Title: Confused about clearnet warnings
Post by: nopuke on January 05, 2013, 08:44 pm
Why are clearnet links usually posted on the SR forum with a warning? The way I understand it, it's bad to do anything that could identify you using Tor, like checking email, tracking a package, etc. Is there any danger in simply looking at a clearnet site using Tor while logged into SR? I thought that's what Tor is meant for.

Also is there any danger in, say, running Tor with SR open, and simultaneously checking your email with another browser like Firefox?

Thanks.

It's a reminder to never access a clearnet site linked from here over a regular internet connection (only over Tor), and be careful about running JavaScript.

I could set up a web site and link to it, then check the server logs for IP addresses. Now if LE did that, they could get user info from the ISPs.

So when someone posts a clearnet link, I should only view it with Tor?

What should I know about Javascript?

Of course you should only view it over Tor!

As for JavaScript, there's a tiny chance the linked web site could be hosting malicious JavaScript, so if you're paranoid, you can enable NoScript, the S icon in the toolbar -> Forbid scripts globally, but be aware that will break functionality on a lot of sites.
