Title: bloody hell the bitcoin spams are back again
Post by: geeza23 on December 27, 2012, 10:43 am
Seems like a period after the image verification was put in place the spam about bitcoins were lessened, and now its back up as if the whole process doesn't exist at all? it's pretty damn annoying having to scroll through multiple pages of "Official BTC Shop 10 bitcoin=$89.44 www.bitcointalks.com 1 bitcoin=$11.99 5 bitc New", I'm not really complaining, just pointing it out and maybe it's time again for another brainstorm of effective ways to curb it?

There are lots of effective ways to fix it, policy wise. Admins could rate limit accounts with fewer than 100 posts to one new thread every hour. Admins could create a Newbie section where accounts with fewer than 100 posts (or some amount of time on the forum) could exclusively post. That's how bitcointalk.org does it.

Our problem is that nobody is watching the asylum and nobody cares. It took forever just to get the captchas.

It does seem to be low on the priorities list of SR staff to rectify the problem. As astor points out, there are ways of minimizing the spam here on the forum. The problem is not how to do it, the problem is no one will do it.

yeah fair enough then I guess as astor pointed out the captcha took forever to implement guess it would be good though to get periodic updates from mods / DPR as to which direction they'll be steering the site to

you would think they would give up by now, surely no one would fall for the scam now.

And yet they do. The scam is still successful. You don't antagonize a hornets nest unless you are getting a LOT of something really wonderful... SR is a hornets nest, everyone has come out to play. So they either come with a very big shield or they take the risk for a very big reward, that's how it tumbles.

As I've stated several times, there are no mods currently. As far as DPR goes, why should they care? The main site keeps them busy raking in the cash, and there appears to be little upside (from their point of view) in riding herd on the Forums (or even allowing others to do so.)  The only part of the Forum that they show even the slightest interest in is the Book Club.  Aside from that, I suspect that they could care less if the rest of it fell off a cliff.

What's up with there being no forum moderators? What the fuck?

I made a thread in the Forum Requests with respect to the "Official BTC shop" threads: http://dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/index.php?topic=96763.0

I doubt anyone will give a shit.

I doubt anyone will give a shit.

DPR booted the last of the moderators about 3 weeks ago, without any explanation. I remember one of the mods (I'm not sure which one now) stated that they spent upwards of 10 hours a day on the site, deleting spam and looking after things. Guru described his abrupt dismissal as a slap in the face, and were I in their shoes, I'd probably take it the same way. Some of the mods put in very long hours here, and they were treated very shabbily.

In the thread titled "What happened to the Mods?"  there was considerable speculation as to what happened to the mods.  One of the Admins, Inigo, chastised those participating in that thread, stating that the Admins were "very busy" and didn't have the time to inform people as to what happened to the mods. They exhorted everyone to "be patient" -- doubtless in the fullness of time we would be informed as to what transpired.

I made the point that, there seemed to be no shortage of time for both DPR and the Admins to post in DPR's Book Club threads; indeed, there appeared to be endless time to debate the Libertarian equivalent of  the Medieval theological argument: "How many Angels can dance on the head of a pin?" as well as other minutiae of Libertarian thought.

It is now almost 3 full weeks since the last of the mods were booted, and we're still waiting for an explanation -- I suspect we'll all be dead of old age before we get one.

The mods aren't gone, or at least nomad isn't. He isn't listed with blue-boxes anymore but he has altered posts and locked threads. The mods just aren't quite as public anymore, that's all. :) (And that is a good thing.)
