Nah. I don't think they are hoping to get us to go to their site, sounds like they are going to sleep every night thinking of hurting us. It's more of a personal thing. I always wonder isthereanyneed for it....

One person unfortunately bought off their site and was scammed, so yeah, they're that too. I've always wondered, how hard is it to be a spambuster? Can anyone do it or does it have to be someone who is a die-hard techie? Out of sheer curiosity....

Yeah it looks like the 50 post limit hasn't deterred them (guessing its the same person).  It only has caused spamming by real members in that forum.

I am guessing SR needs better capcha (could be manual though), maybe mods or a voting system to hide the posts/threads?

I agree.

It was a bit strange seeing your thread just seconds after this one I was thinking 'hmmm I'm sure I used capital letters and it was scamming spammers not spamming scammers WTF!? lol lol

They must still catch fish though because they still do it I suppose if you have money to burn and you let excitement get the better of you theres a chance these things could work.

Damn Nigerians.

I have a feeling the spammers are more based in slowing the communication between forum members than profit from retards buying bitcoins for 1/3 the value of the coin.

Maybe a tad harsh calling young inexperienced and most of all very excited new users retards but yeah I get that maybe the spammers are LE trying to mess things up maybe they are from another site? All I do know is I wish they would FUCK RIGHT OFF!

You should have seen what it looked like a month ago. 80% of all the threads you could see were spam. Tessellated is currently running a dedicated attack, keeping them down - You should see the thread, its pretty awesome:

Yeah its very irritating, i can't believe people actually bought off of their site. How much do people go on about not trusting anyone and making sure you use TSR safely, then go on to buy under priced BTC from a vendor spamming an entire board? Seems pretty stupid to me.
They're back up on the newbies board now.

Too bad the only staff member admin or mods that would have gone thru the membership banned all the plus 50 post spammer accounts is now no longer a mod.
This would have solved the spammer in the main forum issue. The newbie section is very well serving it's purpose to bottleneck spammers.
Just another example of knowing when to hold them and knowing when to fold them gone wrong.

Not really. I doubt a lot of people would fall for something this lame. It has SCAM written all over it. And someone from this site was scammed of money so yes, they're not here to trade but be a pest.

@ Scampony, yeah I would agree with that statement 100% (just didn't want to bring it up :-X ). And yes, lol, you have a special, sympathetic hug waiting for you in your inbox. Piece out Scampony (and the rest). xo

[Edit. Sorry, I meant the other quote. About spam-busting.]

If you come on this forum not a clue about btc or scams or anything to do with road and you see one of those spams just the one like there is now not a full board it would be fairly easy to get a little excited and maybe fall for this scam I think ages around 17-21 would fall for it the most that said maybe not but its a pain in the arse either way just fucks up the flow of the forums.

Any one know where their from UK/US/EU, I bet their Nigerian it has their stamp!

There are solution to rule out the scammers completely.

On bitcointalk, org what is a site special for bitcoins, you will not find a spam scammer , never!

So There is a solution and it puzzles me why the same solutions are not implemented here.

Maybe if we stop rewarding just removing those post with bitcoins, maybe that would help.

Now the mods are making money from those spam scammers.
When there is no profit to be made anymore, maybe then will this forom just as free of spam as bitcointalk.org.

Excuse me?  This is one of the most ridiculous things I've seen.  I guarantee you NONE OF US are making a CENT here.  All of us mods are here as volunteers & do not get paid -- nor do we "make money" from the spammers.  How would that work?!

I, for one, spend 18+ hours EVERY DAY here trying to keep the spam off of the forums so no one gets scammed.  EIGHTEEN HOURS during which time I make ZERO money.  I imagine the other mods spend just as much time here as I do, and none of them make money here either.

The only time we would make money is if someone donated to our funds - and so far, no one has.  SO, no, NO ONE HERE IS MAKING MONEY FROM THOSE "SPAM SCAMMERS".

Nice karma you have there wasta. (and sig.... ::) ) Mods making money from scammers...... ??? And you have that on good authority? If you knew what you were talking about you would have known they are unpaid....... but you DON'T know what you are talking about, so why are you still here?

[Edit. It pains me to edit this post, it really does. The fact that I should be worried about my good reputation on Silk Road being sullied by trolling. I won't do it. I'm not going to get into an argument and start flinging at you, and vice versa, until it fills a whole page. But..... why is everyone here so eager to be a dick? Is it national dick week? You newbs have been flinging the finger at everyone (well, a lot anyway) and talking shit like usual and, to be frank, Raz is starting to get bored. Why bother coming here? If someone has got something to say, know what ypu're actually saying or you'll come off like a dick. Friendly advice. And if you can get offended by that, I'm not trying hard enough, or you're too sensitive.

BlarghRawr Translation Services would like to provide a translation of the above message.

Translating "pissed off moderator" into "regular people";

"We work our asses off to protect you guys from the spam. We can't do anything but delete it because of the nature in which tor and hiddenservices operate. As far as the forum knows, every piece of spam comes from the same IP address (127.0.0.1). The only way we could reliably block the spam permanently is to block that IP address. That would lock everyone out of the forums. We spend our time, knowing that we aren't being paid for our services, working to keep the spam removed just so that no one, new or old, will suffer from the scam. The fact that you think we are making money from that pile of shit upsets me greatly."

And a Blargh personal note to add in with the translation is this... You guys are being ungrateful pricks to the mods. They really do work their asses off just to keep this place cleaner then it would be.

Edit: "You guys" means people like wasta, just for clarification.

Thanks for translating for me, BlarghRawr.  I'm glad you recognized my current language.  Calmed down now and am back to speaking "regular people" rather than "pissed off moderator".  :)

TL;DR:  we work hard here to prevent people from getting scammed, and we absolutely do not make money off of the spam/scams.  BlarghRawr Translation Services provided a very accurate translation of what I was trying to express.

(best translation service on the forum!)  ;)

I have seen quite a lot of time that btc's were given for just removing spam.
So given by other forum members...That's how it works.

!8 hours each day?
Why not spend 2 hours to figure out how bitcointalk managed to keep te spam scammers from their forum?
This is the fift time I asked this question but You mods never seem to want to answer.

The 50 post for newbee's was the first try from your side.
Keep on trying.
But I will not slip over one single btc for removing spam, because they put a other spam quicker then uou guy's can remove them.

You don't have to do anything about the symphtoms ,but you should do something about the cause.

Ever since bitcointalk have closed their site for spam. It is impossible to post scam spam over there.
Ever since they have done something about the cause this site of Silkroad received the bitcoin scam spam.

If this is the most ridiculous thing you have ever heart, then keep on spending your hours about the symptoms and keep the source cause untouched.
Don't do what bitcointalk.org did, because then we have no more bitcoin scam spam anymore.
And you would miss the occasionally btc that is slipped over every now and then.

Not that you mods are stupid, but let's say that they at bitcointalk.org are just a little bit more smart then you guys
Wouldn't you agree?

I guess not....

Good sir, you should read my translation. It will help you understand why your suggestions are worthless. For example, Bitcointalk can IP-ban the spammers and if the spammer ever uses tor to make accounts and spam, bitcointalk can ban ALL tor exitnodes. Forums operating as a hiddenservice can not.

Your advice is worthless. Learn about the technology you're referring to before you tell someone how to do their job.

We can't do anything but delete it because of the nature in which tor and hiddenservices operate. As far as the forum knows, every piece of spam comes from the same IP address (127.0.0.1). The only way we could reliably block the spam permanently is to block that IP address.

That is the lazy clearnet idea that IP bans are the only way to block jerks.

As I've pointed out numerous times, effective moderation can be accomplished through a combination of privilege and work factor systems.

The Newbie board is an example of a privilege system, where you need to build a reputation to earn certain privileges. Unfortunately, it was done hastily and incompletely. You can spam your way to 50 posts in under an hour. A better system would incorporate time requirements, such as 10 minutes between posts and/or 10 logged in hours on the forum and/or account promotion after 7 days. An even better system would take advantage of the existing Karma feature that currently has no purpose other than vanity.

A work factor makes certain actions like posting or account creation more difficult. The captchas are an example of a work factor, but they are clearly not enough. On clearnet you can slow account creation by requiring an email address. Even better, require a Gmail address which turns the problem of mass account creation over to the skilled spam fighters at Google. We don't have that luxury since we need anonymity, but there are ways to add work factors to account creation here too (eg, decryption of a PGP encrypted code).

The point is that there are all kinds of things the admins could do to work smarter rather than making their mods work harder.

Captcha up to 100, Newbie-forum only up to 50, only 5 posts per day for the first week after the account is made?

The problem is, though... the more they make life hard for the spammer, the harder it is for the legitimate users too. It's like piracy and DRM. You're only fucking over the good guys. The bad guys either don't suffer from it(piracy) or don't care(SRF).

That is the unfortunate trade off.

I should add that the forum has been remarkably spam free lately so the combination of *some* privilege/work factor barriers and hard work by the mods is an effective solution right now.

I allready thought that you guys think that they at bitcointalk can stop the spam because of the abillity to block IP-adresses.

I know you ""think"" that, but know too that you you not know for sure.

Just thinking is not enough.
Their ability to block spam has nothing to do with ip addresses.

It's sad you don't take the time to find out and do some research.

Then you know so and don't have to "think so"" anymore....

Or not? Blarghrawr

You have not asked for btc but made a tread just the same

APPRECIATE OUR MODS? SLIP ON OVER TO SR and SEND 'EM A COIN

Never received a coin? Bad luck I've seen enough going your way.
Even Pine who did herself enough did even slip 1 btc over for removing a few threads.

I guess you want to stop , or at least want me to stop and save the last word for yourself.
Some want always the last word.
But I think too that enough time is wasted here.
But don't deny.

Or put your money where your mouth is and slip me over evry coin I know to find that you guys hace received.
Oh, the admins became the money while you mods did the work....yeah, I know one when I see one.

Thing is the exclusion of spam can be done in more then one way.
No point to mention a few, they are not going to be implemented anyway.
So I will not waste my time.
That's your hobby, so it seems by removing and removing and removing.

There is a answer (like at bitcointalk) but I don't care if you don't want to take measurements.
But it is not my time of fun.

I could paste a lot of idea's, but I have better things to do with my time.

But I know I mentioned;

It's easy to make it impossible to post the same post twice etc.

I have asked to often why this is still allowed.
Don't allow certain words that the scammer is using like the word bitcoin , with or without the combination with other words that keep coming back.
As I have given a lot more solutions.
Never a answer...

If I gave you the solution on a silver platter you rather spend your time deleting spam.
Everybody their hobby, but it's not my kind of a good time...

And about DPR, I have sugested some solutions agains spam to her too. She said nothing having to do with this forum, I should turn to the admins or mods , she is busy with the mainsite...
But if the mods and admins don't listen, There will be scamming spam till the end of days.

Blocking IP addresses is the quickest and easier solution, one that they have available which we do not. That is, without fail, part of how they have conquered the problem. By not having that tool available, SRF is operating from a weaker position as it fights against all the spam.

But I shouldn't be debating with you, since you clearly can't think through things well enough to see that. I'm wasting my time and bumping a retarded thread.

Ugh.  Look, as I've stated, neither I nor the other mod - samesamebutdifferent - have made a CENT off of deleting the spam.  No one here has "slipped over" a btc for it.  We do not encourage or ask for btcs to be given for the spam deletion.

You also seem not to realize this, but it is the admins who make the changes / rules here -- NOT THE MODS.

Which current moderator have you seen asking for money to delete the spam?  The only moderator that anyone has given btc to here is nomad, and he is no longer a moderator.  Even then, I never recall seeing him ask for btc in return for deleting the spam.

These are such ridiculous accusations.

So then you're calling us moderators not as smart as the mods at bitcointalk.org?  Why?  Moderators on this forum are not in charge of implementing new rules or updating the forum or setting restrictions.

I (and many others, I'm sure) have suggested directly to DPR that the spam prevention could be done much better with a simple restriction on how many posts a new member can make within a certain amount of time.  Beyond suggesting it to DPR, there is nothing more we can do.  He is the one who has to make the decision and implement those changes.  Not moderators -- DPR himself.

I'd offer my translation services again, but all I'm getting out of the above is "I'm tired of this bullshit argument".

Yeah, it's more like "This guy doesn't know what he's talking about and I'm no longer quite sure why any of us are wasting our time trying to explain.  If any of us made btc off of deleting spam, we'd be millionaires!"
