Title: Site outage
Post by: Dread Pirate Roberts on October 19, 2011, 01:47 am
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

We are terribly sorry for the sudden outage today. We will be back up as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.

UPDATE:
We are having to rebuild the site from a backup. All Bitcoins in user accounts and the escrow are accounted for and all site data has been saved except for roughly the last 30 minutes of activity preceding the outage. Any messages you sent or activity you engaged in during that window will have to be re-done except for deposits and withdrawals. Also, all of the pictures were not backed up, so sellers will need to re-upload them.

There was no security breach or anything to worry about that lead to this situation. We lease server space in different locations around the globe through unaware 3rd parties. We do this to hide the identities of those that run Silk Road in the event of a security breach in one of the servers. Unfortunately, this means we have to deal with some unreliable people who, without revealing too much detail, didn't keep their promises and lead to our servers being shutdown

It is taking so long to get back online because we have to re-download the Bitcoin block-chain through Tor. My hope is that we can get back up by 2 am EST. If we aren't back up by then, I'll recalibrate my estimate and post it here.

Also, the forum is down for completely unrelated reasons and we are working on that too.

Thanks again for your understanding.

UPDATE:  2am EST has come and gone.  I'm still running test to make sure everything is working as it should on the new forum.  I forgot how complicated this site is!  My new estimate is 4am EST.

...and we're back!  I'll be checking messages for the next hour or so, so if anything is amiss with the restored site please message me asap.  Thanks for hanging in there.  We'll keep doing our best to make sure this kind of thing never happens again.

UPDATE:  Looks like I spoke too soon.  The site is down once more, most likely due to an overload of traffic from everyone getting back on the site and sellers uploading their pics all at once.  I will update you here as soon as I know more.

UPDATE:  I just opened the site back up.  Here's a reprint of the announcement:

We have been experiencing technical difficulties over the past couple of days. This is nothing to be overly concerned about. We will be back to normal soon. We are opening the site back up again but this time with image uploading disabled. Hopefully our backup server can handle the traffic this time, but if it goes down again, we will stay down until we can get a more powerful server online. Click here for more details.

IMPORTANT: Please do not use past addresses for future deposits. Only use the bold address on your account page. We have not gotten to the bottom of it yet, but it is possible that we lost some of the old addresses during the switch to the backup server.

One other thing, we are not auto-finalizing orders or moderating past-due resolutions for at least a couple of days so everyone can catch up from not having access to the site. Thanks again for everyone's patience through all of this. We've received far more encouragement than complaints these past couple of days, so thank you for standing behind the site :)

UPDATE: Ok, looks like we're down again.  I was pretty hopeful it would work that time, oh well.  We've been working on a full capacity backup all along anyway, so we should have that up soon, possibly within 12 hours though I'll post something more concrete when I know.  Hang in there gang, there's a light at the end of the tunnel.  Also, for everyone concerned about missing bitcoin deposits, do not worry.  We will get it sorted out and your account will be credited one way or another.  Sorry for the stress :)

UPDATE 1AM UTC:  Nothing much else to add to the update.  Just want to reassure everyone that we are doing everything in our power to get the site back up.  We are pursuing two separate paths in parallel and whichever is finished first is when we'll be back up.  Hard to say when that will be, I'll update as soon as I know more.

UPDATE 8AM UTC 10/21/2011:  The light at the end of the tunnel is getting bigger!  We have a full capacity server online and are in the process of configuring it.  Two other independent, full capacity servers are in the pipeline to serve as backups, so if we ever have an unexpected outage again we won't be scrambling to find a server that can handle the traffic.  I am so incredibly sorry this happened.  Thank you for hanging in there and being so understanding :)

UPDATE 1:00PM UTC 10/21/2011:  We are sooooo close to going live again.  And I am sooooo exhausted :)  We're still doing the final tests and configurations, but I'm going to want to get a little sleep before we go live, so once we are ready to go, I am going to get a few hours of sleep, then wake up and launch so I will have the energy to oversee how it's going and respond to everyone's messages that I'm sure will come flooding in.  See you soon :)

UPDATE 9:18PM UTC 10/21/2011:  Got some rest.  We are working out some bugs in the new setup, gotta be thorough.  We should be able to go live sometime in the next 12 hours.

UPDATE 1:18AM UTC 10/22/2011:  What an ordeal!  The site just went live.  The new server is more powerful and secure than the one we were on before the outage and is leased through a much more professional proxy, so I have high hopes that it will last us a long time.  We've amped up our backup plans none the less and will have multiple independent full-capacity servers waiting in the wings at all times.  I don't want to speak too soon, though.  This is a new system and if something goes wrong, we may have to take the site down again, but like I said things are looking much better now.  Again, I am honored by everyone's support and patience this week.  I love you all :D

UPDATE 4:00AM UTC 10/22/2011:  You may have noticed the site being down for a minute or two every 15 min or so over the past couple of hours.  We figured out the problem was our system running into an arbitrary limit in the configuration.  We increased the limit and should be running more smoothly now.

I just tryed to log in today and compete some orders but the whole website is down. Also, is this the true forum?

I think we really need this problem cleared up.

Being a network admin myself, I can appreciate the heat that the admins are under at the moment.
I do agree that we need to get this cleared up but...
I am willing to bet that they already know that it needs to get cleared up.
Give 'em some space...
Stop tapping your foot...
Go outside and play for a while...

From what I've read anonymous or someone posing as him used dos attacks on several onion sites for whatever reason.  Not sure if true or not.

Why were the forums down?  Have they been down since the 14th?  It looks like there's barely been any activity since then.

I second that on the Bitcoin price drop!  We need a anonymous currency that doesn't screw people over trying to do standard barter deals (Who here is trying to buy Bitcoins as an investment?).  "If I take a dollar to the store to use to buy some bananas, I don't want my dollar to be worth 50 cents by the time I get to market"  THAT'S BULLS**T!

It's not that the forum was rolled back - over the last few days the other forum, version 2.0, was active, now 2.0.1 is active. Since 2.0.1 wasn't active for the last few days no posts have been placed on it. All posts from the last few days are on the other forum. RI, if you changed your password in the last few days you only changed it on the other forum not on this one. If anyone created a user on the forums before the databases diverged your user will be on both. If you created it afterwards it will only be on one or the other. Same goes for posts. This is what all the evidence shows.

Why are there are two forums that alternate? 42.

Hopefully, as members, we try not to spread misinformation, panic, paranoia and rumor.  A year from now we'll be laughing about this, when btc go back up and stabilize, and western governments finally thro in the towel on drug prohibition, the same way they finally did on alcohol prohibition.  "Remember the october panic  last year?!"  we'll be saying....maybe...

I suggest to others that they do what I did yesterday, which is create a new account, maybe with a new username, so if there are continued password problems, they can still log in.  I"m also going to take SR at their word, on the site being worked on, rather than giving in to the paranoid rats that sometimes infest my brain, and keep shouting 'interpol' 'dea' 'mafia' hahahaha...this'll pass too.

I got into my account yesterday on main forums, and it was about the same: H shippers still hadn't shipped, but had great msgs explaining why, so that's always fun, good for an idle moment or two, but nothing different except btc had dropped some more....

Same here... nothing worse than an unexpected server crash... except for the impatient end users hounding you, asking "is it up yet?"  like you're just sitting there having ice cream and watching TV.  It'll be up when it's up and if it goes down then, then it'll be up when it's up.

Good luck!

^ Word! People take webservers etc for granted until they go down. No one appreciates the server admins that make the world go round. Many times people only see an admin's work when there is a problem. I know how it is SR and while I hope it is up sooner rather than later, I know that these things take time to be sorted out correctly. As my father always told me, 'do it right, do it once...' Keep up the good work!

Totally agree. As a member of the IT community myself, I understand the position they're in. Constantly having bitchy users asking "what kind of time frame are we looking at?" "Why is this happening?".  Take your time guys, do it right. I'm more concerned with security than speed, so get it done right.

you can never know, just like IRL. but like IRL, you can make sure who you talk to is who he say he is using GPG. regardless you should encrypt everything . addresses should always be encrypted. i don't think it's possible LE would take over SR and let it keep operating
the biggest concern should be BTC and traceability imho

Not to be completely paranoid or anything...  but what is the best measure when / if silk road goes back up to ensure
it is silk road and not some LE takeover of silk road to data capture?
you can never know, just like IRL. but like IRL, you can make sure who you talk to is who he say he is using GPG. regardless you should encrypt everything . addresses should always be encrypted. i don't think it's possible LE would take over SR and let it keep operating
the biggest concern should be BTC and traceability imho

If LE took over silk road and kept it operating would that be considered entrapment (on certain items obviously not on books and testing kits)

agreed, gpg where necessary. also to run the sr server they would need access to the private key for the hidden service from which the tor address is hashed.

forgive the tech ignorance, and i am not trying to spread FUD.  but lets logic through. is it possible for some one to create a new hidden service and hijack the old address to use for phishing (if so i doubt le is really that sophisticated).  Is the .onion address the hash of a privkey that is needed to publish?  so w/o that privkey it would be impossible (infeasible) to some how hijack.  tor runs on what sha1?

Yes, something like this, it's impossible to use SR address without private key required for hidden service.
For get into details you can read about hidden services on Tor site or google it

I don't normally advocate communications outside of SR, but since SR has been down for a couple of days and has not been able to stably return to operation on its published timetable, please feel free to contact me at:
  tetravort@hushmail.com   or   tetravort@safe-mail.net

I don't really trust either of those email services, so use GPG if you are able.

I will, of course, return to normal SR-based operations when SR returns to normal SR operations.  I know you're having a shitty time, SR, and you'll hear lots of complaining, but rest assured your work is greatly appreciated.  I understand that it makes sense to prioritize your privacy and security (and therefore SR's longevity) over uptime.

But aside from that keep up the good work.

The two best ways to be sure that the site hasn't been secretly taken over by law enforcement or some hacker is the .onion urls, and the official Silk Road public key.  The .onion urls correspond to private keys that must be present on the server running Silk Road in order for it to be validated.  Without these keys, no one can impersonate dkn255hz262ypmii.onion or ianxz6zefk72ulzz.onion.  But, if the servers were compromised, someone could take these keys and impersonate the sites.

That's why I always GPG sign my important messages, so you know it is me.  My personal private key could also be stolen if I were ever physically compromised or my personal computer were hacked, but it is another layer of validation.

Will there be some measurements taken for this not to happen anymore in the future? Or at least not that often?
Since i am a member the website is laggy as hell!

Besides trying to find ever more reliable proxies, we are also going to have at least one full capacity backup server idling at all times from now on.

SR while you are here, hows everything going in general? how do you feel your experiment is going?

Couldn't be happier :D  This is the most fun I've had in my adult life!  We'll get through this speed-bump and be better for it.

I was able to log on late last night and everything with my account looked perfect! I feared that the site would go down again due to sheer volume of traffic, which is probably what is happening now. Great job SR and nice to see some PGP signed communication about the state of the forums and the site.

Keep up the good work SR and lets all keep our fingers crossed for a good outcome.

P.S.
Not to spread FUD or be distrustful, but I never had and occasion to import SR's official public key, so I can't check his sig. I'm sure I was not the first to think of this and I'm sure multiple people have confirmed that the signed messages are coming from the man himself. If this is not the way it works than please forgive my ignorance.

Thanks and I wish I could say I'm praying for you SR, but I am an atheist and that would be hypocritical. Anyhow, best of luck, no matter how this turns out.

I'm missing 42 bitcoins, myself. Hoping that this is just a result of the outage, but it looks like somebody withdrew them. Anyone else have this problem too?

traversis.
i know what happened to your bitcoin, because you have logged into my phishing site about 15 times over the last few days. too bad when I logged into your account, your BTC was already gone, so you have probably logged in to every phishing site ever listed on hidden wiki. I gotta say, with that amount of ignorance, you deserve to lose your money!

yeah, you guys - make sure ** especially when logging in ** that you're at http://ianxz6zefk72ulzz.onion when you visit SR (this is also true for URLs for non-onion sites on the normal 'net). personally, I always log in from my bookmarked SR URL since onion URLs are kinda hard to remember :oP If that's not the URL when you log in, you're being phished and handing your login info to a (malicious) stranger.

EDIT: also, if you're already logged in and you follow (or copy-paste) some link and you get another login screen be especially wary. happens _all_ the time on Facebook, for example.

hey everyone,
i think we all need to give SR some credit and some time to rebuild as i dont think half of you realize how hard it is to rebuild a site like SR from a back up, and the fact
he has managed to keep a back up for up to half before the crash is incredable and all we have to do is give him some time and reload our photos

SR i have total faith in you take your time as i know the work load you must have, and thank god escrow and bitcoins were on the back up or that would have been a
nightmare,

im just sorry who ever let you down on the server side of things didnt keep there word, im sure if we all pull together as a community this can be solved and prevented
from happening in the future, some one out there must have free space on a reliable sever to rent to SR.

Once again thanks for you deadication to SR and we are willing to wait just take your time as i know from experiance how hard building a normal sight is let alone a
.onion site

Thanks SR for all your hard work :)

Always when I signup somewhere or deposit money a total meltdown happens... I signed up as seller on Silkroad. But what worries more is the bitcointrade, with selling 20 cents you can manipulate it´s course with 20 points. Can I accept other form of payment, with bitcoin  we are losing money. I could for instance take paysafecard as payment, but it´s hard to escrow it. I can be wrong, -that almost never happens- bitcoin will have 0,00 value within a few days,

If im not mistaken much like mybitcoin when it goes down if a transaction takes place during the outages I know mbc has no way of actually "seeing" that transfer from say from a pool to mbc i would presume it would be the same for mtgox to SR I wouldn't worrie to much about it thou those guys that are missing there btc hey I COMPLETELY understand how frustrating this is right now I get that but relax guys as much of a inconvenience it is your a unfortunate victim of circumstance and at this time I assume silkroads priority is to resume normal operations first as many of you don't know what it takes to actually maintain a site like this it is incredible it is back up this quickly and of course when dealing with peoples money frustrating as fuck because I'm sure his inbox is fucking maxed right now

there is a reason why i never keep a balance of more then 50btc on SR and it is because of things like this im sure each case will be evaluated and dealt with but it will take a shit ton of time just to get things settled down :)

On a side note SR admin I have a bunch of space on a unmetered fractional OC3 connection located at terra-byte being that my mate is staff security is not a issue I could possibly offer you a jail if you need if so message me on SR itself

Yes, was back up  for a while then went down again around an hour or so ago. My guess it that SR took it down to investigate the missing transfers and have the site's bitcoind or whatever rescan the block chain, so be prepared for it to be down again for at least a few more hours. Just my guess though. Might just be overloaded from everybody trying to log in at once.

i find it truly amazing that after the MtGox hack and the Mybitcoin hacks that people keep large quantities of coin on SR.  Is it so hard to only keep what is absolutely necessary held in your own personal local wallet?  Buyers should only put coins on SR when they are just about to buy something and vendors should take their coins out as soon as possible after they release from escrow.  SR has been very stable for a long run and I can understand people becoming comfortable thinking that nothing will ever go wrong, but that is just not how things work.

I don't think hopelessness is necessary, at least not yet. Have some patience. Whoever those amazing souls who run this place might be, they seem confident they'll get this fixed. Just give them some time before predicting an inevitable death of the Silk Road.

Just a ignorant 2cents from the bleachers:

I know that running a secure, multi-homed site with a tolerance for high latency (TOR) can be a challenge. FWIW, we traced a lot of application / database instabilities to ....tadum....MySQL. Taking the effort to change over to Postgres really, really made a difference.

Hey SR staff! Same mrnye that's been around here for the past few weeks, just had to register new account to post cuz mine won't let me in. Keep up the good work. I have faith you'll get this all sorted out. As to this being coincidence or and attack I found this posted on Pastebin:

This is concerning the official SR message:

"So the server went down unexpectedly today. This was very unnerving because we thought it had somehow been seized or something terrible like that. Fortunately it was just some kind of glitch and we were able to reboot. Everything has been backed up and is totally current, but we are not going to turn the site back on for a couple of days while we work out a way to prevent such problems. We are terribly sorry for this inconvenience, but we want to provide the best service possible, and random outages just aren't going to cut it. We know it must be terribly frustrating, but we are taking the better-safe-than-sorry approach and we hope you understand."

We Anonymous, were testing our new WebLOIC on several sites including The Silk Road and The Underground Wiki.  This is not the hoax #refref.

We apologize for the inconvenience of it may have caused to SR users.  Take this as a warning to those who host CP on darknets.  We will take you down.  We have the means.

Who knows if its for real. If it is then at least we can agree that SR was downed for a good cause, right? Fuck pedos. I hope this hasn't already been brought up but I can't really read all 10 pages of this thread b/c some pages won't load. I kinda want to believe the above quote, at least that would suggest that LE still can't figure out how to stop us, and the only people that could are to anarchist to care about people dealing drugs, but not so anarchist to not care about people diddling little kids.

I don't know if it's real or not. I'm not entirely sure how one would go about DDoSing .onion sites, or if it's even possible. If it is, wouldn't it take a lot of people and it would be incredibly slow? Whether it's true or not, I'm sure whatever this is will get fixed. If it is true, at least they're moving on to targets more worthy of their time. Nobody will miss a few pedos.

Look the SRM got flooded last night because every member if silk road hopped on asap....this in returned caused a traffic jam and a blow out Site.

Next time it comes back on only pertain to orders and gtfo the server or it will crash again.
No reason to shop when the server won't hold all you members at once.
Over the rest of the week the members on at any given time should equal back out to a running running site.

How were they debunked? I'm sorry but some pages for me just will not load on the forums. And I have no doubt that SR will be fixed, and patiently await that answered prayer, I just wouldn't rule out Anonymous, even if it seems like it wasn't them, it still might have been, they do this kind of thing constantly and I think Tor would be a small hurdle for them to jump over. Just my opinion. And like I said, I just would like to believe its true, if that's okay with you? Even if it isn't, it just makes me feel better about not having access to my new favorite place on the interwebs believing that it is an effort to stop those out there glorifying the destruction of innocence.

Regardless of who/what caused the crash I know that the powers that oversee this place will get it back in working order soon enough. They are all geniuses that deserve nobel peace prizes.

yeah I think I caught the second crash first hand. I just randomly decided to try and load SR and got the login screen, no captcha and then when I refreshed connection timed out ::)

I still wouldn't rule out hackers though, there really is an "Anonymous" despite the fact that there are a million wanna-be's that claim to be him/her/it. Besides, like I said, wouldn't it be nice if we were all going through this stress and the result is the crashing of a bunch of CP servers?

From the sounds of it you should be ok.  Sounds like those who were transferring coins from/to SR at the time of the crash have the problems.

The site was running fine for a good long while so coins are put to good use.  It's not always as easy to resolve these things by just buying another server.  You do realize that acquiring and/or provisioning new server is not the fastest thing to do in the first place let alone configured as SR is in an anonymous fashion.

QFT, if you buy/rent server space, at least IME, it's just like buying/renting a car or home. There are forms, contracts, etc. that have to be filled out and honestly I have no idea how SR have gotten away with being SR for so long. I wouldn't know the first thing about finding new server space anonymously and neither would you(generalm3sS) I'm guessing. I'm sure its not so much a money problem as it is a finding the right people to host the site problem. Like it says in the OP, they have to go to some less-than-reputable sources, which was the cause of the crash(according to SR, i still choose to believe anon are out there killing pedos on the streets ;D)

I am happy none of this happened when I was handing out all the samples. I actually am also glad it was up long enough on Tuesday to grab the one order I had and ship it out :P

As for the Black market website, I know its like loyalties being divided for some people, but its just another place for people to branch out to. SR took my money for a sellers account here, so I don't feel massive loyalties to just having my stock up for sale with just them. In fact I was on other sites before SR. It may have been a bit tacky though to through the link here at the moment though.

I am sure SR will be back up and running in no time and I agree with other posters that I would prefer for them to take their time. If they are going to do it, they will want to make sure they do it right. I have no idea the logistics required to running a site like this and I am grateful its even up. Ty SR and hope you work out the kinks.

Jesus H - settle the fuck down everybody. I know some of you are probably tweaking about funds just chill - there is no reason to believe that SR will not make things right. Additionally, systems such as this are by nature some what risky - you should keep that in mind when you make financial decisions. Also a big fuck you to the blackmarket asshat - making an account to make one post, advertising your site on a thread which is about the operational status of another site is greasier than a greek bathhouse attendants arsed sphincter. If individual vendors want to provide their customers with a different place to reach them fine - but to pimp your site like you did is most shameful. Give SR admin some more time - huff some paint if you need to - just relax and remember, the more time he spends writing updates to reassure us that he is working on it the less time he spends fixing the problem.

It's just that no sellers have ratings, no buyers have ratings, there's almost no selection, so pretty much every transaction is going to be a reach. And I don't want to reach in a new environment where no one has any real skin in the game.

I know it must be a bitch to host a site like SR, but I was really counting on a couple of the transactions going thru before the weekend to travort (sic) and to vivi15 - I hope they make it - It was a lot of money to a poor guy like myself!

Thanks SR for all you do - I know it's tough!

On Black Market: I went there when they first got rolling, last time SR was down, and I have to say I got ripped off twice.  Wasn't major, best I can remember, but they didn't have escrow, and the scammers were using names from SR, and selling similar product.  I went from there over to OLDB, and found what I was looking for.

I did find the owner of BM over on the bitcoin forums, and he was friendly and honest about it.  Made me appreciate escrow a whole lot, when SR finally came back up..and I think since then, BM has gotten escrow in.

Wait, I'm confused.. so there is no new SR at a new url, right? that was just a scam, right?
I'm kinda fucked up and just trying to clear things up.. I need to finalize a couple orders that arrived but I can't because the site is down.

I had a thought earlier, to avoid something like what happened with the second crash due to so many users sitting there ctrl+f5'ing every five minutes til they saw it up, then flooding the server right as it got back up and running.

So, the idea goes a little like this, SR starts up but doesn't tell ANYONE but sellers. That way all the sellers can get on, the server won't be overrun, and they can get their pics and listings back up, check their messages etc. Then, the sellers can message SR and let them know who has pending transactions. Then all the sellers can log off, the buyers who still need to finalize orders and such can then be told that the sights up and they get on finalize, etc. Then tell those with BTC stuck on SR so they can place orders, rinse, wash repeat.

All the while they can still be on the lookout for more server space to accommodate the large number of members, and work out the kinks and bugs that may be left in the backup of the site. After its all up and running with all the server space required, and everything working, THEN make a "public" announcement, and hope that the server doesn't flood.

Of course this is a moot point if its more than just a server space problem, but I thought it was a good idea, I've take 2 clonapins tho, so it may be an awful idea.

Amazing what F5 can do. The only thing I find a bit problematic, is getting people on accordingly. Sounds like a great idea; limiting the log on procedure to sellers only, and then the buyers. Hopefully there isn't any outstanding transactions that can't be fixed. And with the server space, and function, finding an offshore server is imo, difficult and scary. As you may not have total control on it.

Yeah, I agree. Basically we'd need a new thread where all of us who had to star new accounts on the forums, and who have pending/in transit transaction, post their SR usernames(if you can get on your original account here then your one of the lucky few) so that SR would know who to contact after the sellers get everything back to normal. And if we could be patient and keep cycling our allotted time, and get on only long enough to do what we need and get off, then report to SR when we get off we could still use SR and give the admins the time they need to find server space without having to resort to risky offshore servers. IDK, just my 0.02BTC ;)

I do not know what I will do with my BTC as well. I just finished transferring from my BA to ####, and now I am thinking twice before I send anything, or use SR during this week. Who knows how many times it will come up and go down.

Besides, maybe the market will pick up again. I do not understand the BTC economy, but I wish it went back to the 1BTC = $11. That would just make me freaking rich, lol.

I did a little test on the morale here. New guy 0/0% comes to me saying he wants 10g weed for $100, but only has $90 in BTC because it fell so quickly. I don't know about everybody else but this outage has made me realize how much I was taking SR for granted. I thought nothing of loggin on, window shopping and then making a transaction at some stage.

I know mail sourcing has its vulnerabilities but it sure as hell beats having to deal with some of the people I used to have to and waiting around in dark alleys to score or waiting for no one to turn up at all.

Get some sleep, take more than only a couple hours if you have to, take 10hrs or more if you have to.  The more you rest, the better shape you will be in to deal with anything that comes up.  I would like to thank you in advance for the fantastic job you have done repairing the site and dealing with updating everyone.

Any status reports SR ? I appreciate your work but curious as to what stage of progress your In you keep saying your hammering out the issues working on stuff making sure it was bug free makes me wonder if there is a bigger problem ?

perhaps I'm just wigging like the rest but i mean and i don't know the details of the site but if im not mistaken pretty much most of SR is just sql data *most of* if it just needs to be restored whats the issue  since pictures are already gone it must honestly just be php and sql data and since there is just a master wallet or wallets and all the site does is move a transparent number around from one user to another till they want to withdraw ...

im just confused at what the issue is i do appreciate you giving us more feedback then the mtgox staff did when they had there issue but it would be nice to have a bit more period updates :)

cheers and hope your back online again shortly

SR, thanks for all the hard work.  I know how much effort it takes to keep a website like this alive.  Idk what kind of tools or your level of administration sophistication you are using to keep things going in the backend, so I hope I am not preaching to the choir, but if you don't already do it, I think mysql replication over an SSH connection over tor would be pretty awesome and not hard to set up (I assume you are using mysql).  Keep a binary log on each slave that logs slave updates, use automysqlbackup nightly (stop and start the slave when you do that) and you will always have up to the second backups even if an evil person starts destroying data or takes the master server offline.  Just my two cents.  Keep up the excellent work!

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

The signed message in the original post IS NOT VALID. This could mean it's an imposter posing as SR.

However, I notice that there is an "update" in the middle of the message. It could be that SR edited the message quickly without paying attention to what he was doing. This would also make the signature invalid.

I apologize if this has already been mentioned, but I am not going to read through an 18 page thread to get out this important information. SR needs to fix the problem in the original post.

If this post disappears, it pretty much rules out any innocent explanation. If the situation is resolved to my satisfaction, I will replace this post with another one signed with my key.

This is my public key:

I went through all signed posts by SR. All were valid with the exception of 2 or 3. So it's not unprecedented for it to happen. It probably is just edits after the fact. Nonetheless, it'd be nice to have it verified since its the thing we count on.

I have a copy of the first message that I saw that SilkRoad posted and it already had the "UPDATE:" section in it, and it, too, does not check out with the signature. It could very well be I did not see the original original post, however. I have a feeling everything is fine, but would be nice to get one last signed confirmation from you, SilkRoad :)

I think everyone will have to be patient while the site admins thread through the bock chains and put people's deposits where they belong, and make any shopping cart transactions that got stuck in the midst of an DB transaction. They can do it. Mighrt take a day or two.

I think some of the flakiness is not the site going down.....its related to whatever the TOR equivalent of DNS is......some pages are not available, then they are, but I can send messages and browse, etc. I might hit a page that says, NO RESPONE, and then reload and it works - just like a DNS propagation problem on the clear web. Things are getting better, yahhhhh.......CRASH! No, UP, down....:(, I will login Tomorrow. My vendors, I love you all! Post by: Cgault on October 22, 2011, 04:01 am
I realize that buyers and sellers have different agendas, but I, for one, am going to log out of SR and come back tomorrow some time, and let the DB breathe. Maybe if a few hundred buyers just lay off fro while, if nothing is urgent, it might make the database tuning and other tech shit easier for the admins  and engineers while they tune the local network, firewall, TOR proxy settings, and database settings. I realize that some here have some uncommitted BTC transactions, but you must realize that Bitcoin was designed to allow for transaction recovery - its just takes time.

Give the SR admins time to get the transactions sorted out.

Would take around an hour or so, in your bitcoin wallet you should see the transactions and the number of "confirmations", you need 6 confirmations I think for the transaction to clear. Just wait it out. To transfer funds to SR just go to your account and send the bitcoins to the address in your profile. You'll have to wait another hour or so for this. Hope this helps

One last thing that is a bit confusing to me. At the bottom of my bitcoin wallet it says 8 connections and 132,912 blocks. Is this something I need to be concerned with or is that normal?

You wont see any of your transactions on your bitcoin wallet because you have not got all the blocks downloaded yet, Currently there is 150,200 blocks, So you wont even see your coins until that certain block with your transfers on it is downloaded.

Hope that helps you :)

Be patient, there is a flood of exchanging going on right now and it takes time for the block chain to catch up. Your coin will get there when it's turn comes up.
This isn't those ripoff artist's "Bunk America". On a second note, the speed of this site and SR is great. The servers should have crashed a month ago. LMFAO

Alright so, on a serious note:

On Wednesday night, I sent exactly 100 btc to SilkRoad right before the big crash.
Today, I am up on S.R. but my btc are not there.
Can somebody in the know tell me if I can ever expect to see those?
Are other people experiencing this at this point?
I'm weirdly not pissed about this yet. That's kinda why I'm asking, just confused and trying to figure out my strategy...

Thanks!

I sent 100 BTC to SR last night and they haven't shown up yet. It sounds like a lot of people are having this problem. Does anyone know if they will ever arrive? I would be quite upset about losing all this money, especially since it belonged to a friend of mine who was going to make a purchase - it is going to be hard to explain that my friend's $300 just disappeared.

Title: Re: Site outage
Post by: Cgault on October 22, 2011, 06:18 pm
"I dont wanna know nuthin except when my BTC are gonna show up!!!!

I get it, I do, we all do. This is a new type of exchange medium, the Bitcoin, and was designed so that a central authority is not needed to clear transactions. It's a peer to peer technology that uses a stream of transaction blocks that can be inspected (by people and the wallet software) so that transactions that are not acknowledged can be completed.  It would not hurt, if you are going to be using bitcoins, to watch the bitcoin.org video or read up a little on the transfer mechanism.

It takes a finite amount of time to do a regular transfer when both the sending and receiving systems are operational, and it may take longer when a systems is down, and a little longer still for stalled transactions to be fixed by a system that keeps the wallet for you, such as SR.

Bitcoins are designed not go missing, technically. SR just came off of a serious outage, so give them a message and some reasonable time to get the transactions sorted. Trust in the block chain.

Man, I'm working from memory, but I've had real 'slowdown' problems, and it seems to be depending on what computer I"m on...little netbook seems to stall, while if I put it on other computer, is speedier...still can easily take 24 hrs getting wallet full.  The other ways I've done, if I just get tired of seeing it stuck at 130000 or something like that, is to just download and install all the blocks, on a flash drive, then transfer them over and run them with the wallet.dat.  I know how to do it, just not to explain it real good, especially if you get stalled, you can take your address, and go to block.explorer.com, see if it's already there, and what block it was at.  Here: here's the forum I got help, and one of the threads I followed:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=printpage;topic=47297.0

I'm too tired to explain it rite now, I'll see if somebody else has helped, or go back over what I did...don't get discouraged, I've waited a couple of days on a stuck wallet, and as long as you have your wallet.dat, you won't lose your money...

Since the first outage its been around 1 week with no access.
I spent many hours to try to get access again but i get whether the message "we are terribly sorry..." or the loginpage displayed. After filling out the correct login on the correct URL I am always pushed back to a new captcha.
Even trying to make a new account on the form is being back pushed to a cleared form and capture.

So SILK ROAD please have a look into my profile "SILDENAFIL" and bring me back online!
I already sent my answering Email-adress to the SR-Admin...

I am using the newest TOR-Software 7.01
Do you thing that this might be a problem??

PLEASE ANSWER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE - IF POSSIBLE PLEASE VIA EMAIL

Even trying to make a new account on the form is being back pushed to a cleared form and capture.

So SILK ROAD please have a look into my profile "SILDENAFIL" and bring me back online!
I already sent my answering Email-adress to the SR-Admin...

I am using the newest TOR-Software 7.01
Do you thing that this might be a problem??

PLEASE ANSWER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE - IF POSSIBLE PLEASE VIA EMAIL
It took me 3 or 4 tries on the captcha to log in just now, and i know i typed it correct each and every time. Maybe try a few more times while waiting for Admin help, restart Tor a time or two and hope for a better connection?

Yep, it's all working for me...and it might be overkill, but I think it's good to have a backup username here and on main site, stashed w/password, so if things get weird, and you can't get in regular accnt, u can try the other...

when will the cancel button work again? I have an order that I could have/should have canceled before the crash. Now the link is back, but when I click it, it says it is disabled

My BTC transfers to SR yesterday never showed up, but my transfers from today with a newer SR addy did, so it is obviously not just a blockchain download issue, FWIW. Still, I know Silk Road will get to my message detailing the missing transaction and credit my account. I'll just have to wait a bit more before I get my drugs :P

I'm logged into the site as I type this, so yea, maybe high traffic, etc. earlier when you were trying to get in.
BTW it's nice to see the main page of SR with all of it's items having pictures again.
