I am in the process of purchasing BTC from my go-to site, localbitcoins. The cheapest BOA transfer I can find, requires that I give an SMS phone verification, which means giving my real life cell phone number in order to be allowed to purchase the coins. Is this safe to do? I mean, it's not like buying BTC is illegal. The act of giving out my phone number during a process which eventually leads to me purchasing illegal drugs kind of sketches me out though. Any advice?

Search Google voice. It is free. You can get calls/texts on the computer, as well as a cell phone app and even have them forwarded to your home phone. The only number you give out is your Google Voice Number.

Yes you could do what anonymousasshit suggested but my suggestion would be to just go with the second cheapest BofA transfer you could find.

I used a free text/sms service myself.

it says in the faq that you dont have to use sms if you dont want, just bring your computer with you and do verification from your account.

LBC does not require an sms phone (last I checked). I think the OP is dealing with a bitcoin seller that wants his # verified.
A "burner" prepaid phone you only use for LBC might work and allow you to recieve calls when waiting on a deal? I have not tried that.
