Call me slow, but I figured this out just now. I think TOR uses onion sites, because onions have layers. TOR sites have layer upon layer of security, and I think that is why they use onions symbolically.
That is just so neat to me. I don't know why :p

TOR itself is an abbreviation for The Onion Router. And yes that's why it's called that way!

Does anyone here use any of the other tech out there for darknets? I think I2P is one, freenet? I did try I2P a long time ago but it seems most is in TOR. I did see a TOR to I2P gateway somewhere but never looked into it.

It's simple:
Tor is like Ogres because Ogres are like onions.
Ogres have layers. You get it? ;)
omg. Shrek is TOR wooooooooot!!!!!!
-
But... Cakes have layers too; and everyone loves cake ^^
What can't it be called The Cake Network... Nah...
-
You are correct. Tor uses an onion as a symbol, because onions have layers. Tor has layers of cryptography protecting the users and admins.

Now it is actually called Tor and it is not an abbreviation for The Onion Router. The Tor developers don't even consider Tor to be an onion router anymore, now they call it a leek router.

I always though it was onion because of its sweet taste and colorful nature?
