Title: Tormail down?
Post by: Popeye Trading on March 27, 2013, 02:39 am

Assuming so, I'm having the same issue

It says the database is down. This has happened before. Usually the admins become aware of it and fix it within a few hours.

Past performance is not always indicative of future results, but yeah, when this happened before, it came back after a few hours.

Thank god I found this thread. I was freaking out just about to post this,
"I emailed myself four 500$ Moneypaks. I threw away the physical cards knowing they were saved in tormail.
Now for the last day I keep getting this same error,
"ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server."
It won't let me log into tormail!!!! I was supposed to send someone the 2000$ earlier today. Am I fucked?
Someone please I beg you help me."

I really hope tormail is up soon because if not.... Well bad things are going to happen to me.

Same for me thru Squirrel on multiple accounts.
Always nice to find out it is not just me :-)

Luckily this is keeping me from selling Btc, which are continuing their meteoric rise in value atm. Sadly, The Road is lovely, dark, and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep ;-)

SquirrelMail shows Connection dropped by IMAP and RoundCube shows Database error : connection failed.

Hope this gets sorted soon :)

I'm starting to worry
Title: Re: Tormail down?
Post by: astor on March 27, 2013, 02:40 pm
Yeah, still getting Database Error: Connection Failed.

And of course the only way to get a hold of the admins is to... email admin@tormail.org.

No equivalency between the two.  Using a tormail address will raise red flags with all kinds of financial organizations, while buying BTC doesn't. Some banks even handle the cash side of the transaction.  Now, I don't do business with Mt. Gox because I think there are better, more private ways to do business, so if you do, that's your bag to carry.  But, leave tormail for Tor stuff, and clearnet addresses for clearnet stuff, and never the twain should meet.

Title: Re: Tormail down?

It's anonymous and free so maybe we shouldn't crucify them for the down time- Okay fine but I am loosing tons of sales every time it happens so they need to at least acknowledge when it goes down, give an estimate of when it will come back online, explain why it is happening 2-3 times weekly all the sudden, and maybe offer to forward incoming to a different address on a different service in the downtime if possible.

Is there some way to make an email address that is actually multiple addresses hosted by multiple servers?  So someone sends to lets say fakeaddress123@sendingeverywhere.com and it forwards the message to tormail and five other addresses... then if the sendingeverywhere.com server is down it's okay because it went to another called alsosendseverywhere.com which is hosted on totally seperate servers...?? does anything remotely like this exist or has anyone got a viable solution?  I have had three of my providers go down in the past month so it is getting to be a big issue for my clear web businesses.

Yes. It has been down for days and is still down as of 5 minutes ago. I really need it up, too. :'(

If you use Thunderbird, then you should install the TorBirdy extension to increase your security and anonymity. It was created by a Tor developer for that purpose.

I am done with tormail. As with DPR's statement regarding the recent DDOS attack on Silk Road, I'm glad to have experienced this inconvenient disruption of tormail service - it has forced me to strengthen my cryptography and anonymity practices.

Who runs tormail? Unknown. Thus prudence demands that you accept that 100% of emails may be accessible to law enforcement or whatever other worst case scenario entity your mind can come up with.

Why does this mystery party run tormail? Unknown. Thus you cannot assume they are protective of your communication, or respect your privacy.

What is happening with the recent outages? Unknown. Whoever runs tormail isn't keeping us in the loop. This is a major red flag, and unacceptable.

I was hoping to transfer over some bitcoins to SR to make a quick purchase while the site was up. So many obstacles are standing between me and my drugs! Has this issue been going on continuously, or has tormail been turning on and off sporadically?

It'll likely come back for a while before it goes down again.  At one point they had it fully operable for almost a week but sometimes it's only an hour or two.  I imagine one of these times it will not come back to life again at all just as so many other sites in the past.

Anyone getting on Tor Mail yet?  I've never seen it down this long, and my concern is that if I make a bitinstant transaction to Bitcoin Address, and that address is a blockchain wallet, do I need to verify with an email address for the transaction to go through?  On blockchain, it just says "recommended" and not "required", so I would think it wouldn't matter, correct?

Thanks for all replies - SR and SR community rocks!

Title: Re: Tormail down?
Post by: Razorspyne on May 08, 2013, 12:57 pm
Actually it probably could be managed. Just remove it from the main site and restrict membership to Silk Roaders. Or have it open membership if you like. 'silkroad.com' is just an EXAMPLE of a name, could change it to something else a little more subtle to drop the connection here. Only problem is funding. Silk Road mgt are spendthrift beyond belief. They probably wouldn't back it if it meant cost.

At least it's an idea to develop, which is more than some around here do on the forums. TorMail is shot at the knees. (I think astor was gathering forum interest for creating something a little more reliable).

Funnily enough, Tormail is supergood right now. Lightning fast for real!  :) :) :)

But if it gets hit again like it was recently, then a paid service is a good idea if some BTC income will help the admins stop attacks.

Yep. That's what astor was thinking too. He suggested $10 or $20 to stop multiple accounts and provide an incentive to manage it properly. I can't find the link, but I will come back later.
