Security / Re: Is visiting onion sites anonymous?
« on: April 13, 2013, 09:21 pm »
But what about a hidden services sites like Silk Road or Tormail? Does my ISP or LEO know what hidden service website I'm visiting? What are the potential anonymity pitfalls in visiting onion sites. (assuming of course you don't divulge personal information).

No. The connection is encrypted and bounces around 7 relays before it gets to the hidden service. Nobody knows what site you are visiting.

There are potential timing and fingerprinting attacks that could allow someone to determine you are visiting a particular hidden service (with some level of confidence), but none of these attacks have been seen in the wild.

Security / Re: Using hotmail or yahoo mail on TOR - traceable?
« on: April 13, 2013, 09:17 pm »
For some reason, people think that hidden services are safer than clearnet sites. Hidden services are designed to protect the server. As a Tor user, you have the same level of anonymity, whether you are browsing a hidden service or a clearnet site. There are a few advantages to hidden services, such as LE doesn't know where they are located or who to subpoena. Using a hidden service can protect you against accidentally connecting to a site in a way that reveals your IP (for example, configuring an IRC client to use a hidden service is safer, because if you turn off the proxy settings it will fail instead of connecting you to the IRC server with your real IP address). However, in general, you have the same amount of anonymity with clearnet site as with a hidden service -- there are three proxies between you and the IP address the server sees.

So the short answer is, if you use Tor correctly (TorBrowser in the default configuration), your real IP won't be leaked to Hotmail.

However, there are lots of things you can do to accidentally deanonymize yourself, even when Tor works as intended.

Read this article about how the FBI found a guy who was using Tor because he revealed 4 or 5 pieces of information about himself:

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2012/03/stakeout-how-the-fbi-tracked-and-busted-a-chicago-anon/

So don't reveal personal info.

"We use technology "The Pirate Bay" for your safety"

What the fuck does that mean? Is the site a torrent?

Right now, BTC is trading at $107 and the SR price is almost exactly the same, because it has been higher for the last few hours, around $115, but between 20-24 hours ago, it was much lower. Wait 4 hours and the SR average should go up, and if the current price is still around $107, you will get more than what you paid for your BTC (if you bought them right now).

And as I predicted, SR weighted average has gone up from $106 to $109, while BTC is once again diving because the MtGox lag is 47 minutes (they haven't fixed shit). You can buy BTC right now for $95, so if you buy now and spend immediately, you will be getting about 15% more value then what you pay.

Well i'm 60+ yrs. old

Did you go to Woodstock? I bet you traveled around on Ken Kesey's bus and gave people the electric kool-aid acid test.

so I assume as a buyer we always pay more than the actual price if we purchase as soon as we buy the coins

Only when the price is going up. When it was crashing a few days ago, you could buy BTC for $120 but the weighted average on SR was like $180.

Funny you should mention the CIA, because we have it on pretty good authority (google In-Q-Tel) that the CIA think Bitcoin is awesome and are very enthusiastic about the whole thing. Remember that they are very interested in analyzing future trends in the fields of technology and finance, so all this certainly fits the bill.

It's just the FBI/DEA, some congress members and other LEO that are disturbed by the idea of Bitcoin.

They all care about bitcoin to the extent that it can be used to commit crime, funding terrorism, money laundering, drug sales, etc.

9-11 was an inside job if you think those planes evaporated those towers then you have no place to speak on economic issues.

This is what I'm talking about.  ::)

It's funny how the people who say government can't do anything right can simultaneously think it pulled off the greatest conspiracy of all time, killing 3000 of its own citizens, yet not one whistle blower or direct piece of evidence has come forward after a decade, even with all the Wikileaks leaks. Not one person involved in the plot had second thoughts about killing 3000 of their fellow citizens, yet the government leaks info all the time. We found out about Room 641A in San Francisco, CIA rendition sites, and Iran-Contra, but no direct evidence of government involvement in 9-11 has leaked from the government.

Sorry, I find it totally implausible, not to mention that most 9-11 truthers' facts about that catastrophe are either cherry picked to support their point or totally wrong.

We as a society have become naive because we have been brainwashed by our news and leaders. As for Alex Jones, he is a shill he never touches the third rail read about what Bill Cooper said about Jones.

So you get your news from Alex Jones but he's not extreme enough...

That pretty much explains it, since they are all right wing conspiracy theorist whack jobs.

Silk Road discussion / Re: Epic bitcoin crash incoming?
« on: April 13, 2013, 05:49 am »
A crash would go below its average.. This price was the same almost 4 weeks ago.

Exactly. BTC is currently trading at $112, about 20% higher than when op said it would undergo an epic crash.

Like I said in another post, the last price instantly recalibrates people to a "new normal", but think about it in the long term. BTC wasn't worth $112 in the whole 4+ years of its history until literally 10 days ago.

Yeah, it sucks for the people who bought in between April 1 and 10, but that's a tiny window, and a tiny fraction of all bitcoin users.

« on: April 13, 2013, 03:38 am »
Ah, well if you're emailing someone on clearnet, that's a different problem.

A clearnet email provider over Tor should work. Gmail is a pain in the ass, Yahoo Mail doesn't provide SSL support except during login, cyber-rights.net appears to have a self-signed certificate. I still recommend safe-mail.net.

why do we want a big ass blockchain of all our messages encrypted or not?  i know there is a point somewhere in here because you are all very interested but i missed that point.

It isn't a big block chain. It doesn't store all messages forever, only for 2 days.

As long as you start your client once a day, you'll be fine, and it has the advantage of no central point of failure, like Tormail's server.

There's always Bitmessage: http://dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/index.php?topic=125663.msg862881#msg862881

Since it's decentralized, it doesn't rely on one central point of failure, like Tormail's server. The network stores (encrypted) messages for 2 days, so as long as you start your client once a day, you get messages and you don't need to have it running all the time.

@eerva, can you link us to where BTC is at $60? We would definitely like to buy.

LOL, yeah me too. Turn around and sell it on Gox for an instant 90% profit.
