendly reminder: When you join #public you may not see many people, or there may not be anyone chatting at all. Thats because all of the fun stuff happens in #cheers. Follow the instructions in the topic when you join #public and if you have any problems, shoot one of the mods a pm (please only do this after you've tried everything) and we'll sort you out!

Couple small but highly effective tutorials for you upcoming chat warriors and heroines that use pidgin:
AUTO-IDENTIFY:
To set a buddy pounce to auto identify (so you don't have to identify with nickserv each time you log in)
Type /query nickserv
Click conversation
Add buddy to your friends list (if nickserv isn't on your friends list this wont work)
Then add buddy pounce. In the pounce enter "identify yourpassword" (no slash, no quotations)
Checkmark Recurring
Checkmark "Pounce when buddy signs on"
That should do it for auto-identify
AUTOJOIN:
Click the tab/name of chatroom #cheers
Click Conversation
Click Add..
You'll see a popup dialogue in that window it'll have a small box which says "autorejoin when account connects" CHECKMARK THAT!!
AND YOU'RE DONE! See how easy? ;)

the IRC server is only accessible through Tor :-\ so it will not work clearnet.. maybe look into setting tails up on a USB drive :) its pretty simple an be configured to work, just add the SR IRC and good to go! or just go through your settings one more time an see what could possibly set wrong..

Right, so the people have spoken, they wanted their own room away from prying eyes and trolls - we call this #cheers. When you join for the first time you'll just be stuck with a pidgin window saying "Available"
Now Click "Buddies / Join a Chat / Room List (button)"
Join #public after posting here to say "hello, this is me that's joining" - Then make yourself known, or msg me over irc. This way we know you own the nick, verify you and put you on the auto invite list.
Here's a tip for correct account setup in pidgin for security:
Basic Tab:
Username: You choose your nick obv. Server name: silcroadg3c3mtu6.onion
Password: LEAVE-BLANK Local Alias: LEAVE-BLANK
Advanced Tab: (important)
Port: 6667 Enc: UTF-8
Username: DO NOT LEAVE BLANK - Windows users - it will take your account name, i've warned about this before. Anything BUT blank.
All 3 tickboxes unchecked
Proxy Tab: (important)
Standard OS with TorBrowser:
Proxy Type: Tor/Privacy (SOCKS5)
Host: 127.0.0.1 Port: 9150 (If you use an older tor version, or standalone: port 9050) It will be 9150 or 9050 - try the other if you get "Connection Refused"
User/Pass: BLANK
Tails / Whonix / TorLiveCD:
Proxy Type: Use GNOME Defaults
That's it - Tails/Whonix are setup to route EVERYTHING through tor, there is no need to change this. (You'll just break it if you do)

Install OTR now if you don't have it - there's a list of supported clients on their site. Once installed, goto plugins/off the record - Copy the fingerprint and put it here, in your profile.
WINDOWS - STOP IT. Virtualbox and linux is free, Whonix is free, Qubes is free - USE THEM.
Fuck, grab a copy of virtualbox and throw a copy of tails on there - pidgin and OTR is preinstalled (i think.) It's not much, but it's damn better than your own copy of windows that you SHOULD NOT be using for any of this business.
So that's your homework, next time you load up your client, it better fucking be on linux et al with OTR ready to go and your public otr fingerprint in your profile.

We may have maxed out the number of allowed Tor connections, who knows. Does the Pidgin debug window say anything? 5 or 6 people have made it on already, so the info is correct and it does work.
Irc2p is a weird mix of servers, including Irc2p, Anonet and Nameless IRC, which have different rules. We first connected to Anonet and there were no services (NickServ, ChanServ), then we reconnected through this server and couldn't join #cheers, so that's why we're stuck with #ch33rs. But at least we have some control over random people coming in.
I've looked into the error I'm getting a bit further. If I try to connect with putty configured for the same tor bundle proxy, it says "Proxy error: connection not allowed by ruleset" which sounds at first like the port is blocked in the proxy configuration, but I've read online this is not necessarily the case. If the tor proxy is told by the tor server that the specified onion service does not have that port open, the tor proxy tries to be too smart for its own good and returns the above misleading error to the client. So, I think there is some problem with that onion hostname and port, either a limitation in connections or else it isn't working from all nodes.
Nevermind, I'm apparently dyslexic tonight and typed in 3128 instead of 3218.
