New to Bitcoin and the like - how exactly does one go about using it? I simply transfer money from my bank to a firm, and they exhange it for Bitcoins which I can then send to the address here on Silk Road?
What's the best service to use?
Thanks in advance ;)

Pretty much, although you'll want to either buy the bitcoins anonymously (with fake info) or send them through a mixing-anonymising service.
How to buy them depends on where you live. Bitinstant is one of the more popular methods. You can do a cash deposit at 700K locations around the world and have Bitinstant exchange it for coins which it sends to an address of your choosing.
A lot of people create Instawallet addresses by simply visiting instawallet.org. SAVE the link because it is the only way to access your wallet. Copy down the bitcoin address it gives you, and tell Bitinstant to send the coins to that address. From there you can send the coins to your SR address, or for added security, send them through a mixer like Bitcoin Fog first and then to your SR address.

I just set a wallet up at https://blockchain.info and paid at CVS with cash via MoneyGram and the BTC's get deposited into the account shortly after, the same-day.
When you're logged into to your blockchain.info wallet you click 'cash deposit' and an embedded BitInstant prompt will pop up where you designate how much you want to pay and then bring cash to a Wal-Mart, 7-11, Albertsons, CVS and pay for the transaction.
All of the account info/btc address info is sent through with the payment, so after you send the moneygram you basically just wait for the BTC's to appear in your account.
During payment, there is an option to pay for the coins anonymously. I checked this option and ran into a slight hiccup, which was quickly resolved.

Anyway, I found rolling with blockchain.info pretty easy-peasy.
Just get an InstaWallet or a blockchain.info wallet and go with Bitcopia.
Also, not sure if this is a good one haven't heard anyone talking about it, but https://bitme.com looks pretty nice, real slick/minimal web interface for making transactions and it's insanely simple.
Another option is http://bitcoin-otc.com but that might be a little too next-level, something like Bitcopia or Bitme keeps the process fool-proof and incredibly easy to understand/follow.
So, check out these sites:
