Is Whonix hard to instal? It would be great if someone could post a guide.

For the default images that the Whonix people provide, it's extremely easy. Install VirtualBox, start it up, then File -> Import Appliance for each of the images, then click Start to run them.

Tomorrow I am going to publish a tutorial on how to run Whonix with Linux Mint for maximum security and convenience. Stay tuned.

Sanity check: was the browser bundle running? Was the bitcoin-qt client configured to use Socks5 127.0.0.1:9150?

Sorry if that seems stupidly obvious, but sometimes you have to start at the very beginning. I have beat my head against the wall trying to help people only to discover their Tor client wasn't running.

Looks like an alpha client has been released. It's operating on testnet or their own testing network.

You might not be able to recover it, but the CIA could. With the right tools, as said.

I wasn't talking about the CIA. I was talking about that computer store owner. He claims to be able to recover data under any circumstances, but no professional data recovery business claims to be able to do that.

He offered free web hosting. Lots of people took him up on the offer.

I thought this would be enough because I plan on only ever buying under a half ounce of weed, a few LSD tabs or 50 or less ecstasy pills. But then I came across a few threads that talked about GPG and Liberte, and about how they had and OS then an encrypted virtual OS (http://dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/index.php?topic=15383.0) - is this level of precaution necessary?

These are separate issues. One has to do with unlinking bitcoins that you use on SR from your real identity. The other is about the security of your computer. There are different ways to secure your computer, you don't have to use Tails, but you should unlink your bitcoins anyway.

Astor,

do you have any alternatives to tormail that you endorse? I've switched to safe mail and naturally have one account that i only use for certain correspondence and which is always encrypted.

I guess you can use a clearnet email provider but choose a different username, and make sure everyone else uses different usernames. Don't leak who you are talking to, and PGP encrypt all messages.

Yeah, but you contributed to it. I swear, if I was mod, nothing would change except the CP threads would be locked or reassigned to their proper place in Off Topic. At least I had the power to lock one thread down. Don't let this shit ruin one of the best subforums in onionland, mods.

It's almost certainly some random default that doesn't actually work.

I recently had my computer screen replaced and had a conversation about data destruction with the store owner. He made some calls to his lab about how many times too overwrite as to make information retrieval imposable and the response was this"no matter how many times an over write the information is still retrievable with the right tools"

I call bullshit. I have personally tested a single random write and was unable to retrieve any of the previous files. We can put it to a test. I can create a disk image, create a file with a specific message, make 10,000 copies of that file, then overwrite it one time with random data. If that jockey computer store owner can tell me what the file says, he wins.

JS can't deliver malware without the user clicking Run in a dialog

Javascript can be used to deliver malware via browser exploits.

And once again how prescient that was.

In retrospect, this was the first remote execution vulnerability to be used against Tor users, it just wasn't as obvious because the people who got pwned copied the link into a regular browser.

Ironically, I used a disposable Win XP VM to look at and identify the malware in this case without getting pwned.

yeah i cant believe no one said that in the beginning lol.. i saw u post u were thinking about ordering .1 and i just about died laughing.. u could go through a ball (3.5g) in a night if ur really tryin to have a good time lol

Damn man, if it's good coke, you should be able to pull at least 10 hours for each gram. If you can do a ball in a night, you're definitely getting ripped off.

Yes, you should. Antivirus programs are snake oil. Read this thread:

http://dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/index.php?topic=174269.0

The only way to be sure you got rid of the malware is to do a clean reinstall of Windows.
