Title: The main problem with bitcoins......
Post by: The Scientist on March 24, 2013, 08:15 pm
A big problem with bitcoins is they are IP logged but that doesn't necessarily mean they can trace them to a drug transaction online. What are the legalities of the governments (USA+Canada) of becoming dealers on silkroad and simply doing controlled deliveries?

Run your client over Tor.

That problem is easy to fix. To me, the main problem with bitcoin is that only people with computing devices and internet access can use it. I mean, theoretically you could walk around with a paper wallet, and publish transactions by making carrier pigeons deliver pieces of paper with transaction IDs to a physical block chain, chiseled on the side of a mountain,  but that would be impractical.

So over half the world's population is excluded from using this freedom-promoting technology.

Hey this makes a lot of sense. Very good, valid point.

Where do you see the price of bitcoin going from here in the short term (2 weeks) and in the long term (2 yrs)?

If I knew that, I would be rich. :)

I think it will continue to rise, at least above $100, but as to how high and how fast it will get there, I have no idea.

Wait what? Bitcoin was invented to provide as close to the same level of freedom and anonymity online as one would have using cash for transactions in real life. In the same way it would be hard to trace a particular $20 bill found in a drug dealer's pocket back to you, Bitcoin was meant to be similarly anonymous. Why would people with no access to the internet need a digital currency? What would they spend it on? If they are doing something illegal they could just pay with cash...

Bitcoins are the future!  ;D

Once apps get written for phones and the fiat currencies collapse everyone's going to go over to Bitcoins as the only true global currency it is that will never be able to be fraudulently artificially inflated.  ;)

Anyone with any sense who has seen them rise the way they have would recognise them for what they are, the future of global currency and would be buying as many as they could now before they explode like a Satoshi Bomb!  :o

This is Japans revenge for the US using weapons of mass genocide against them in WW2!  :P

I remember when I came on it was after the bitcoin had fell like falling ice of sky crappers. I can't believe they were a couple a bucks not so long ago. I remember at the time I saw the biggest wallets with btc and wondered hmmm are they waiting for something? Shit... They sure where. They are indeed the way of the future honestly. The future also has gadgets all over the place. I have 3 laptops a home pc, and a couple of phones. My coins are just a couple clicks away.

Pretty amazing really. I wish I would have bought way more coin.

But I also know I can go broke over night which is what keeps my decisions educated and calculated.

The reason the coins dropped a couple years back so much is MTGox was hacked and coins were stolen enmasse.
There was another high-profile wallet theft last year.
These depressed the price the most, as the bitcoin speculators largely gave up.
The rest was a lack of confidence.
There will only be so many bitcoins mined, and they are currently mining with half the rewards they got before - AND the difficulty is constantly increasing.
So they can only really go up in the long term.

The other thing, is that the exchange is VERY fluid, so if one of our major vendors or DPR were to cash out and set their bitcoin prices cheap, it would depress the price of bitcoins across the board.
The sellers of coins have the price in their hands, if they want them to be something, they have to cash them out knowing they need to set a firm price, not much lower than the average, and can't dump them all at once.

Small amounts won't make a huge difference, but the folks with big stashes can really mess with it all.
If you're a buyer of coins, buy and spend as fast as you can to minimize risks of it going down.

I have this exact argument with myself every time I see the price dip. If it actually crashes, I may buy several to set aside as a sort of growth fund. But I have to resist the urge to buy before the real crash happens, if it ever does...

Im in the same boat you are christy

I remember when I started vending on SR it was like $4 a bitcoin and I was just looking for any way to cash them out. Now when I look at some of my wallets that I moved coins through and add them all up, I  :'(

But really its no biggie. There was no way for us to predict what was going to happen. I definitely wasnt expecting $70 a coin so soon.

Now I have a set amount of bitcoins that I have been holding onto for a while and hopefully get to cash out when bitcoins reach $1000 and $10k a bitcoin.

One can only dream
