Title: Like I said, captchas don't stop spamming! Here is my unsolicited PM!
Post by: Party Girl on November 30, 2012, 02:03 am
Apparently you can PM from the minute you sign up.  Look what this asshole sent me!  PM setting should be set to 25-50 posts as I stated captchas should.  These are basic SMF setting and if you require assistance, just contact me.   Here is my unsolicited PM:    >:(

Eh, it's not perfect but it's about 20fold better.

If you're so bothered by clicking the delete button you can change your settings to not appear online when you're logged in. That should stop any messages from spammers.

Of course it is an improvement.  Also, I am not "bothered" by clicking the delete button.  If you have not worked with SMF, you have no idea of it's potential.  It takes about a few minutes and presto, no PM'ing until your 100 post either if we are going to set these parameters.

PG.

Just go to setting and make it so it always shows you as offline. I do agree with you on all of this, but it's going to be a process. They aren't just going to implement stuff right away. They are probably testing to see what works and what doesn't.

Look he's bumping the thread for you, what a sweetheart.

When you look at the list of people who get mass PMed, it's obvious that he copy-pastes the list of online people at the bottom of the main page. Setting yourself as always offline completely fixes the problem.

Damn him, Navar42!  If properly configured, he could not even PM me let alone continue posting at this rate.  Thanks for the laugh and they will end you spammers soon enough.  The only reason they probably used captchas is they were the easiest/ quickest to install.   I see no reason limiting protection to captchas considering the extensibility of SMF.  But that is just me...

I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to implement, but it also prevents new users from sending PM's too, and sometimes it's just useful to have. Maybe make it so you can't mass PM people or send out more than 1 message every 5 minutes?

I would have done that but then my friends won't know when I am online.  Argh.  But in the end, I have no doubt SR will end this crap.

Now I think I might order his ridiculous offer using PP.  Then refute the charge, close his PP accounts and hopefully get the coins for FREE!  What could go wrong as PP will back me I imagine.  Next I could ruin his CC processor for another laugh.    Am I missing anyway for him to stop me?

lmao

Most boards place restrictions on how many posts you need to PM another members just so this cannot be done.  I am certain you can limit new users to X amount of posts per day or within a certain time period?  SMF can do almost anything if you work with it enough.

Hey LE, if you're reading the forum, why don't you shut that asshole down, since he's obviously scamming people and can be linked directly through his PayPal account. Make yourself fucking useful while you're here.

Outstanding, PrincessHIGH!  I will take you up on this as soon as you are ready.  For the meanwhile, I have chosen to remove myself from showing up as online.  I will make this ass work harder to PM me.   >:(

The issue is not whether is will improve things as much as how there are better ways and 100 post is obscene to remove them.  I agree, anything is better than nothing for the present!  However, do you really think a large % of scammers is going to fill out at least 25 or 50 manually captchas just to be banned within hours?  I don't.  They will move on.

SMF is so extensible a total captcha environment is not really necessary if you configure the forum correctly.  That is my only point and hopefully this was just a stop-gap measure.  :)

I wonder why they just don't allow vendors to be moved into a separate group which would preclude the need for 100 posts?  We did pay a decent vendor fee + commissions and this would be a nice time saver for vendors.

CAPTCHAs are actually making a positive difference, there is visibly a lot less spam on the forums now

He hasn't PM'd me yet. I notice he's targeting the oldtimers like you. I'm too young and unimportant to be harassed on PM. Have you told DPR or admin? I've noticed plenty of discussion on this parasite (it's not me btw) but there should be a way to complain. I have no idea why the problem is still like this.

Good luck with it. He's a real jerk (spammer not DKR). Unlimited love and all that crap to you. Piece out. Drive safely. Remember to eat something.

(Speaking of PMing people, still no word pine. I thought of sending a PM but didn't want to push my luck.)
