Title: How often does this happen to you?
Post by: blster666 on March 14, 2013, 10:44 pm
You pay for a domestic order from a reputable vendor only to have your package sit at the sorting facility for many days. I am very concerned for my safety right now.

How do I prepare for the worst?

Clean house.

If your shit isn't encrypted, DBAN it.

Deny any knowledge of the package and refuse to answer any other questions.

Is that even believable when it has your name it?

DBAN it? Please elaborate

Lol, if I have your name and address I can mail you anything I'd like. Anyone can. I could mail you a box of girlscout cookies or a pound of pot if I wanted to and had the information.

DBAN is a version of linux I believe. Hes either saying to scramble and then delete your information, or just virtual box it. Search under the security forum for "virtual box" and there are step by step guides.

If your name is on it, that's harder to deal with, but you can still maintain plausible deniability. Don't take any positive action suggesting you know about the package. Don't call and ask about it. If someone shows up at your door to deliver the package, refuse it and say you didn't order anything. For something small, they are not going to leave it in your mailbox and wait for you to pick it up (for all they know, that could take days).

DBAN is here: http://dban.org/

Keep in mind that it will completely overwrite your hard drive and you need to reinstall an OS.

You may not want to do that, and you don't have to do that, but individual file erasure is unsafe.

I hear USPS Priority no. Which is all I use to ship. I also heard USPS First Class letters are the same. Cannot be searched/opened without a warrant.

^^^^^this. Plausible deniability is your friend, sometimes your ONLY friend.

ALSO, if I may add, have a cheapy laptop that you only use to buy/sell. Have your PGP setup on it. If shit gets weird leave it somewhere else for a spell till things cool down. I have my main expensive computer setup at home that I never use to get on here (or for anything else illegal). I have a $100 laptop that I use for the other shit. I didn't want to worry about encrypting my big boy and all that. Just an idea........

Hehe, Same here. Before I made my very first purchase I sat down and thought about this really hard as I can get somewhat paranoid leaving any traces behind. I am using an old laptop to make purchases and never use my wireless either. I do however use my primary PC to just roam these forums but that is about it.

To make myself feel better. I completely wiped my laptop's hard drive clean last night. It took almost 8 hours to do it. Used something bank's use to wipe their hdd's.

On the other note, I need to know something so I hope you guy can tell me what you think about this;

The vendor claims he figured out a new way to do priority/tracking on his home page. Now, when I tracked the package again last night (still sitting in the same place) it says that the postage was conducted electronically "Electronic Shipping Info Received". I then told myself wait a min, I see this when I purchase labels via ebay for customers and when I check to see if they received their order.
Why would a vendor have an account with USPS to ship stuff?
What if he used Tor to do this which would ring an alarm. Wouldn't that be like shooting yourself in the foot?

All my previous packages were hand written and done manually. Why would this vendor send out my info via clear-net to USPS electronically?
I am not sure, but it may be allowed so what do you guys think?

I appreciate the input from everyone so far.

... of course it is. You don't have ANY say over who is allowed to send you mail. If you could be held responsible for the contents of mail bearing your name, anyone's enemies could just mail leaky bags of cocaine to them on purpose to get them raided or arrested. Duh.
