Has the value of bitcoin ever dropped significantly, or does it just keep rising?  Anyone been watching it over the past year or so?

There are several web sites that provide charts. Yes, it went through a huge boom and bust in June 2011 after the first round of major media reports about it, when the baseline market was small and tons of people tested out bitcoins and then abandoned them. It went through another small boom and bust in August of last year, probably because of the pirateat40 scare.

All time: https://blockchain.info/charts/market-price?timespan=all

Last year: https://blockchain.info/charts/market-price?timespan=1year

It could be going through another small boom and bust now, we'll see. However, if you follow the 3 year trend, on average it continues to increase, and at a relatively fast rate. As the market grow, it becomes more stable.

Also,

Yup. For those saying "well I could have made money if I bought it low", well you still can. Because when it doubles in value and hits $30 tomorrow you'll be saying the same thing.

Exactly. It's not like the market for bitcoins is exhausted. Probably only about 500,000 people use them. A year from now it could be 2 million, and 3 years from now it could be 5 million.

IF the price went to $30 in the next month then I'd say it's a bubble and you should sell, but I wouldn't be surprised if bitcoins were stable at $30 a year from now. In short, the price is still low and it's a good time to buy. :)

And secondly, when someone gets banned here on SR, it isn't done accidentlly, & it doesn't take the whole site down!

Actually, there was a mod or admin who did an IP ban (127.0.0.1 of course) one time and locked everyone out of the forum. It was a Saturday night in December as I remember. Facepalm. :)

There isnt a chance of them getting "lost" is there?

If you're looking at the transaction in the block chain, then the coins obviously aren't lost, it's just that nobody has been motivated to confirm the transaction yet.

« on: January 21, 2013, 09:28 pm »
Did the transaction involve many to one or one to many addresses? Large transactions (in bytes, meaning the number of addresses involved, not the amount of coins transferred) will take longer unless you pay a higher fee. The standard fee is .0005 BTC, but if you're consolidating 20 addresses into 1, you should pay more like .0015 BTC or it will take longer. I've seen it take 12 hours to get 6 confirmations without a fee.

Silk Road discussion / Re: What is happening to the BTC / USD rate?
« on: January 21, 2013, 02:20 pm »
The way to make money in bitcoins, like any investment scheme, is to diversify and go longterm. The vast majority of the people who tried various get rich quick schemes (Bitcoinica, GLBSE, Satoshi Dice) are broke. Look at the top 10 bitcoin addresses that have thrown money at Satoshi Dice (listed on the web site), they all lost thousands of coins. Meanwhile, the people who have held onto their coins for 2-3 years are rich now.

Sure, a tiny fraction of people who have bet on Satoshi Dice are up by thousands of coins overall, but that's not a reliable investment scheme. :)

Crack Satoshi Dice? If they pull answers from /dev/urandom, you're not going to crack it.

Yeah, a bunch of buying. Yesterday on bitcointalk.org someone mentioned a $200K buy order that caused the BTC value to jump from $15.70 to over $16, but obviously that's only a part of the increase from $14. If you mess with bitcoins, it's a good idea to read bitcointalk.org regularly, as it contains all the news, gossip, scam reports, etc.

Overall bitcoins are up 60% since August, so if you've been holding onto coins, that patience is paying off. :)

Security / Re: Liberte SR problems
« on: January 21, 2013, 03:27 am »
Theoretically, yes, Practically, no.

If you're paranoid, then announcing that you're going to download Liberte from Sourceforge isn't a good idea. LE could get the server logs. How many people do you think will download Liberte in the next 12 hours? Probably not that many. It puts you on a short list of suspects.

Practically, LE doesn't have the time, resources or interest to go after random people who may or may not be low level drug buyers.

1- does anyone have the link to the Liberte that everyone is speaking of?

http://dee.su/liberte

2-should it be downloaded through TOR broswer?

You can, but it's over 200 MB, so it might take a while and the connection might die.

3- Do I access Liberte then tor or tor then liberte after its installed? I tried reading the 18 page review in Liberte and using SR anonymously but im not sure why we have to use both. Can anyone help with this?

Liberte is an operating system and Tor is an application that runs on it. So first you boot Liberte, then you use Tor to access SR.
