Security / Re: Is it safe to use facebook
« on: June 08, 2013, 07:27 am »
You can use Facebook over Tor, but if you create an account over Tor you will probably have to confirm with a text message, so have an anonymously purchased prepaid phone ready. The account will probably get locked a bunch of times and you'll have posting restrictions for the first 30 days, because Facebook will think you are a spammer.

Newbie discussion / Re: Clearnet and tor
« on: June 08, 2013, 04:11 am »
I'm confused on this topic.. what is safe to browse on tor? just sites ending in .onion? is clearnet any other site, and is it not secure to browse them on tor? Forgive my ignorance..

It's a common misconception that hidden services are safer than clearnet. Hidden services provide anonymity for the server. They don't protect your anonymity any better. Tor gives you anonymity on both clearnet and hidden services.

That being said, hidden services can prevent users from screwing up in some cases. For example, if you are connecting to an XMPP server over Tor and you accidentally disable the proxy settings, you will connect directly to a clearnet site and expose your IP address, while it will simply fail to reach a .onion address.

Some of the ones I found in the Red Light District of A'dam do.

It's not gay if you regret it later.

The information is classed as "metadata", or transactional information, rather than communications, and so does not require individual warrants to access. The document also specifies that such "metadata" is not limited to the aforementioned items. A 2005 court ruling judged that cell site location data – the nearest cell tower a phone was connected to – was also transactional data, and so could potentially fall under the scope of the order.

As privacy advocates are fond of saying, metadata in aggregate is content. They wouldn't be collecting it if it didn't reveal useful private information about about people. They are probably looking for patterns that reveal terrorist cells and other high value targets, and not run of the mill drug users or even dealers, but once the data is collected, it never goes away, and it's always a liability.

My phone is rooted and I actually do have that app. But I cant figure it out and theres not alot of Info. I tried to copy the key into a text file then edit it and make it .pgp and it couldnt read it. It didn't even attempt to read it. I think it just said it wasnt a encrypted file

There was a thread about this a few months ago, but I can't find it right now. It seemed to depend on the file extension. Try renaming it to .asc and importing it that way.

Pure Red Eye, I'm not sure exactly, but it's been a problem for some people for as long as I can remember. Windows, Mac and Linux use different codes for line endings, so that may be the source of it.

I recommend pasting your key into a text editor. If it has the blank lines, remove them and save it in a text file. Copy it from there, and if it pastes correctly on the forum, then it should paste correctly wherever else you decide to paste it.

Bridges can be hit or miss. I've grabbed bridge IPs that didn't work, then I grabbed some more and they worked. If they don't work for you the first time, you can try new ones.

Will regular bridges mask your Tor use from your ISP?  Yes, if they are only looking at IPs. If they are using deep packet inspection to examine the stream, then probably no. But if you're in a western country, chances are very high they're not looking at your Tor use in the first place.

You encrypted that with key ID 1C11A8BE.

Mine is 706EE207.

Make sure you select my key when encrypting a message to me.
