I don't know how the whole +/- karma thing works. Can someone explain it to me?

Only users with 100+ posts can give +/- karma.
Users can give karma based on the overall quality of your post, but it doesn't prevent someone from giving negative karma just because they don't like what you have to say.

When you get 100 posts, two links will appear below people's names, to Thank or Discourage them. When you thank them, that adds +1 karma. When you discourage them, that subtracts -1 karma.
It's all fake internet points. Doesn't effect anything other than potentially your reputation on the forum, and it's not linked to your SR account. To get more karma, make valuable contributions to the forum.
