Yes, that's your public key. Most likely the vendor messed up. Tell him that the message he sent you was encrypted to the wrong public key and remind him what your key ID is.

It means they encrypted it to the wrong public key. Is the key ID that you omitted from the error message different from your key ID? I bet it is.

sprinkles147, if you're that lost, you should do a lot of reading on the forum for a few weeks before you move forward with a purchase.

Here's an easy guide to PGP: http://32yehzkk7jflf6r2.onion/gpg4usb/

As for bitcoins, that can be trickier to figure out, depending on where you live. I suggest searching and reading all the bitcoin related threads you can find on the forum.

gpg: Signature made Wed 02 Jan 2013 [REDACTED TIMEZONE] using RSA key ID 69943BCF
gpg: Good signature from "burner <burner@burner.org>"

Verified! God job.

And that means you're the first newb to make it to Level 4. :)

At least GPG4usb actually works. GPA has many glitches, and I can't even get the basic things to work properly. The Youtube video uploader had trouble with it as well.

Yep, that's why we recommend GPG4USB.

gpg: encrypted with 4096-bit RSA key, ID 3A6E863D, created 2013-01-02
      "burner <burner@burner.org>"
gpg: decryption failed: secret key not available

What you posted is a message encrypted to yourself. You should be able to decrypt it, but you can't verify the signature because there is none.

You need to use the Sign option, not Encrypt.

2556
There's nothing to decrypt. A signature is used to sign plaintext. DPR will do that with his public announcements. You CAN sign a message and then encrypt it, but in this case, I signed the plaintext "burner, can you verify this signature".

So yes, you know how to verify a signature. :)

Now type a message into GPG4USB, click the Sign button in the toolbar and post the output here. Remember, you're not encrypting the message, so you should still see the plaintext, but it will have a signature after it (a bunch of garbled text), but you need to post the whole thing, including the beginning line with the dashes.

Silk Road discussion / Re: can't login to SR

Refresh the list of relays.

Onion icon -> Network Map -> Refresh

Wait a few minutes.

Build new circuits.

Onion icon -> New Identity

That's usually the most effective thing you can do. You don't have restart TorBrowser or your computer or any of the other crazy stuff people try. The problem is almost always with the Tor network or the SR server. There's nothing you can do on your end, on your computer, to solve that.

It mentions signing briefly at the end.

"Another common procedure is to sign a plaintext message so that others can verify you really wrote it. To do that, write a message and check the box next to your key, then select Sign in the toolbar."

Well, now everybody knows about The Game. :)

For the last few weeks I've been playing this game with people in PGP Club:

Level 1 is decrypting a message.

Level 2 is encrypting a message to me.

Level 3 is verifying a signed message.

Level 4 is signing a message.

Some people don't get it, most do. A few are quite proud of their achievement

http://dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/index.php?topic=30938.msg686197#msg686197

A few got to Level 3. Only one person got to Level 4 and he wasn't a newb, just did for the lulz.

We brainstormed that Level 5 could be verifying a binary signature like for the browser bundle or Tails ISO (useful to know how to do), and there could be other levels.

I'd like to turn the game into a web app on a hidden service that people could play with, but I don't know PHP or JavaScript.

Security / Re: Question About Law and SR
« on: January 02, 2013, 02:14 pm »
Here in the US, would proving that you ordered something be enough to convict you?  In my mind, possession is all that matters, so I would be lead to believe that they would have to physically find you w/ contraband on your person or in your home in order to charge you with anything.

As above, attempting to purchase or receive a controlled substance is illegal. However, when the Farmer's Market was busted, some buyers' names and addresses were recovered and they were sent "stern warnings" from the DOJ (some people in this community got the letters) but as far as I know nobody has been prosecuted outside of the core people behind FM. An address alone isn't evidence of attempting to purchase something, since you could have sent your address to a vendor and never gone through with the purchase. However, the transaction history on SR might be valid evidence of drug purchases. At least items are deleted after 6 weeks, though I think that should be shorter.
