Security / Re: New Version of TOR - always update?
« on: January 14, 2013, 08:43 pm »
The Tor Project releases a new browser bundle about once a month. It's usually a good idea to update, because they include new versions of Firefox, OpenSSL, and Tor, which provide security fixes at the least, and sometimes new features.

The latest browser bundle update includes a security fix to Firefox which patches a vulnerability where the Turkish government was hijacking HTTPS connections. There are three exit nodes in Turkey, so if you browse non-onion sites over Tor, you should update.

Security / Re: Are bitcoin transactions working on SR or Not?
« on: January 14, 2013, 08:37 pm »
I agree with SS. There have been too many posts about bitcoin problems lately for it to be trolling or FUD. There are probably some issues with SR's accounting.

The nice thing about bitcoins is that you have indisputable, cryptographically secure external proof of your transaction, at least for deposits and withdrawals. Internal transfers between accounts is another matter.

Do you think I will get my money back?

I'm not guaranteeing anything, but the vendors that I mentioned got their coins eventually.

Silk Road discussion / Re: Time to get bitcoin?
« on: January 14, 2013, 06:49 pm »
This is why BTC will never be as good as it should be. People don't like to wait for their money, specially when they can look it up and see it in the chain and it doesn't show up in their account.

This is an issue with SR, not bitcoins per se. As you said, the transaction is already in the block chain. If you transferred the coins to your own bitcoin-qt client, they would show up as soon as the transaction propagated across the network to it, which in my experience takes seconds. Of course, it's convention to wait until 6 confirmations before you can spend the coins.

Security / Re: Liberte SR problems
« on: January 14, 2013, 04:48 pm »
This is really the reason that Linux remains an operating system that only enthusiasts should use, or people who want to buy and sell drugs on Silk Road... :P

It's not fair to compare a specialist distro like Liberte, with a single developer behind it, to Ubuntu, with a 500-employee company and a community of 20 million users behind it. If you have a problem with Ubuntu, there is almost certainly a bug report (or 2 or 3) on Launchpad and a thread (or 2 or 3) on the forum by the time you Google it.

Ubuntu is balls easy compared to Linux 10 years ago. It's easier to install and learn how to use than Windows, it's just that everybody already knows how to use Windows and they're accustomed to the Windows way.

Hey, it's a good time. Tails 0.16 came out yesterday with lots of bug fixes and security improvements.

2272
Which PGP package? GPGTools is supposed to be pretty good. I've never used it as I don't have a Mac, but I've heard good things about it.

2273
I've heard of vendors not receiving BTC. The order from the buyer is there, in their account history, but the BTC don't show up. Probably just a bug.

2274
Coins can take up to four hours to show up.  You could try checking the blockchain for the transaction.

Coins sent between SR accounts exist in a private database operated by SR. There are no transactions or bitcoin addresses to check in the block chain.

Security / Re: Android PGP encryption???
« on: January 14, 2013, 06:20 am »
Not sure what you mean. When you enter your address in the box, that's a private message on SR's server, not an email. It could be intercepted if the server is compromised, that's why you should encrypt your address.

Security / Re: Android PGP encryption???
« on: January 14, 2013, 05:36 am »
Unless you post your name, address or some other identifying information, you can't be traced by not encrypting messages on the forum.

You should definitely encrypt your address when you send it to the vendor on the marketplace.

BTW, you need to format your public key like this, without all the blank lines, or people won't be able to import it (and most likely won't know how to fix it):

Security / Re: Android PGP encryption???
« on: January 14, 2013, 05:09 am »
It would be easier and more convenient for me to do it through an android device than my desktop.

It would also be far less secure.

I want to be as careful and discrete as possible.

This goal is incompatible with your other goal of wanting to use Android.

Orbot is not as well tested as the desktop browser bundle and even the SR admins recommend not using it. Don't use it.

I don't know what PGP programs are available for Android, but judging from all the shitty Windows, Mac, Java programs out there, and the generally lower quality of mobile apps, I wouldn't trust any PGP program for Android.

Don't cut corners. Use a desktop or laptop computer with the standard browser bundle and GPG for Linux, GPG4USB for Windows, or GPGTools for Mac.
