Title: google caching forum via onion.to
Post by: jase00 on May 27, 2013, 10:51 am
so... I might be a little slow and this is common knowledge but google seems to be caching this  forum via the onion.to gateway site... is that new ?? or has google been caching it for a while now.. ?

is their a way to stop it happening ?
Obviously people can just login to the forums to read stuff.. but sweet jesus.. why make it *that* easy all they need to do is load up google ???

hmm I suppose caching isn't the right term... indexing is perhaps what I should of used..

yeah its been indexing it for a while now - don't think it can be 'stopped' as it's because of the rising publicity of SR that there are more and more people 'googling' it

back in early 2000 when I used to do web design / hosting it could be stopped with meta tags and robots.txt etc....... so kinda confused.. unless those methods don't work anymore ?

lol no im not coming here via onion.to

I noticed it because I googled something on the forum.. and it came up word for word and I was like 'oh.. that looks familiar' then noticed the url....

*edit* You guys understand how google indexs stuff right..... ?

*edit2* just to confirm.. its not just the url that comes up.. its threads, everyone's profiles... search into google for "yourusername".. mines comes up with the forum profile link #1.
This is not due to people googling/searching for anything... (or even people coming here from onion.to) its due to google trawler bot (or whatever they use these days) indexing everything... someone can probably correct me on this.. but I imagine this is because the onion.to site has a link to the forums somewhere that google has followed and gone through ?

13+ years ago this could be fixed so your website is not indexed.. very odd it can't be done now..........

I guess we should all use user names that aren't that unique and come up with more search results on their own...

This has been talked about many times before.  I came to the conclusion long ago that administration wants the forum indexed by google.  If they didn't, they would simply require you to sign in to view the forum the same way you have to sign in to view the marketplace.  That is the only reason the marketplace isn't indexed too.

The forum could be configured so you need an account to read posts, but what does it matter? Anyone who wants to read the posts can create an account. It's a public forum. Let the Google index be a sharp reminder of that. :)
