Well, you should be making backups of any wallet, including the ones on your desktop. At least blockchain.info will automatically email it to you whenever a change is made.

This is a good reason to setup automatic backups of your wallet. If you have it, you can import your private keys to Multibit or Bitcoin-QT and access your coins.

SS, I posted the same thing on the previous page. I'm assuming that's not working for her.

Oh, are you using Tails? In that case, forget about the proxy settings, Pidgin should already be configured to use Tor. Just set that to no proxy or whatever the option is.

That's funny I remember reading all those posts in that thread. Forbes is in the forums.

Me too, I'm kinda creeped out though.

It's a reminder that anybody could be reading this forum, so be careful what you say.

Good advice kmf. Another thing is that some bittorrent programs send the user's IP address in their data, even when it is sent over Tor. Not sure exactly how they do that, but you could filter for your own IP address to see if it shows up.

And of course, pick a FOSS torrent for your experiment. :)

Here's some published research on the topic: http://hal.inria.fr/docs/00/47/15/56/PDF/TorBT.pdf

And if you don't trust that link, it's posted on the official Tor blog: https://blog.torproject.org/blog/bittorrent-over-tor-isnt-good-idea

I think you could run wireshark in a VM to show the leakage. One of the problems is the bittorrent client bypassing the proxy settings to connect to the tracker, because that is usually done via UDP while Tor only carries TCP streams.

It's amazing how quickly the comments in any bitcoin thread are obsolete.

The price was in the high sixties and then somebody bought up all the BTC under $70 and put in a buy order for a million dollars worth of BTC at $70.  That's what sparked it off.

Damn.

Whelp, welcome back to insanity land.

i dont think this publicity is good. might make more feds come here

People say this every time a story is posted, as if the feds don't know about us already.

A front page New York Times article, maybe. A Forbes online article, probably not.

Either way, it doesn't matter. Proper use of Tor and bitcoin makes us safe. Relying on the indifference of your adversary is bad security.

Oh sorry TrashBox, I didn't go back to the other page.

The karma doesn't matter to me, it just popped out at me that *everyone* who commented in this thread received -1.

But I agree, the bitter person should join us. :)

i dont trust localbitcoins.com because what if its a fed setting up an account and selling bitcoins locally and ten they follow you to your house and keep you under watch

Yep, could be. Also, your neighborhood CVS / Walmart / Bank of America have cameras. These "anonymous cash drops" are not as anonymous as they appear. There's no perfect solution.

Really, the only reason we don't get busted transferring BTC to SR is because LE doesn't give a fuck about buyers. They probably don't give a fuck about most vendors either, considering they can bust 50 kilos on a swift boat with 3 hours of work. You know how long it would take to do an investigation to find a bitcoin buyer?

It's when you print your private keys, or a QR code representing them, out on paper.

Everyone who posted in this thread has received -1 since I began following it. Somebody either doesn't like lonely people or is bitter that they are alone.

Anyway, I don't know when TrashBox will come back, but if you want quick and simple instructions for getting on the IRC, do this:

Download Pidgin: http://pidgin.im/download/

When it starts up, it will ask you to create an account.

Login Options

Protocol: IRC
username: whatever you want
password: leave blank for now
server: silcroadg3c3mtu6.onion

Proxy tab

Proxy type: Tor/Privacy (Socks5)
Host: 127.0.0.1
Port: 9150

When you're connected, type:  /join #public

You have to be running the browser bundle to connect over Tor.

Also, this is for the latest browser bundle. If you're using a TBB older than about a month, set the port to 9050. They changed it recently.
