I deleted my posts in that thread because everyone was crying that I was shitting on their parade.

When something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Rocker may be that 1% exception, and I hope that's the case, but I'm highly suspicious of a $5000 drug giveaway, especially when each person wins more than a personal amount.

Like I said, the port you see in the GUI is the ControlPort. You're not supposed to change it. If you followed my instructions, the SocksPort has been changed to 9050.

You say that it's asking for a password. So when you click "Get Mail", does it say "connecting" in the status bar, followed by "connected", and then it asks for you password? If that's case, you are connected, but your username and/or password are wrong.

The server name still says smtp.tormail.org. Like I said,  you need to change it to the onion domain.

Also, are you using the browser bundle to supply your Tor instance? If so, I think I know what's wrong.

The Mac and Linux versions of the browser bundle use a random Socks port other than 9050. You need to force it to use port 9050.

onion icon in system tray -> Settings -> Advanced -> uncheck "Configure control port automatically"

DO NOT change the ControlPort to 9050. Leave it at 9051. The ControlPort is different from the SocksPort.

Restart the browser bundle and the SocksPort will be 9050.

Configure Thunderbird with all the settings exactly as they are written on the TorMail Help instructions,

EXCEPT change Socks4 to Socks5.

Let me know if that worked.

No, you need to use the hidden service domain for the server name, jhiwjjlqpyawmpjx.onion

All that other stuff was right before, I think TorBirdy changed it. You need to change it back.

Change Socks4 to Socks5 and try that.

This key is not safe. 512 bit keys can already be cracked and 1024 bit keys will probably be cracked in the next 5 years. I *strongly* recommend you use a different PGP program, like GPG4USB for Windows (follow the tutorial in my signature) or GPGTools for OS X. Set your key size to 4096 bits and post your new public key.

LOL!  Well I just don't know where you got the date of the d/l being the 7th, but when somebody starts putting conspiracy ideas in my head, I start looking for inconsistencies.  I didn't mean anything by it :)

TBH, I got the 7th from the time stamp on my tarball. Then I went a found the blog post but didn't double check. So you caught me. The conspiracy was my laziness. :)

Yes, there were two updated versions released pretty close together, 2.3.25-1 and then 2.3.25-2.

0.2.3.25-1 came out in early December. I don't think there were two updates recently, like in the last week.

Well goddamn SS if you want to be technical about it. :) Guess it depends on the time zone of their server and your time zone. All the comments are on the 7th though, so it was probably late on the 6th.

The last two updates are:

0.2.3.25-1 -- Dec 3
0.2.3.25-2 -- Jan 7

As confirmed by the Tor Blog (there's always a post when a new version comes out, even for a minor update like this)

Silk Road discussion / Re: How long before SR is busted?
« on: January 08, 2013, 03:56 am »
Running an exit node when you're doing anything illegal is retarded. There was an exit node operator who got raided and one of the people on OVDB knew him. That's all the details I'll give about that. Not a good situation.

Oh, and this guy (who outed himself, so I'm not giving anything away) had a small amount of MJ and hash, but still not a good thing when you're running an exit:

That's odd. Maybe it has something to do with the character encoding or the newline character you're using.

Security / Re: BEST PLACES TO BUY LEGITIMATE BITCOINS
« on: January 08, 2013, 02:16 am »
I have read a plethora of posts on HOW is recommended, however, I have yet to find HOW to contact them. There is no "Buy" section, as someone had posted in one of the threads.

The "Buy" section is the Silk Road marketplace.

Sugar Mama: http://silkroadvb5piz3r.onion/silkroad/user/aace915f06

Or PM the vendors here.
