Title: Get ready for all U.S shipping times to increase
Post by: northsidepk on February 24, 2012, 03:22 pm
USPS announced several months ago that they would be closing 223 of there 450 processing centers.

Those centers that are to be closed have been determined are being closed in succession

The USPS announced today that they will be permanently laying off 35,000 employees immediately

This is in addition to the 165,000 employees that have been let go over the last 4 years.

The USPS stop offering "overnight" shipping so they can eliminate overnight workers.

In all national U.S. news papers today as well as my local one

Also in www.huffingtonpost.com
           www.bloomberg.com
           www.washingtonpost.com

Guys you gotta read da news man.

U.S. congress has been forcing USPS to set aside billions for future health benefit claims, to the tune of

6 billion so far. Add to that that the USPS has never turned a profit and it not supported by tax dollars.

USPS has been going out of business for about 2-3 years now....its getting bad, there broke.

USPS asked congress to allow them to stop saturday mail and stop setting aside for future health claims and they could stay in business.

Congress is currently evaluating the request.

Usually when people post statistical data they include sources.  Would like to see them  :)

Are you sure? I would be really surprised if they laid off express mail people with the sheer volume of international EMS mail coming through. God know I rely on EMS.

Sure enough to tell you that my local processing center closed, and my mail is now being sorted 150 miles away

Unless congress can pull their head out of their a$$......good luck with that.....

Damage is already done anyhow.....Even if the USPS got the help they needed it would take years to re-hire employees and rebuild the facilities

The only official statement made from the USPS about any increase in shipping time has been about first class.

Officially first class is now 3-5 days instead of 1-3 days

I can tell you from first hand knowledge it is much worse than that.

I have had first class take up to 9 business days

And although normal postage nor priority mail was mentioned, you can assume they will be effected

Not quite correct.  The USPS was turning a nice profit every year, right up until Congress decided to gut them with the Postal Accountability Act. (2006, signed under Bush.)  The PO is being forced to dump $5 Billion *every year* into their benefits accounts to pre-pay the next 75 years.

No other business is forced to do that. None.

That act, and that act alone is what is causing the post's money problems.
It was done deliberately to destroy the USPS.
You can blame the Republicans for every one of those jobs lost.
(Which of course they'll blame on a negro.)

And all they ever had to do, years ago, was halve the payments / double the payout deadline.  But they won't do that.  They're sitting back to watch the USPS die.  Probably some corporate political bribes... got some big money wanting to buy them out and privatize the mail, no doubt.

It's part of the Grover drown-government-in-a-bathtub Norquist ideology that dates back to Reagan at least. Remember Reagan's joke: "I'm from the government and I'm here to help!" Ha ha ha. That was the funniest thing ol' Ronny ever did hear. You should've heard his lines about AIDS. What a cut-up that guy was.

This (destruction of the USPS) is what happens when you elect people to office who think that government (in general) doesn't work. Remember Bush 43 trying to privatize Social Security?

They'll privatize mail delivery if they can get away with it. When "austerity measures" come to the U.S., cutting the USPS may be one of them.

Government functions by putting a gun in the face of one group, taking some of their resources (plus their own cut for "admin"), and redistributing to another group.  The second group is usually much larger than the first and stands to receive a benefit that is much greater on a commensurate level than the loss of the smaller group being mugged.  They are then "legitimized" via elections because the much larger group who gain the benefit have more "say", in terms of voting power, than the smaller group who are being stolen from.  This is not a new game, it's just much more widespread (and therefore set up for much more systemic collapse) than any other time in history.

Government is a gang of thieves writ large. They produce NOTHING, only co-opt existing services or hobble them by making them more expensive (regulations, taxes, fees, licensing, etc).  Municipal trash pickup was not invented by government, but by entrepreneurs seeking profits.  Household plumbing was not invented by governments but by entrepreneurs seeking profits.  Medical care was NEVER invented or even added to by governments, but always by people seeking profits.  I'm not advocating fascism either, so don't try to tell me that the current circle-jerk of corporate cronies and government gun-wielders being "bi-partisan" about leeching from good, productive people is anything CLOSE to free markets and voluntary interactions.

Despite all of his rhetoric, Reagan actually expanded the size and scope more than ANY president prior to him outside of wartime.  You need to research some real history there, friend.  Austerity is bad only when a massive chunk of society comes to be solely dependent on the state to "provide" for them, and even then it's only "bad" in a temporary way.  You don't give the guy who's already drunk off his face another 3 shots of vodka.  You give him some black coffee and sit him down to sober up so he can get on with his life.  Once the resources that have been stolen are re-deployed into private interactions, wealth will skyrocket and upward mobility will once again be possible.

Now, back to the issue of USPS.  This has already had a "hidden" effect and slowed down shipping time in many areas, as I have several friends who work for USPS who have informed me that they have been re-routing things, to try to see what the best possible means of shutdown have been, for the past couple of months.  It will be worse after the shutdowns and layoffs have occurred.

I have 2 online business's (legitimate), we ship First Class USPS and our ship times have gone from 2-3 day's (lower 48) to from 3 days to 3 weeks. Very inconsistent right now.

WOW that's crazy. This could really mess up a vendors rep and also the sellers  because of refunds shown on their account. This would suck because I ship first class mail also. Thanks for the heads up!

The cases where it took close to 3 weeks were a minority.

I would say average has gone from 2-3 days to 3-10 days

as bad as this news is, it may be a good thing. ive been waiting 16 days for a package that came from nl>uk>us, still nothing and shipped first class. so the lack of employees may be the reason? and with the lack of employees, checking packages will be more of a struggle for them?

^The longer the package sits in the mail, the more risky it is.

I started noticing the effects of the shutdowns last week, when something from CA took 3 days to get here (east coast) instead of the usual 2. 3 days isn't bad at all, as long as I know to expect it, which I can't of course because first class mail is unpredictable as fuck :(

USPS closures wont effect seizure rates. Unless your shit is busting open in the mail or something.

Customs isnt cutting jobs as far as I know, thats where seizures mainly occur.
