Title: Down for maintenance
Post by: Dread Pirate Roberts on April 20, 2013, 01:56 am
UPDATE (1000 UTC): The site is open, but pages are loading very slowly.  We are going to keep the site up while we try to solve this speed problem.

UPDATE (0842 UTC): We're back up.  Thanks for your patience as always.  Happy 420!

UPDATE (0800 UTC): Almost there.  Will update at 0830 UTC if we aren't back up.

UPDATE (0653 UTC): Getting close to being able to reopen.  Should be back up by 0800 UTC unless we run into any last minute snags.

I'm closing the site for a few hours.  A couple of things happened on the backend that I am unsure about and I don't want to take any chances.  No problem has been confirmed, but something just doesn't smell right.  I will publish an update here before 0700 UTC.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

Damn, just as I went to log on to see if I had any messages! Oh well, as usual -- thanks DPR for the updates, they are appreciated. :)

However, can anyone please tell me the significance of the PGP signature? I understand it's a verification thing, but as someone who is still new to using it (I may or may not use it on an affiliated site), how does it prove that it is DPR? Do you use the PGP Key to reproduce the text/message? Sorry, I know this has probably been answered a million, perhaps billion times but I thought I'd ask for myself :)

better safe than sorry- I'll trust DPR on that.

However, I hope this ___ (whatever is going on) doesn't effect deposits made prior. Otherwise, I'm out some btc. I trust SR to take care of this. I think I'll get off the nets now, and look for updates tmrw.

This is some good shit!! ;D

I got quite lucky

my deposit got confirmed probably half an hour before the site went down.
I checked the account, saw the money and proceeded to place an order..
and then i thought "hmmm... maybe wait a lil while...." so i did...
and then impatience got the better of me!
I click my chopping cart and poof..

I land up here....
I assume my money is safe?
i have the blockchain link ready in case shit hits the fan.

I can imagine what i would end up thinking if i had placed an order just a few minutes before maintenance..
I'd be shitting bricks and needles.

People post all sorts of bullshit on here about "Task force showed up, should I be worried?" - DEA called, etc.
Usually noobs.

And we all get on and hypothesize if it's bullshit, or not. (Guilty here myself of getting sucked into it sometimes, out of boredom)

Just ignore that shit. It's all bored kids with no money and no balls to order anything, IMHO. Either that or some low-brow LEO flunkie, just fucking with your heads.

Come on here, and look up the drug reviews and dealers that are good. All that other shit that comes up when you first logon is just that. SHIT.

I look at the topics on that first screen, and just shake my head now, and laugh it off. Then go to the threads that are serious, and deal in reality.

Unless you like imaginary paranoid stories. Just do treat them as "serious news". It's no more real news than CNN, NBC, ABC, FOX, or BBC for that matter.

This is "down for maintenance" It WAS scheduled. That's why a link to this thread is provided to you when you try to logon.

Those of us that lived through the long week in November, where there was no message on the login screen for days, know when to panic.

This is simply DPR + crew, beefing up security, as the cat and mouse game never ends.

You should thank God, the site is down for maintenance.

What would you babies be saying if we got hit by LE, and everyone's IP was traced, and named in an indictment?

"Why didn't DPR do constant upgrades on the system!" That's what you'd be saying, if you weren't being beaten and interrogated, with no warrant searches and seizures. Especially here in the US, where the dictator in chief signed your rights away on New Years Eve 2011.

Bet you didn't know that?  Under the 2012 NDAA’s Sec. 1021, Pres. Obama agreed to give the military the power to arrest and hold Americans without the writ of habeas corpus.

You should be more worried about that, than a temporary downtime for maintenance.

Go take some drugs, if you actually buy on here. Or go have a drink. Read a book. Each day this site is up and working is a miracle.

A lot of you mainly younger people, say 24 and under (estimate) are becoming known as Generation 'V' for vanity. Your expectations that the lights should never go out, and if you can't get a cell tower, it's a major crisis, really speaks to an unrealistic view of the world, and a huge narcissism issue.

As soon as I saw it was in the Newbie section I was thinking it was odd. On top of all the smart people who were saying tracing the IP is almost impossible through TOR.

Plus why would the DEA waste their timing messaging people through a fucking forum when they have a better chance of catching the person by monitoring their mail for more solid evidence to get them fucked.  Even so, they want the sellers not us.

many times you go after the buyer just tk get to the dealer. getting an ip or whatever is just one piece to the puzzle they need to put the whole picture together. tye first rule of engagment is gathering intelligence.

Hey Klaw, why don't you respond as to why you lied to me in order to get free drugs? Viva la revolution!
I sent you a private message explaining that. a misunderstanding nothing more. my stats  for a year are perfect. ive never claimed a reship or asked for a refund. i value my stats more than i do a chunk of change but i explained it to you in the PM. i hope you respect that and refer from slandering my name as i hage worked hard to keep a solid .honest reputatin

+1 GajillionBillionZillionBabaBooeyillion

Just remembering that long week in November made me week at the knees for a second (it was actually almost 2 weeks for me). Now that...that was real torture!!!

Excuse me...I need to start doing some of the drugs I've hoarded for nights like this...

honestly, i wish DPR would warn everyone about an hour or so before shutting the site down... like send out a mass message or something.  not trying to start shit but some people would like to withdraw coins in case of an emergency
QFT. Good suggestion. Love DPR :)
What if there is a huge flaw in security. If he tells people then someone might try to quickly exploit it. When he see's something is wrong he should immediately deal with it.

Chaos

I'm not saying to tell EXACTLY what's wrong... Just say something like "I have found something of slight concern and I will be shutting the site down for a bit"

Something like that would be great lol

I agree. I think a brief explanation as to vaguely what happened would be good. Something like "we discovered a glitch with this and that. All sorted now."
Without giving away too much information, everyone would be more at peace if we fond out what was happening.

Thanks to DPR + the admins for keeping Silk Road safe, secure and available for sellers & buyers. Silk Road is a huge step up from any other drug site that has been online before and finally allows drug users the freedom of safely buying a wide range of high quality drugs. Hopefully one day, we will see drugs become decriminalised or legalised. We can only hope! Too many people have been punished for a victimless crime and it's about time it stopped!

Some vendors are having special 420 sales, it would be nice to take advantage.

I do echo your sentiment about not whining though, I'd rather wait a day or two to order on a secure SR. People seem to think DPR is being a dick when all he's really trying to do is get us drugs safely and not a prison term.

I say this totally in jest as DPR and his team have done a great job, but does anybody remember that episode of the Simpsons, where the comic book store guy is looking at internet porn? The net is so slow that the pic loads sliver by sliver, starting with the face and moving down her body as he waits in anticipation. The sight feels like that today. We're all waiting to see her tits  ;D

Seems to be a combination of the volume of people who were waiting for SR to come back online, plus it's a Saturday and more people are on the Tor Browser, both on forums, which are slow, and SR itself. I'm just going on for the 1st time in 12 hours, and it's taken me 10 minutes to load a SR page, after hitting 'reload' 5 times.
These bottlenecks sometimes follow an outage. Add to that it's a Saturday, also many exchanges are closed, so it's just the machines doing the work, with maybe a skeleton crew on duty to keep an eye on the servers. This will all iron out. If not by Sunday, definitely by Monday.

I used to work in a telecom environment, and when a glitch happened on a Friday night, there was only so much you could do on a weekend to keep things humming along.  ;)

This too shall pass

I saw another thread saying similar things. Does anyone know if this will have an effect on orders? I'd like to place one, but not if the BTC are going to be floating around the onion somewhere.

On a side note, I was at a local WM where I fund BTC;s frequently....

& I seen two official looking federal officers asking an employee questions in the money center area.

I wasn't depositing but it still sketched me the fuck out, likely x10000 unrelated but you now how paranoid you are when your high!

I hope this issue gets resolved promptly, lets EDIT: not*** toss around rumors.

Unlike our government, our officials in charge here take care of us!

Yeah... I think you might need to cut back on whatever it is you've been taking.

Yes, because seeing federalies standing in the exact spot where you fund your drugs is not unnerving at all :D

Glad this was all resolved.

It's all going to catch up. Your BTC's are always 'floating around the onion somewhere' if you think about it. Until the dust settles, what else are you going to do with your btcs?- Just think, the line is getting longer and longer, and you're deciding whether to get in line or not.

That's just my opinion, I could be wrong. - I say, go for it.

"I seen two official looking federal officers"

What do federal officers look like? Especially "official looking" ones? - I wouldn't know what to look for, and I've been around a long time.

Are you sure it wasn't the armored car courier guys, like Brinks? - They have some pretty snazzy "official looking" uniforms.

If I was still a stoner, I probably would've had the same reaction.

Nowadays? It wouldn't bother me a bit. Paying for a moneygram to buy bitcoins is not a crime. Bitcoins are legal. When you use SR they are untraceable.

Stop being paranoid! Buy some Xanax with your next order. You'll thank me later.

I've noticed in the sellers pages that happens.  But this was way before the maintenance took place as well.  Sometimes refreshing would fix it and sometimes it wouldn't.
Title: Re: Down for maintenance
Post by: DayDreamer on April 21, 2013, 02:11 am
has anyone thought that MAYBE the slow speed is BECAUSE of the holiday + 420 sale + the fact that there was downtime?

People wanna capitalize on the discounts.
Vendors want to process the multitude of orders.
Holiday = people do not have to work=more time to spend at a computer.

I estimate, roughly, conservatively and based on nothing but gut feeling, at least 2 - 3 times the normal volume of traffic.

Take into account that its tor.
