I'm also interested in this.  Anyone care to give a tor for dummies explanation about why you shouldn't browse clear net on tor?  Also curious, does VPN > TOR add an extra layer of security or no?

Any site is safe to browse through tor (with the exception of the few site that won't work through the TOR browser,  in which case they simply will not work) I browse everything I can  through tor.  Remember that through TOR you are always good as long as you don't try to log into facebook or anything like that hahaha

From what I've read it seems everything is safe on TOR. I think the reason they say not to browse in a clearnet browser and TOR is in case you mix the two up :/ I really have no idea, though.

Thanks for the fast reply guys :D

So you can just, say, look things up via google, access site from a search and be safe and anonymous? I started getting nervous hearing people saying never to access the clearnet via tor.. but couldn't understand why..

Startpage is not Google.  The results are much different.  Everything is safe on TOR if you have java/javascript/flash/plugins disabled.  Bing IS Google.  They copy Googles results.

StartPage is using the exact same Spiders as Google to complete its searches. It even says "Enhanced by Google". I never said that it was Google, Just that StartPage is the Google that doesn't record your searches.

I see.  They yield different results for me.  Startpage's results always disappoint me. :(

From my understanding, Tor is what keeps everything anonymous, so browsing clearnet sites should, theoretically, be ok. Just for the sake of keeping things simple, though, I usually only browse darknet sites on Tor. Clearnet easily accessible thru another browser.

I agree that the results seem to varie from actual Googles lol And They are a bit disappointing as well.  It would be nice to see SP set up more like Google hahaha.

Tor wasn't just designed to be some kind of self-contained "sub-internet" of onion sites, so of course you can go to clearnet sites. The benefit is that you can visit them anonymously. That's the point of Tor.

It's a common misconception that hidden services are safer than clearnet. Hidden services provide anonymity for the server. They don't protect your anonymity any better. Tor gives you anonymity on both clearnet and hidden services.

That being said, hidden services can prevent users from screwing up in some cases. For example, if you are connecting to an XMPP server over Tor and you accidentally disable the proxy settings, you will connect directly to a clearnet site and expose your IP address, while it will simply fail to reach a .onion address.

onion sites connect to the tor network to hide their physical location from tor users. Clearnet sites are just normal websites and their location can be identified.

Don't think of Tor as being "secure," think of Tor as a method to provide anonymity. Anything you do that breaks the anonymity Tor provides will make you less secure.
