Title: Bitcoin & Exit Nodes
Post by: yjQ0ESOiM on November 02, 2011, 03:27 am
If I route Bitcoin through Tor, do I need to worry about exit node operators stealing my bitcoins?

No.

No.  You're *infinitely* more likely to lose them to:
1) a username/password phishing site, or
2) some one who gains access to your wallet.dat file.

In other words, the biggest risk to your Bitcoins is what *you* do (or don't do) rather than the technology involved.  Take a few minutes to search the term "phish" on this forum and I think you'll see what I mean.

*Never* trust HiddenWiki to link to the real Silk Road [ ianxz6zefk72ulzz.onion ]; HW is routinely altered several times per day to point to phishing sites.  *Always* use a hard-to-guess password -- preferably different from any others you may have -- to access SR.

yup: my btc are always floating around somewhere online....instawallet is their homes....best kept secret for me, is keepassx  that app has probably saved me more money and panic...is cross platform, and easy to keep the *.kdb file stashed somewhere handy....dropbox, or one of it's friendlier competitors....swissdisk.com...no more losses...and great passwords....

I always use random passwords and usernames given by a random password generating program. I'm the only one who uses this computer, and I encrypt my hard drive using Truecrypt. I found the URL for SR, which you mentioned, by reading the Gawker article on clearnet.

I would keep the wallet.dat file on an encrypted USB. It's more likely to be stolen or used against you if you post it online. LEOs wouldn't need a warrant if you used Drop Box because Drop Box legally owns the files it hosts.
